What's wrong with those god awful pop chords generally they use the same chords as most other songs do
What's wrong with those god awful pop chords generally they use the same chords as most other songs do
After being abused and whored for 20ish years now it starts to get a wee bit tiring to your ears
they can still be used well and I don't really think thats the case there's no real 'shitty pop chords' that are specific to pop anyway, pop songs use loads of different chords the art of the pop song even in the modern day is actually really complex, publishing companies just have the system right down to a T so they know exactly what sort of music they want. People who say that "pop music is horrible and stupid" really need to read up on it because the system that creates and promotes pop music these days is when you think about it absolutely incredible. Everything is tailored to keep that song stuck in your head for ages and ages. It's ridiculously cool in fact its weird that a lot of people who say "I appreciate all genres and no specific genre should be completely written off as terrible" make an exception for pop music so they can rip into whoever's popular sorry weird tangent but yeah
I wasn't being prejudice towards ALL pop music, several pop hits in the past 5 years have a place in my heart, but there's that generic 4 chord pattern that the musicians doing it blatantly for money and not passion use (I say they use, it's probably a ghost producer they hired for £4,000)
but there's that generic 4 chord pattern that the musicians doing it blatantly for money and not passion use (I say they use, it's probably a ghost producer they hired for £4,000)
wow lol. really? just because you saw that axis of awesome video? You know what, that isn't even half the truth. There's like a billion things like that you can pick out from popular music across the decades, picking the same progression in another key wouldn't be any harder to do to be honest. Hell, if you work in a DAW you literally drag it to another key. If chord progressions are the important part in how much you respect a musician then you probably exclusively listen to modal jazz. even though i am kind of making killerteacup's point again, it's not like these chords automatically make money. they just evoke a certain kind of feeling (kind of hopeful but still sad) which encourages sort of triumphant melancholic songs. the kind that are easily relatable, which a lot of pop music is about. that doesn't mean that the person who uses them is blatantly after money, it just means that he or she wants to evoke that emotion. why dont you just go ahead and write a really good pop song if it's so goddamned easy
Sorry for my lousy and aggressive response there, I posted that at like 2 am so I may seem a little ratty. But Croix I fully understand what you mean, and I regret what I posted before, because I know you and killerteacup put across a good point for the chords, it's not about the chords, it's about how they're used.

I made this lil' ol thing for a remix contest. Not sure how good it is (tbh it's a bit rushed). http://play.beatport.com/contests/pleasurekraft-tarantula/514df146b8ed7414ecab9439

