I'm trying to write a song- is screwing about, tapping out lots of different melodies on my keyboard, recording that, and then going back to that and finding something to expand on a good strategy?

Pretty much, anything goes when it comes to making music as long as you find it working for you.
Personally, I write riffs on the guitar and then build my music around that, but some people start with melodies instead and do riffs around that and either way works. :)

The synth that starts at like 0.9 honestly feels a bit out of place, I don't really like the sound of it, make it softer and maybe add some light delay on it.
