Just been messing about with some house-y synths. Kinda reminds me of music for a level select screen or something.
ill help u! okay those are nice and pleasant chords but you dont always want nice and pleasant instead of just major chords throw in a 7th note to give it some danger A Cmaj7 G D
A C7M G D Q Q Q Q E||----------------------|-------|| B||--5----5----3----7----|-------|| G||--6----4----4----7----|-------|| D||--7----5----5----7----|-------|| A||--7----3----5----5----|-------|| E||--5---------3---------|-------||
now theres a bit of stress in the second chord, giving it a bit of a melancholy feel. maj7 in that position is very bittersweet but its halted from getting too sad by that perky D. [Pre-chorus] A F C G lets do something weird here. its the prechorus and it needs to be striking so that it can highlight the chorus! lets switch the F and the G because it voice leads better: how about A, G, Cmaj7 and umm well that last chord is a F but the change into from F into C alone isnt really that striking. lets substitute! C Major: C d e F G a bdim lets substitute that F Major with a fucking m6 because thats a very sexy jazz substitution with a tritone. A, G, Cmaj7, Fm6 while we're at it lets sub out G with Bmin7 because it leads much better than Gmaj7
A C7M G D A Bm7 C7M Fm6 Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q E||----------------------|----------------------|-------|-------|| B||--5----5----3----7----|--5----3----5----6----|-------|-------|| G||--6----4----4----7----|--6----2----4----5----|-------|-------|| D||--7----5----5----7----|--7----4----5----6----|-------|-------|| A||--7----3----5----5----|--7----2----3----5----|-------|-------|| E||--5---------3---------|--5-------------------|-------|-------||
that Fm6 chord is super-mysterious isnt it and it has this beautiful tension till it resolves into C. [Chorus] C G A F well thats a great chorus progression, easy hook material, except id say C, G, A, Fmaj7.
A C7M G D A Bm7 C7M Fm6 C G A F7M Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q E||----------------------|----------------------|----------------------| B||--5----5----3----7----|--5----3----5----6----|--5----3----5----1----| G||--6----4----4----7----|--6----2----4----5----|--5----4----6----2----| D||--7----5----5----7----|--7----4----5----6----|--5----5----7----2----| A||--7----3----5----5----|--7----2----3----5----|--3----5----7----3----| E||--5---------3---------|--5-------------------|-------3----5----1----|
that position changes the maj7's quality, less sweet and maybe a bit more mournful, like a bit of a quiver at the end of a sentence
Wow, this is exactly what I am looking for, thanks a lot mate, you're my hero today (like for real) :smile:
Don't worry, I just suck and make stuff anyway, I have fun, and don't give no fucks about it. I mean obviously I put in the effort to make something cool but at the end of the day I just don't know how and I'm feelin' fine. Here's a piece of shit I made just to go wild with the EZDrummer VST.
I totally forgot ezdrummer existed.. LOL
I made a short song. I think it's nice, but it needs some work. It just doesn't flow right. Can someone give a little advice?
I totally forgot ezdrummer existed.. LOL
Super old bu super useful haha.
I made a short song. Can someone give a little advice?
Well firstly it's kinda just quarter notes. Yeah, no, it's almost exclusively quarter notes. Not only does that make it a little boring, but when you switch into some occasional eighth notes it sounds extremely choppy. The chords are neat but seriously do something interesting with it. So boring! Add another instrument or two in the background or add some other melody, as is it's just 1 2 3 4.
Haha, add a sped up amen break and it's totally the menu music for a 90's racing game. I like.
I don't know what it is, I'm just not a fan of that open hi-hat. Literally everything else about it is spot-on, but that open hi-hat seems very out of place. Perhaps a different open hi-hat or a closed hi-hat would fit better. I think it just sounds like a little too much for the calmness in the beginning, like the open-hihat has too much of a harsh splash to it if that makes sense. But thanks a ton for your critique, I'll definitely look into it man!
Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you and I'm working on trying to get something that sounds nice at the moment.
Trancey/electronic stuff:
I like the pluck at the beginning, the delay is nice on it. I really think this intro section could use a bit more movement though, mainly in the pads. I wasn't expecting that grungy saw synth but I think it sounds fine, I think a bass could go with it nicely. The gated synth at ~0:56 is really good, nice work. The low pass is a good idea but it just sounds really harsh, especially on headphones. You should try highpassing most of the instruments at this point up until the kick comes in, dropping the filter. The bit after the kick is really nice with the phasing pluck, it gives it a really driving feel. I think when the other pluck comes in over the top it could use a bit more, there definitely appears to be a lack of real bass (except for the kick).
And the trap music:
I like this, the intro is dark and the drums are pretty groovy. I think the percussive elements could sit slightly higher in the mix though, especially some of the snare rolls you have. I also think the sub could be louder with the kicks being a bit quieter.
Mastering is unfinished, and it's a bit short:
I really like the percussive elements that said I think the main synth that plays during the intro could use a bit more movement whether in volume or by filtering it. The piano is nice and the glitchy elements you have going on are really good.
Just been messing about with some house-y synths. The bassline is good. ___________________________________ Hey guys, here is another song I've been working on (this time an original). I'm trying out using a few instruments and elements I'm not used to using in my house songs. I seem to be spamming the thread, I guess I'm just excited about no longer having writers block.

