I think I want to record via hardware eventually but its a bit hard to do that when I have little to no hardware. I might get the deck first and record out the interface through it and then add a mixer and go hardcore later
I'm getting a preamp with turntable soon, should be ok though I know nothing about impedance
i do all of my stuff with cassette tape but the thing about cassette tape is that you can get really great recording quality from it as long as you know what you are doing
that said here are two demos i recorded on my cassette recorder a long time ago (that cassette recorder died recently rip):

Nice. These sound pretty good indeed.
I only really have these extremely noisey cassettes that have had years of stuff recorded to it. I also need to find a Jack to DIN cable, or modify my cassette deck, since the LINE input is a DIN connection. Right now I'm recording stuff through the MIC input, which is kinda sensitive..
if you want to sample a record from vinyl you need to have a preamp first because the record player wont have the same impedance as your interface
Only if your record player pre-dates something like the mid 90's though. Record players made these day pretty much all output LINE signal.
Personally I hooked up my dads old record player to my interface using a 20 euro phono preamp.

really? thats kind of gross i wouldnt trust a turntables built in preamp compared to a good solid unit

i spend so much of my time deconstructing stereolab omg; i figured out not only all the chords that tim gane used on ETK and dots and loops but i also spent time making sure i had exactly the right inversion and voicing of the chord.

goddammit I wish I had the dedication I'd go through the whole of Margerine Eclipse
I'm going to have to start soon
It's hard to analyse these things really - I'm doing a music course at uni and am finding it hard to apply to pop music because its all classical stuff
stereolabs interesting sometimes because they tend to float with their scales, being really ambiguous with their tonic and stuff, so you just need to kind of learn what he looks for in chord progressions and try to figure it out that way
heres a margarine eclipse one i know

Yeah, I know cosmic country noir - one of my favourites
Although yours is a bit different so I might amend mine, thanks heaps for that
I have noticed they tend to modulate back and forth a lot so I'll have a look around
I need to try that tape thing, nice.
and freakrules, I can't be a judge of mixing/mastering my setup sucks right now, but from what I heard, liked the compositions, nice percussion on the last one.

pretty interesting but if there was supposed to be a beat then i couldnt follow it
very chill though, im enjoying those ambient synths.
I made this remix, first half serious thing I've ever done with lmms. I call it "Obama: The king of stapler"

guess the song it's based on and win nothing.
Found an old recording, but quality is kind of lacking. It's still neat though.

wow nice, I'm not usually into metal/hard stuff, but that was pleasantly surprising, loved the bit right before the drums get intense, but the percussion is also interesting, nice structure and chords. cool.
Can't judge how the mix is or anything, using laptop speakers.

That is pretty wicked sounding, the mixing is almost perfect.
Your guitar style is very close to mine, except i like to wack off on it more so i can wanger twang some blues riffs.
I think that your last little part was not energetic enough, I'd say spice your riff with some triplets and transitions (Solo transitions)
That and if you add a solo to the song, it will be ten times more badass. I love the riff you started with though, it is very in between Metal and Rock id say.
With that said, I have something to share.
In this song i focused on panning, complex melody and rhythm, and always changing music.
In the drop you will notice that the knocks pan from left to right to right to left when they sequence, and the layered instrument does the opposite allowing more middle space and keeping the sound spacious.

sorry the link isn't in an easy format. The fucking website wont let me use /media for some reason.
Tell me what i need to fix if anyone can notice (Im still working on my mixing skills)
Thanks and enjoy

Just to scare the shit out of people, I made a vocal ambient song for the title track of the album I'm working on
scratch that, found major flaws and problems within the song. Redoing it.

I posted an earlier version of this song in here but I forgot to post the updated one! It's been done for a while now and I'm pretty proud of it. Hopefully I can get some good feedback from you guys as I'm always looking to improve
Here is another piece of music I'm currently working on for the Portal Mod that Lamarr is making, its really a rough outline right now, but its taking shape.

Great job on this, it sounds awesome! One thing though, I think you should maybe go a bit easy on the chopped vocals during the main part since it kind of covers up the synths, which IMO should get some breathing room. Just my opinion though, can't wait to hear the finished product. :)
Edit:
Here's something I've been working on myself. It's been a while, haha.

First song ever, Liquid DnB. Not even close to done. First, these are just throwaway drums. Second, this really needs mixing (quiet piano makes the song seem much more repetitive than it is) and mastering.
Not sure if I should add or remove or change any instrument though. FYI it's made in FL Studio, and everything but the drums and bass is presets from Nexus (I feel a little bit bad for just using presets from only one plugin).
I'm obviously going to replace the percussion with a much clickier and classier one, like in this song:

Sounds really good. Maybe the snare should be a bit more punchy or something.
My friend made this song and would like to know what people think of it.

At first it reminded me a little bit of Porcupine Tree which was neat.
I'm guessing that's him playing bass as well? If so, let him know the bass has a great tone, but (and this might be intentional), it sounds like he can't hold the groove. Like he keeps missing the beat over and over. It gets a little better as the song goes on, but that's my only gripe with it.
Great voice too.
