Uh, I guess I'll post here as well as the thread I made about it.
This is my EP, Frisson.

Hey guys, I haven't posted here in a while. I've been working on changing up my style a bit, like more drive and less ambiance.
Anyways, here's a huge wip, please tell me what you think:
Finished this track. CC?
damn I really like this to be honest, listening to it I couldn't really think of anything you should improve on, I think you've pulled off something awesome there. I love the tune and melodies.
Here is a little ambiance piece that is going to be looped in a transitional period for the player. This is for the mod Portal Repercussions (btw).
Hey guys, new track out today!

I like this.
I feel it might be too bassy for an ambient piece though. Especially one that will be looped. Guess it all depends on where the piece will be used in the mod though.
Here's a preview of an EP a friend and I started about two months ago. It was originally a school project, but we'll probably do some more tracks in the future. For now it's just a preview of the first two tracks, but we already have an intro and outro finished as well.
Ugh I cant wait til I start my music theory class in school. Then maybe I can finally get some melodies for my beats like this one.

Any suggestions on an instrument? I was thinking some strings and brass.
music theory doesn't matter that much.
the most you need to learn is scales and chords and just play a LOT of piano or whatever instrument you have,
you'll get a sense for melodies and harmonics and then you'll have no problem composing.

ehh, music theory is very beneficial.
ehh, music theory is very beneficial.
idk... what matters most is really developing your musical intuition... you dont need to know what a tonic and dominant is to resolve them.

Well, it sounds like you know how to do basic stuff, but your track doesn't really progress towards anything. I'd advise reading up on some music theory.

Not really my kind of music, but I like it.
I didn't mind the windy synth sound at first, but I have to say I was kinda glad when it stopped for a moment at around the 2 minute mark though :v. I think it might be the melody as well though. You could try some call and answer type stuff with different instruments/synths.
ehh, music theory is very beneficial.
you write the sort of music where it is very beneficial so of course you would say that
music theory is beneficial, it's far more than just about melodies but i'd argue you shouldn't worry about it too much unless you literally do not know what you're doing. It's mostly intuitive, and unless your brain can't process pitch properly (i've had a few composer mates like this), theory is something you rarely if ever actually think about while creating music.. Hell, one of those mates used to compose based on theory alone and it genuinely just sounded bad, he'd always give me shit for not following tiny little aspects (because I go by feel) whether it be genre related or a specific chord change, but then he'd show me music that sounded to be honest god awful, and I hate to say that because it was all theoretically sound what he was doing, but it just didn't translate so to speak. Eventually he got out of that mind set though and actually made some pretty ace stuff
it is definitely beneficial to have theory backing you up though, just don't rely on it solely, gotta express yourself and some such shit. The only case where i'd actually rely on having theory in mind for a track is if you're trying to produce/create something for a very specific genre with set rules, ie if you're trying to make a 12 bars blues song, etc, but then it's still more just applying theory to the structure, as far as melodies go you gotta suss em out by feel within the scales, which you learn to do as you go anyway
you write the sort of music where it is very beneficial so of course you would say that
True, ha ha.
I'm not saying though that purely music theory is needed to write good music, but what I was saying was that music theory is helpful when your in a bind. Or need some guidance of some sort in a specific place in your music. To be honest I write mostly with my musical intuition, but that is purely because I don't need to think about the theory to much in the bulk of my writing. I've already study theory for 3 years.(all done yeah!)
The point is that I think a good foundation in music theory can only benefit you, I don't write music thinking only about theory that is only a small portion of it, the main portion is your own creativity and your musical intuition that has been stated many times over the last few comments.
That is why I said music theory is very beneficial.
Hey guys, I made some "atmospheric" ambient alt. rock stuff inspired by M83

I was sort of playing devil's advocate as i do agree with you
I wish I had the patience to study it with any sense of dedication but I just dabble every now and then

I can understand that, theory can be pretty boring sometimes, even with someone teaching it.
Side Story:
There is a chick in our music department and I feel kind of bad for her because she has failed music theory every semester. The sad thing is that we started the same classes together and 3 years later I'm all done with music theory and she's just getting to second year theory. Theory is broken up into first year theory(two semesters), second year theory(two semesters), orchestration(one semester), and form & analysis(one semester). She failed first semester of first year theory, and then had to wait until the next year to retake it so she could move on to the second semester. Then that year she failed second semester and had to wait another year to retake it, finally she passed it last semester.
But I expect the same thing to happen in second year theory, because second year theory is a lot harder than first year theory (I wonder why ha ha). Anyways I'll give her credit though because she's determine to keep going with it and hasn't given up where most would have already.
You also might ask why they make you wait a year to retake a class instead of doing it the following semester and the reason being is that at my school, our music department isn't that big, maybe 50-60 people, compared to some super schools where its 100-200 people. Smaller department means not a big enough demand to offer two of the same course per year. This can be a problem for anyone trying to graduate on time.
Thankfully I haven't had that problem since I've made the deans list every year and technically I'm graduating early because a music education degree takes 4 and a half years. I'm doing it in only 4 years. I'll graduate in spring of 2014.
Here's a tune I'm making for a local DJ, I uploaded a public clip yesterday to see what people think. Please leave me some feedback :)

I really like the work you're doing with polyrhythms at the moment, it's interesting stuff. I'd say in general the clips here are a bit dry (I know they're not finished). Do you have a plan for an album or something?

Thanks; I'm mostly just playing with time signatures and polyrhythms out of boredom combined with my habit of not finishing songs. I don't have any actual plans but If I do make another album along the line I'm pretty sure i'll finish most of these snippets and toss them in there.
Working on a track for my next album

Need to do a LOT of work before this is anywhere near a fully listenable song, but i'm just playing around with ideas of where I wanna take it atm

I don't usually do covers, but I felt like doing one of KK Cruisin' from Animal Crossing today.

The playing is somewhat sloppy. Maybe I'll re-record it some other day, don't feel like working on it any more now.
Sup guys, I AM a rapper, heh heh
Finally finished this song called, "Wild Call".
It's a lot different then what I usually do, so please give me some critiques on how I could progress on making it better.