It seems a bit, I dunno, lighter, than house I'm used to (could just be the music I normally listen to, but this isn't a bad thing; I actually like it this way). EDIT: Updated version of that WIP I posted earlier. There is a bit more dynamic range, a few other minor changes, and a new instrument at the end :O
Something which I might actually make a proper song out of for shits and giggles. After doing so many rammstein conversions to midi , I noticed that they all follow this basic song pattern of "riff, riff, vocal section, riff, vocal section, junction, main riff, pause, riff, interlude, second junction, main until end". Decided to make a very rushed midi from some shit I was just jamming on my guitar. It actually sounds quite nice if you use proper instruments and not midi :L Here is "disturbed", obviously still needs to be finished. song lyrics again will be inspired by rammstein, by being about child abuse , except not actually stating it at all , such as "the demon comes to you in your dreams" in such a way that until the last verse bit, it all just sounds like some repeating nightmare, until it reveals the demon is a person. So yeah. Edgy rammstein stuff for shits and giggles.
Does this sound better than just the piano on it's own?
Does this sound better than just the piano on it's own?
The string melody is a little simplistic for my taste. It's kinda just dinking around. As well with your piano, if you really want to put in the time you need to alter the velocity for all of the notes. They sound very unhuman as is, just mechanically plinking away at everything with the same weight. And technically, yes it sounds better, but that's just because the piano is frankly a bit boring as well so adding more instruments is naturally going to add some depth.
Every single note has a different velocity setting already :suicide: I record through midi, so it picks up the note velocity of my controller.
Regardless of whether it is or not, they all sound painfully similar and processed. I was hoping I'd made it clear the real issue here is the actual writing, I don't feel any strong direction or even an idea with the song.
Been fucking around with this track for the past few days, decided to arrange it tonight and add a lil somethin somethin. I couldn't be arsed to record a second bass part with my Arturia; not sure if that'd improve it. Thoughts?

Excellent timbre, balance, and mastery. Any tips you have would be greatly appreciated. As for improvements, your piano melody sometimes seems to get lost or awkward. Here's a cover I did of a song by renard. I didn't really do anything new except singing but figuring out all the harmonization by ear was a good exercise. Remove the S in http and media tags will work.

I play with settings on my synths just to see what happens, and if I like the result I keep it. Sorry if that is an unspecific answer.
So you didn't do any post processing?
Very little. I have a filter on the drums and one of the synths, but that is only used for effects (they aren't usually on). I have an equalizer on each instrument to take out certain frequencies (mostly lows/highs that don't add to the mix), and finally I have a combined limiter/compressor on the master track.

I'm not too keen on the vocals(I like they're cut up though). Also I don't like that sound at the start? Not sure how to describe it but it's obvious. You're stuff is getting a lot better and I actually just realised I wasn't following you.
