I thought the percussion was rhythmically interesting and I liked the sample pallette, but I found it hard to feel a groove. In part because the synth mix overpowered some of the details, but mostly because it lacked snap or oomph. The arrangement of the sounds was done well, but it needed some compression and velocity variation to make it feel dynamic and moving. Other than mix/master issues I noticed, it sounded like some of the drums had too much release for their tempo. As if they re-trigger and overlap too hard.
When I start making beats I like to begin with 2 or 3 sounds. Even of the audio involved isn't literally traditional percussion, I try to arrange the rhythm with the mindset of (kick)/(snare). Generally speaking, these are the instruments with the snapping compression I'm talking about. I can't give a first hand rundown on compression, but there's countless videos with various methods to achieve that sound. After the skeleton of a pattern set up its just a matter of making it progressively complex and playing around with the arrangement some more to mix it up. Hope this help any.

Sounds great but the guy above is right, maybe change the sample, try filtering it and make their decay less gradual - to me it sounds like if the hi hats cut off abruptly that might sound pretty nice
either way the hi hats sort of stand out
Anyhoo this is one of mine

Super chill DJ Shadow sort of mix I did to try out some instrumental hip hop
Loving those last two tracks!
I've started a side project under 'Jamie Ryan' which I'm going to release experimental, chill & all other genre's which isn't house (you get what I mean). I started a track today called 'Lake', which you can listen to a sample below. It's actually quite hard to produce a track in a different genre you're not used to.
I'd appreciate some followers too hehe.

Currently working on that track, I learned a few techniques in making my sounds a bit bigger and finally learned how to make the tonal swoosh thing :v:

you should do it as often as possible, tbh, just switch genres to challenge yourself
like for example the last song I did before this one was a bossa nova post rock thing, its fun to switch it up

I'm looking for a singer with a more alternative/pop rock style voice for a new track I'm working on (and no it's not dumb pony shit so don't worry). Anyone know where i can find somehow who fits the bill that i'd be able to get in touch with. All the talented singers I know have voices that are just too high.

The snare that comes in around the end doesn't really fit in well, in my opinion, and it doesn't sound like there's enough percussion on the left to even out the stuff that's panned to the right. Other than that, this is fucking great.
Is there a good guide for melody making out there?

Will change that! Thanks! This is one of the first tracks I make since I learned that panning is... important.. so yeah :P

I think a bigger symbol crash or impact sound when the drop hits and making the kick a little louder too might make it drop "harder" if that's what your looking for, but I think its already pretty good drop for the style of music.
Is there a good guide for melody making out there?
I've been wondering about this too, but I haven't been able to find anything useful. I don't think there is really a solid "method" to creating a melody, you just kind of have to get creative and experiment until it sounds good. Knowing music theory and chords also helps I think

I updated my track a bit.
Anyone have any advice on mixing bass? Whenever I try and make something bassy I can never mix it together properly without it clipping and sounding like shit.

Right before the drop, add a pause (a short sample or something). It builds anticipation and adds contrast to the drop.
There's a good example in this Lemaitre song (1:55):

Get a keyboard, or use whatever feature in your DAW that can let you use your computer keyboard as one. Dicking around on it usually helps me think of something.

Music theory, learn scales, how chords work and you'll find that understanding what works in music is gonna become a whooooooole lot easier.
Don't listen to people who say learning music theory stunts your creativity, that's like saying learning a language is going to stump your creative writing, it is retarded and even though knowing music theory isn't going to substitute actual talent it is going to make putting your talent to use so much easier.

I wish I never had to drop it. It was lowering my GPA Since I was failing. The teacher was a fucking cunt too. He only touched the piano on the first day of the class. IT was like he was just teaching us how to read sheet music not actually listen to anything. Good thing I stole the book.

That kind of FlyLo sounding drum. I was inspired to do electronic music by him but could never emulate that sound.
That kind of FlyLo sounding drum. I was inspired to do electronic music by him but could never emulate that sound.
i honestly didnt really do much to them, just compressed them and threw an eq on each sample
kick: http://puu.sh/6XpNb.png
snare: http://puu.sh/6XpTc.png
it depends a lot on the kind of drum samples you use too. if you find a naturally dope snare sound then its gonna sound super dope when you compress and eq that shit
