Kontakt is great for CPU-usage, but for quality you should go for EWQL Symphonic Orchestra - my personal favorite
seems pretty solid, though what's the difference between the package prices? I mean, it goes from 150 USD to 299 etc etc, the only difference I see is "11gb" and "32gb"
I made something experimental... Horribly mastered...

EWQL SO is much higher quality and delivers a much more realistic and natural sound, if you're playing a quick succession of the same note it won't sound like it's being played as a midi, whereas kontakt will play that same sample at the same velocity every time

Fair sure kontakt is velocity sensitive if you have a velocity sensitive keyboard on you

so i bought reaper recently and this is the first thing i've made with it
I think reaper is really cool though, better than cubase for me by far, much more reliable and less CPU intensive for a start
anybody know where I can get some good sound pools for stringed instruments : viola etc
As Dead Madman said EWQL Symphonic Orchestra is great but I think it is the most difficult thing in the world to install, they literally recommend you use an online manual so you can figure out how to get it running but it has conflicting information with all their other install guides. You can also give Edirol Orchestral a try, it doesn't sound as good as EWQL and it suffers from memory leak problems but it does its job. I would probably recommend EWQL though since it has 2 versions that are cheaper or as cheap as Edirol and it overall just sounds better.

Between Silver and Gold the difference is the amount of instruments.
I recently got Philharmonik which is pretty good but it does have it limitations.

I have no idea what I'm doing at the moment to be honest, but I'm trying to teach myself more about mixing and mastering.
Also I made this punchier I hope.

Practicing breakcore. I'm still far from good. Practice makes perfect right?
Anybody got any tips on drum patterns?

In my opinion you should rather focus on arrangement and structure. Chords, melody, harmony. Maybe try remixing a song you like, building it from "the ground up"?

Have you heard of Edirol Orchestral? That's what I use, It's pretty good actually.

I love this! I would just really like for it to come even more "over the edge" at 1.45, but I think that is a personal taste.
i got inspired to make chill, beach-vibes twangy guitar shit cos of thisispain and killerteacup (i still am drooling about that bossonova thing you uploaded) so heres this

i like the weird vocal processing but i feel like the song itself is kinda blah. the vocals dont really mix with the track very well (theyre also low in the mix imo), the synths sound a bit boring, they sound like very generic dance music patches and with the bland 4 on the floor beat theres not much that stands out about the track imo. theres not a strong bassline holding the track together, if there is its way too low in the mix. as far as making stuff punchy you did a decent job but the song itself is a bit boring.

nice drum programming, the record scratches thrown in there sound a bit cheese but maybe thats what youre going for. i like this little snippet, would be fun as the menu song to some scifi indie game or something

bit of a boring intro, i dont like the string bits in the intro they sound cheap and, idk, out of place? not sure how to describe it. when the beat drops in at like 1.00~ i like the drum programming, especially the hi hats. the synths go well with the beat and everything is mixed v well, v upbeat track but (and im not trying to sound like a cunt) it feels really generic. i dont know if this is because im not really a house music fan or whatever but honestly it really bores me. it sounds like something that an indie movie would have produced so they can shoehorn it into a club scene or something. its alright, but thats about it, if you know what i mean? i feel like you have a lot of technical skill and you would go much further if you tried to find your own sound and do somthing more unique
how do I emb soundcloud files?

i like the intro bassline but the drums seem to be too high in the mix or something. im p sure thats what it is, but i get this sort of dissonance like it just doesn't sound natural and the drums seem too, in your face compared to the bassline i guess. i think actually its partly the mix but mainly the lack of reverb on the very dry drum samples. the rest of the track has a relatively organic feeling to it but the drums sound very robotic both because it seems like you went with sort of a dance rhythm and because there's no reverb so it just sounds like dry drum machine samples. so def add some reverb. i think i hear some hi hats faintly but if they are there they're WAYY too low in the mix. obv im not an expert mixer but my thing when it comes to hi hats is, you want them to be the quietest part of your drum kit, but still audible in the context of the entire song because they're an important part of keeping the beat imo, its almost like having a click track but it doesnt sound like shit. the long attack stringy-type synth that comes in at 0.12~ i just plain do not like tbh. sounds v cheesy in the intro. later in the track when you apply a phaser to it or w/e that effect is around 2.20~ it sounds much better when its in the context of a fuller song and theres other tracks to compliment it, but on its own just thrown on top of the drums and bass i am not a fan. the piano is alright, its not outstandingly robotic and VST-sounding which makes it better than 90% of the piano rolls i usually hear on soundcloud but its also, idk, it doesnt sound "full" like a real piano does, you know? i know some VSTs are somewhat able to emulate the rich, wide sound of a piano but right now it does sound rather synthetic and as a result kinda pulls the emotion from it. i like the weird vocal scream sample you throw in throughout the track, its well processed and sounds really cool and is timed v well in the context of the track. the twangy, rambling distorted guitar is cool but i feel like you need to come up with a better synth lead than the string one from the intro because its distractingly unfitting imo. the flute bits are cool, well mixed, nice little accent to the track and when the track drops out to the synths at 2.20 is when i start to love the synthwork. if the synths were this emotive for the first part of the track it'd be muuuuch better because i really love this outro. id def recommend programming some alternate drum patterns and peppering those in because looping the same 4 bars (and to your credit you have an outro pattern) is noticeably repetitive. what i usually do is just program a base beat, a more stripped down version and then maybe a couple more "frantic" going-wild-on-the-pads style beats and just pepper them in at random to keep any one pattern from going on too long. overall though its a good track with nice emotion and its obvious you put a lot of thought into making it progress and evolve and keep it from being 4 minutes of bland synth and drum loops.
the short version: work on the drum mix, specifically adding reverb and raising the hi hats. the intro synth kinda sucks but the synthwork past 2.20 is fuckin wonderful. change up your drums more frequently so they dont seem so repetitive. you shoudl also probably write up a little break with an alternate melody so its not just the same notes droning on till the end of the track but thats more a style choice so its up to you.

some shit i threw together
shitty?? not shitty????
you decide (and tell me)
really nice feel, that lazy shuffle-y rhythm is great. But it was pretty predictable. You want to change it up a bit so it's not just 'intro sample, add beat, repeat'. Add some weird elements and it'll make it stand out more.

i am sorry but the beat is bad really bad just not good
you are also not very good at rapping. you dont stay on beat very well, your flow is clunky and awkward, your lyrics are really basic and bland, it sounds like a really really amateur freestyle. you fill dead air by dragging out your words and the whole thing just sounds really really awkward. especially the bit where you literally whisper into the mic. dont do that ever. your vocal presence is also kinda awkward, you sound like youre forcing yourself, you dont sound really into it and your voice is kinda nasally and childish
[editline]18th July 2013[/editline]
and the "daydreams and lightning" hook stuff doesn't really even make sense honestly

Yeah, it's not mastered or anything at all - just a raw recording. dunno why it recorded in mono though, it's a stereo mic.
