how do you get those snares to sound so heavy and punchy? i'm sure it has a lot to do with sample choice, but are there any tips you can give?

Compression and EQing, that's all there really is to punchy and snappy drums!
Also placing things at different levels in the mix is somewhat important too.

i've never really understood the importance of compression on drums... when i'm making my own samples i pretty much never use compression. i'll have to look into that a little more I guess

It's less about using compression for volume adjustments and more for shaping the transients of the sound, i.e. making it more/less snappy and therefore making it pop out/blend in the mix in regard to what I meant
-snip- wrong song uploaded :/ reaper didnt overwrite my saves like i wanted it to
Also have a little mastering and bass line added to my previous song. Looking for any advice on where to go from here. Planning on getting some vocals in the next month once my mic comes in. Lookin for a drummer atm.
Got a concept here i did in 2 takes, wondering if its worth refining. It takes a while to build up but I think it progresses nicely:

Forgive me being a bit impatient and scrubbing through parts of the songs, six minutes is a deal too much for my attention span. The first thing to note is that the transition at 3:00 is a bit disappointing. I'd love for the bass to have more presence. Overall it feels there's a lack of a solid tempo and general misdirection, which is something you'll just get past with practice and experience. Lastly the guitar tone feels a bit unpleasant and I'm not sure I like it. When you've got too many strings going it gets muddy.
It seems you've also posted the same song twice instead of the other song you mention on accident.
That being said omg FP I need help. Final deadline for my little short film is next week and I still can't decide what musics to did. I don't like song 1 but that might just be because I've been listening to it waaaaay too much.

Agree for song 1 and disagree for song 3? Halp me facepunch im indesicisioned :(
Tried my hand at making some chiptune, mixed with some 80s dance. It was actually quite fun working with an 8bit vst, never done it before!

You don't need to pick my post, you can choose anyone, but please leave feedback for someone else when you're posting something, even it's not something up your alley. We're trying to get this thread into feedback pay-it-forward mode.

Its awesome. Love the soundscape it puts ya in.
Just wondering if anyone here has experience with chip trackers/chiptune trackers
I recently contacted an indie game dev, asking if I could compose for a project of his. He replied saying that they could use three ambient tracks and one for a boss fight.
I've gotten used to the note input for MilkyTracker, but I looking for anyone with more experience to guide me through some waveforms (especially bass drum/snare drum/percussion in general) and effects. Also need some advice for chiptune ambient... I'm not too sure how to approach that
What this guy said
ask weirdness
Also ditch milky, its a bit outdated now, imo you'd be better off with OpenMPT. Also make sure you're working with .IT rather than any of the other formats, .XM doesn't have the same kind of control that .IT does, and .MOD has that stupid thing with the way the channels work in that two are panned left and two are panned right. I can't talk for .S3M because I've never used it, but yeah. Also the best thing you can do to learn how to do ambient chip is to listen, check out _zebra's kyoufushou selections, have a look at his tracks, take them apart and take inspiration in it. Try and see if you can get the guy to send you some examples of stuff that he likes, and work off of that.
[editline]shit[/editline]
90% of .IT files sound like death in milky btw, I tried playing some of my own stuff in it and it is painful.
Ooh, the chiptune part is very cool. Bass nice, mm that funky jam. Quality jam content. During the breakdown I'm not sure the staccato chords are my favorite, could use a little more lead in or something to smooth the transitions out even if you still want to keep it snappy.
Speaking of the opposite of that! I added another repeat of that song from before and I've upped it to 8 guitar parts :\ Not sure that paid off but it was fun to make. Took me like a billion takes for each part.

very happy and energetic, i like it, you need to work on that mixing/mastering/production (i dont know about all these terms) because its sounding very muddy at the moment
if you can fix that and make it into a proper song instead of just a 30 second clip, it would be great
kinda getting less nuts plus-tech squeeze box vibes
I can agree with that. It's probably not even so much the mixing but more to do with the 8 guitars at once. The two lead harmony parts have incredibly heavy distortion.
https://soundcloud.com/logan-mcdaniel/250-3-justharmonyguitars/s-Ww1LK
I'll have to try and tone my guitars more for harmony than solo, but I also think there's some compression loss of quality getting introduced somewhere.
As for the 30 seconds, 99% of the time I just come up with a cool one-shot idea for a song, and don't have the attention span or ideas to keep it interesting much longer than a minute or so.

Ah jeez, I've also now realized I hear much better in my right ear than my left. Welp, RIP stereo *shrugs*

tryna break away from doing too much of the same old in terms of style
trance is pretty fun. I might go ahead and follow through with this one
but for now I take a break.

I'm just gonna say now that I'm really terrible at this whole song-making business, but I think I've almost got something going here. Intro's total garbage and it's repetitive even after trying to fix that, but I figure I could toss this in here and see what you guys have to say, since I could really use the advice before I try to go any further with it.
Now that that's out of the way, this is just something I threw together to see what I might be able to do with VOPM with Ristar instruments + SN-EMU + a couple random drum sounds crushed to sound similar to the YM2612's DAC. Didn't really have anything particular in mind while making it, other than "level theme I guess". I sort of like what I have right now, but I'm not really sure where to go next. I'll sleep on it for now, and if anyone has any suggestions for improvements, I'd be happy to hear them. Also, the title is temporary, I just named it the first thing that came to mind. :v:
Man, being feedback nazi is a tough gig. If you guys could please remember to give someone else some feedback when posting your stuff that would be really great.
i'd give more feedback in here but i don't feel comfortable criticising anything that i don't make (similar stuff to) myself :v:
You don't necessarily have to give criticism, even just a sentence or two with what you like (or don't like) about a song is good, too.
You can even pick a song from a page ago if you think you've found a song that you have something to say about. The whole point is just that this thread has a pretty bad ratio of songs posted to response given, and just asking everyone who posts a song to do a bit of response is all we can really do.
next time I'm in here with audio I'll try to remember to drop a few comments here and there c:
It would probably help if the title said something about giving feedback.

as a level theme this is nice, i can totally see it being the background music of a jungle level in a retro game or something.
your mix is awful though, its like a big nasty puddle. just be a little more liberal with your EQ'ing and it will sound much much better.

This sounds like it's straight out of a late 90's or early 2000's FPS, in a good way.

Oh wow, is it really that bad? I actually don't have any EQ or any effects at all with this outside of the drum samples, didn't seem right to bring them in when I'm emulating the Genesis' sound. Though listening to it again, I should probably see about getting the bass to sit a bit better with the rest of the song, at the very least.

Rediscover speaks the truth....artistic expression whether through arrangement or composition is a completely different aspect to producing. Your "production" skills will bring your artistry to life. Learn it.
(EQ,Compression,Limiting,etc)

It makes a sarcastic comment I'm pretty sure it carries the spirit of what we're trying to avoid

this is so tight. good job man. did you record each track soloed or on top of the other tracks?
just recorded the guitar and bass for this. trying to make a sampled feel without sampling

After many years of Electronic I started this piece and found myself flowing with it.Although I have not done a Trance track in over 10 years, this was the turnout.
Any advice on the production end or even on the composition end would be appreciated.
