Managed to actually "finish" my first chiptune song, and I use finish lightly
Really like it, better than anything I've written. I do have a few things to say though, I think you should probably get some better percussion samples, there's a bunch of nice samples here. You're using 3osc and magical 8-bit aren't you? You might get flack off of "purist" chipmusicians, but I think it sounds great. This isn't meant to be disrespectful to anyone here, but you're more likely to get better chipmusic specific advice from one of the forums, the one I posted a link to before, or ucollective.org are pretty good for that kinda stuff.

I've never been good at percussion hence why I tried to stick with such a simple beat in that song. I'll check those samples out! [editline]5th August 2013[/editline] Tbh I have no idea what I'd use instead of 3osc and Magical8Bit, would a purist want me to make midi-files and then play through an emulated SNES soundengine [sp]I have no idea how music actually works on old consoles[/sp] or something? :v:

I saw your post in DD, which is how I found out about your music, ad that you used them. But yeah, percussion isn't my strong point either. As for the second thing, "purists" like stuff that would run on the actual hardware, e.g. gameboy, NES, amiga etc. I write stuff in famitracker, an NES tracker that runs on windows, but you could write on hardware using LSDJ(gameboy) or NTRQ(NES), but you really don't have to. There's also PC trackers that cater to almost every system out there, and multi-platform ones such as Deflemask, which you can use to create gameboy, NES, commodore64 and various other things. And if you're talking about GCSSX (or whatever it's called) you'll get flack for using it, although personally, I don't mind it. If you're into making SNES stuff, there's people who use soundfonts and stuff, and others that use special converters, more detail here
would a purist want me to make midi-files and then play through an emulated SNES soundengine or something? :v:
The SNES actually doesn't read MIDI. But if you want it to be more true to the SNES' audio CPU, you should limit yourself to eight tracks. Four for the NES, with a maximum of three(I think) channels playing a note simultaneously.
I know it doesn't read MIDI but it works in a similar way doesn't it?
iirc, snes music is all sample based, rather than soundchip based, if you see what I mean. [editline]wait[/editline]
The audio subsystem consists of an 8-bit Sony SPC700, a 16-bit DSP, 64 kB[SUP][/SUP] of SRAM shared by the two chips, and a 64 byte boot ROM. The audio subsystem is clocked at a nominal 24.576 MHz in both NTSC and PAL systems. The DSP generates a 16-bit waveform at 32 kHz by mixing input from 8 independent voices and an 8-tap FIR filter typically used for reverberation. Each voice can play its sample at a variable rate, with Gaussian interpolation, stereo panning, and ADSR, linear, non-linear, or direct volume envelope adjustment. Hardware on the cartridge, expansion port, or both can provide stereo audio data for mixing into the DSP's analog audio output before it leaves the console.
it's my second trial to do vocoder stuffs. tell me what I should do now...