this is a rough draft, i'd appreciate some criticism

Hmm... I guess its time to bring out my trap music..
https://www.box.com/embed/nm8fw4cvr9iieil.swf
Edit: For some reason this is the only way for me to post it on here without it redirecting to another file..
I'll critique in a second, but here's some songs: Critique whichever one you want - I'm not forcing anyone to listen to all of them. But these are the ones that I am working on at the moment. [editline]24th March 2013[/editline]
I made this lil' ol thing for a remix contest. The big thing I'm noticing is that the mixing on this isn't all there, really. It sounds like everything's competing to be on top. It sounds neat, it's just how it comes together that's wanky. You should learn to EQ, and learn that no sound really deserves the entire spectrum. You should let instruments have their own space in the spectrum - i.e. let the bass have the bass but don't let your bass take absolutely all of the high end. The other thing is you need to prioritize sounds. The more important sounds should be louder/loud enough. Your background should maintain some distance volume-wise.
I need some minor help with chords, I got a song I'm writing that currently goes like this; [Verse] A C G D A C G D [Pre-chorus] A F C G [Chorus] C G A F C G A F Then repeat, currently it is supposed to go like this; Verse Pre-chorus Chorus Verse Pre-chorus Chorus guitar solo (not sure what chords I want here) Chorus Since it is a rock ballad I feel that it could do with some more chords, but since I really don't know a lot of chords (I am willing and want to learn though obviously) I've only used D C G A F (the ones I know) and I'd love to have someone help me out, both with helping me add some more chords and give me help with how I can use those chords for sticks and stuff between the chorus and verse for instance, and for the guitar solo. :smile: Thank you for taking your time reading this!
ill help u! okay those are nice and pleasant chords but you dont always want nice and pleasant instead of just major chords throw in a 7th note to give it some danger A Cmaj7 G D
A C7M G D Q Q Q Q E||----------------------|-------|| B||--5----5----3----7----|-------|| G||--6----4----4----7----|-------|| D||--7----5----5----7----|-------|| A||--7----3----5----5----|-------|| E||--5---------3---------|-------||
now theres a bit of stress in the second chord, giving it a bit of a melancholy feel. maj7 in that position is very bittersweet but its halted from getting too sad by that perky D. [Pre-chorus] A F C G lets do something weird here. its the prechorus and it needs to be striking so that it can highlight the chorus! lets switch the F and the G because it voice leads better: how about A, G, Cmaj7 and umm well that last chord is a F but the change into from F into C alone isnt really that striking. lets substitute! C Major: C d e F G a bdim lets substitute that F Major with a fucking m6 because thats a very sexy jazz substitution with a tritone. A, G, Cmaj7, Fm6 while we're at it lets sub out G with Bmin7 because it leads much better than Gmaj7
A C7M G D A Bm7 C7M Fm6 Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q E||----------------------|----------------------|-------|-------|| B||--5----5----3----7----|--5----3----5----6----|-------|-------|| G||--6----4----4----7----|--6----2----4----5----|-------|-------|| D||--7----5----5----7----|--7----4----5----6----|-------|-------|| A||--7----3----5----5----|--7----2----3----5----|-------|-------|| E||--5---------3---------|--5-------------------|-------|-------||
that Fm6 chord is super-mysterious isnt it and it has this beautiful tension till it resolves into C. [Chorus] C G A F well thats a great chorus progression, easy hook material, except id say C, G, A, Fmaj7.
A C7M G D A Bm7 C7M Fm6 C G A F7M Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q E||----------------------|----------------------|----------------------| B||--5----5----3----7----|--5----3----5----6----|--5----3----5----1----| G||--6----4----4----7----|--6----2----4----5----|--5----4----6----2----| D||--7----5----5----7----|--7----4----5----6----|--5----5----7----2----| A||--7----3----5----5----|--7----2----3----5----|--3----5----7----3----| E||--5---------3---------|--5-------------------|-------3----5----1----|
that position changes the maj7's quality, less sweet and maybe a bit more mournful, like a bit of a quiver at the end of a sentence
this is a rough draft, i'd appreciate some criticism
It sounds really compressed or something, everythign seems to be the same volume. Don't be afraid to have some elements quieter than others.
trapstyle+jerseyclub
That bass if fucking awesome and when it switches up to a more housey synth at 1:23 is sick. That said the synth at 3:27 hurts my ears.

This is nice, I love the vocal hits. The snare sounds a bit strange being so hard panned to the left and I think it could use a bit more high end. The bit at 2:30 is nice and gives a bit of needed variation. I think the mid part of the song could also use a few more percussive elements, sucha as hats or toms etc. I also think a few glitchy rests could work quite well in the mid section. ____________________________________________________________ I'm working on another progressive house/trance remix at the moment, this time of Andy Blueman's Sea Tides. Hey guys, I'm on the road in Washington right now! The mountains are beautiful. I don't think I've seen a more beautiful place than this so far.
Why doesn't anyone wanna comment on my songs D: are they that bad?!

I don't know what it is, I'm just not a fan of that open hi-hat. Literally everything else about it is spot-on, but that open hi-hat seems very out of place. Perhaps a different open hi-hat or a closed hi-hat would fit better. I think it just sounds like a little too much for the calmness in the beginning, like the open-hihat has too much of a harsh splash to it if that makes sense. But thanks a ton for your critique, I'll definitely look into it man! I'm actually not really skilled with straight up Dubstep, but I think I could say that your later synths in "what" have a bit of a mono low-quality sound to them. The second one sounds pretty neat. Reminds me of a blend between your harsh (in a good way) style with the more classical forms of Dubstep. Go over to Soundcloud, open an account, and then show us. Soundcloud is awesome too because you get to follow Facepunchers and Facepunchers like me will listen to your music throughout the day!

If someone steals your music, you're legally able to press charges. You should also talk to soundcloud if you have some problems with it. Like Wauterboi said, no one is going to click on a .swf link.
Okay I will upload it to soundcloud. I wasn't sure if their policy gives all rights to soundcloud or not.. but hold on a minute and I'll update this post with some music after it uploads.
