I haven't posted anything in a long while, so here is a little something I've been working on today. I've had this melody running through my head for the past few days and I decided today that I should probably write it down. I am no where done with this piece, because as I've said I just started it today.
Anyways, this is a piano piece and the name is a placeholder for now.

Is this manual midi or midi keyboard? Right now it sounds incredibly robotic, especially with some of the staccato chords in the higher ranges. If it's manual vary your note velocity, painstaking as it is. If it's midi keyboard, I don't know what to tell you.
In other news guys pls telleme if A or B was bester I'm so tooorn
Also made this ugh

Here's a bit of madness I've been working on:

I don't really know a lot about producing and that, but whatever.
Thank you for listening!
I was surprised. Well done. I bet you dig DP.

Manual midi, but I think it may of been the plugin I was using. I have super nice piano plugin that I normally use, but it sucks up a lot memory, so I don't normally use it unless I have a finish product. Thanks for the thoughts though, I went back and tweaked a few areas.
It's not even so much dependent on the VST as you need to have varying velocity for repetitive notes, even if just a little. When it's a scale or note progression it's not a big deal, but MIDI sounds it's fakest when you have repeating notes with identical velocity. Also look into the 'humanize' feature a lot of VSTs have that will automatically vary velocity to a degree.
that is so adorable
but pls learn it really helps with snappier drums
help me pls
i've turned knobs and shit before but i can never tell what does what

main things you should learn are threshold, attack, release, and knee in my opinion. you get those down and you're on your way to fame and women

I love your drums as is though, I assumed there was some secret, must just be in the EQ or the samples you choose or something
Compressors are pretty easy but here we goooooooo
Threshold is the volume at which your signal starts to be compressed so the lower your threshold, the more sensitive your compressor becomes and it begins to compress earlier
Ratio is the amount it compresses by, how hardcore the compression is going to be basically. If you make it too hardcore it just sounds like a little click but
Knee is how smooth the transition into your compression is - without any knee basically as soon as it compresses its just going to compress like a motherfucker even if the signal is only a tiny bit above what you want, so smooth knee makes it a bit more flowy and smooth which you may or may not want depending on the situation
Then you have Attack, Release and sometimes hold which determines the time of your compression
So your attack is how long it takes for your compressor to activate when it receives a loud audio signal. If you make it too fast you remove the snappiness from your drums because it compresses the original BANG but if it's too slow it won't do shit to your drum because by the time it activates your drum has already stopped being that loud.
Release is how long it takes for your compressor to start to deactivate. So if you set it to like, 1 second its just going to be sort of the same volume for 1 second before it starts to reduce in volume. This shit's pretty fun because if you put a compressor after a reverb with a really long release it can sound pretty trippy. That's soort of how people do gated reverbs actually.
Also loads of compressors have make up gain - because your compressor when it compresses will make your drums sound a lot softer, so make up gain helps bring them back up to the level they were on before you compressed them, just with additional compression. This is really useful when you have the right levels and you just have a few sections which are clipping that you want to remove
I'm pretty sure thats about it, maybe I'm wrong in some areas but I'm pretty sure I'm right (if not im sure someone will correct me)

Since We're all on the topic of drums. Here is a new breakcore demo I made
The levels are a tad bit off but I'm satisfied with this one. Also the time signature is 7/4

Do something about the guitar. Sounds kinda off. Add a little reverb and some more drums then you'll be set.
the guitar sounds fine to me
the guitar sounds fine to me
I must be just picky.
Btw are the drums on my track too crazy? Or crazy enough?
I think they're appropriately crazy, and you pulled off 7/4 well. If I read that you made it in 7/4 before listening I probably would have expected something that sounded weird and didn't really "make sense", but it worked pretty well. The piano crackles a little bit in the intro though, that's all I think needs fixing.

I'd also take a look at your chord progression. There are some notes that are off.
Indeed 7/4...it could work with what you have. If you so choose to go with this I would highly suggest at least some mid to lower frequency tones. There is alot going on with that percussion track it needs some body building. Good job on that 7/4!
-----------------------------------------------
Heres a breakbeat piece I am working on...a true wip. There are alot of placeholder tones I am using atm but I am sold compositionally on the percussion (excluding a particular kick) bass & vox.
I am finding I am not getting a solid lining up of particular vocals due to their perspective effects...and its buggin me, but I am aware.
Any feedback always appreciated!

Aw Shit I forgot to make sure all the chord vsts were in minor! Thanks
Third backing track in the making! Big wip at the moment, guess the gangsta rap original track.

You know that feeling when you make something you think is fucking crazy, and you get all excited and want to share it before it's even nearly finished?
Here's a few bars.

Very nice
All of this is just my opinions, so don't sweat it too much but-
Piano intro is a little bit simplistic. I want to guess it's either that the chord progression is initially too obvious or just that there isn't enough variation between the notes in the chords. The piano sound itself isn't quite to my liking but maybe that's preference. It didn't sound 10000% midi, but I definitely didn't think it was a real piano, either.
The drum beat, er, I don't know. That style was never really my thing. It was a bit jarring how suddenly it started but maybe that's the idea.
Last, the low end feels pretty neglected. Either try to change the mixing a bit to give it better coverage or consider adding in a lower instrument part later on. I spent the whole 1:45 waiting for the bass and low-mid to get filled in but it never happened.

Damn I really thought I made the bass and mid more noticable. They are kinda subtle and start the same time as the drums. And I agree with what you said about the piano though. Im pretty novice still. thanks for being so in depth
