All you guys are so good. [editline]14th May 2014[/editline] Where do you guys usually start? My lack of any ideas is not doing good for my anxiety
Posting this again lol.
This is so odd and dissonant, I love it. Good soundscapes.
Okay I'm going to post some of my bossa nova and chillout stuff from the archives
I like the second. I was waiting for the drums to come out from the high pass filter though. They sound good, it would have been nice to hear them fully. The drums in the other two are kind of plain for my taste (although you might have made them that way on purpose), but that's really the only thing I disliked about them. Guitars sounded nice though, especially in the first two. That distant, reverberant sound adds a nice atmosphere to them.
Okay I'm going to post some of my bossa nova and chillout stuff from the archives
those are pretty chill they would sound more bossa nova if you added some harmonic variation through diminished chords and stuff but that might kill the chillout aspect of it so i dunno now, this song i started writing ages ago and have never really finished it seems like uploading it to soundcloud screwed up the levels on the vocals somehow but that might just be my imagination i am pretty fucking tired
Testing some audio design stuff. Learning automation in protools and playing with sine waves and bit crushing netted me this
really cool man. i love getting weird results when I mess with fx chains and waveforms and stuff like that. wish i had more knowledge to get sounds that i have in my head though, that would make things a lot easier might post something later, i've been working on this dubstep track for the longest time and i finally got some really nice basses going. inspiring stuff

You're going to want Windows or a Mac. Linux is NOT an option for audio design. There is literally zero support for linux on all major daws and plug-ins. [editline]15th May 2014[/editline] Want to get some publicity, so I'm going to post everything I've got. Forgive me Would love to have some critique on most if not all of these, especially the electronic ones since I want to get more into that genre. If you have time, I'd love for you to critique my orchestral ones :) Electronic (from Newest to Oldest, Party and Praise and Fallen are my only two originals): Orchestral (All written by me. (1st track) Man that is some turbo shit there, the first track got my head knocking. Would sound coolin a retro game. I think the piano should be spread out a bit more. I'd maybe use some different HH's , not sure. I think in most of your tracks the percussion is a bit too quiet as well. Other than that sounds pretty cool. Here is some stuff I've started: https://soundcloud.com/shabcos/savour2/s-Rqlq8 I can't help making depressing bass lines, help. https://soundcloud.com/shabcos/space/s-PuMze < jamiroquai inspired I dunno if its good or anything. Thank you.
First two tracks are from Sonic CD. Look them up. And thanks, I'll play with the percussion a bit more.
Excellent job on keeping up the feedback guys, we've done well today :)

Just be careful, it gets very repetitive. Set the main theme, transition, variation of main theme 1, transition, variation 2. The transitions don't even have to be that long, just enough that I notice something is about to change.

Although these are kinda concepts, I'm just not sure if I should continue them. Thanks again.

The electronic ones have great riffs and good instrument choice, but I felt the mixes let them down a little. The first one has the best mix in my opinion, with the second one needing the most attention. The main issues in my eyes were the drums being too quiet/drowned out, and the kind of muddy, non-crisp feel they gave off. I think some more EQ'ing is in order to get them sounding perfect, but it's an awesome base! I've just loaded all my software (and new stuff) onto my new pc, so I'm working on a new song: EDIT: Just noticed I some how had overdrive on the master :v: re-uploading EDIT2: done

Just wondering if anyone here has experience with chip trackers/chiptune trackers I recently contacted an indie game dev, asking if I could compose for a project of his. He replied saying that they could use three ambient tracks and one for a boss fight. I've gotten used to the note input for MilkyTracker, but I looking for anyone with more experience to guide me through some waveforms (especially bass drum/snare drum/percussion in general) and effects. Also need some advice for chiptune ambient... I'm not too sure how to approach that
What this guy said Also ditch milky, its a bit outdated now, imo you'd be better off with OpenMPT. Also make sure you're working with .IT rather than any of the other formats, .XM doesn't have the same kind of control that .IT does, and .MOD has that stupid thing with the way the channels work in that two are panned left and two are panned right. I can't talk for .S3M because I've never used it, but yeah. Also the best thing you can do to learn how to do ambient chip is to listen, check out _zebra's kyoufushou selections, have a look at his tracks, take them apart and take inspiration in it. Try and see if you can get the guy to send you some examples of stuff that he likes, and work off of that. [editline]shit[/editline] 90% of .IT files sound like death in milky btw, I tried playing some of my own stuff in it and it is painful.
I am late as fuck to the party but oh well. Wall of text incomming. When you pick up a tracker, the efficiency of the interface and workflow should always be the top things to look for. There's no point going for a tracker with a flashy interface if it's a pain to navigate and stops you constantly while you're in the process of putting your ideas down. Milkytracker is modeled after Fastracker (xm) which is one of the most infamous trackers in the scene, both for its flow, speed and notoriety. It's a good starting ground for beginners because (iirc) it comes built in with waveform generators, so you don't have to go tear apart a bunch of songs just to get stuff to use. Schism Tracker, which is a clone of the classic Impulse Tracker, has a really good flow to it too, and a very finger-touch focus, taking the mouse almost entirely out of the equation. The .xm format is limited in comparison to .it or .xrns, but you can achieve amazing sounds with it. More options =/= better. Back in the days of the original Soundtracker, people were limited to only 4 channels, 2 panned left and 2 panned right, volume and effect commands together in the same line etc., but people worked around that. It's the same as people who are stuck with the soundchips for the NES or even ZX Spectrum, where these limitations became a challenge; how much complexity could you fit into what you've been given. It creates great things, leads to innovation, and makes you a great musician who can think yourself out of any problem, and that knowledge can be used for even more complex things where you're given more freedom. Percussion is hard to come by if you're wanting to use a song commercially. If you're just doing tracking as a hobby you can sample from anywhere. Open up songs that you think have great drums and snares and rip the fuckers out, downsample a little, cut up the waveform and give it a little tlc. The great thing about module files is anyone can open them up and look at what they did, how they did it and what samples they used. Nobody cares if you use their samples so long as you put a little note in your module. Half the fun is sharing what you have and know with others. For trackers, there's a lot of choices. Modern trackers include Renoise, OpenMPT/Modplug, Psycle, SunVox and a few others I'm probably forgetting. Old-school style trackers would be Milkytracker, Schism Tracker, Skale (rip) off the top of my head. There's also trackers for specific sounds. Famitracker for the NES, GoatTracker for SID, LSDJ for Gameboy etc. Don't be daunted. Think of it more as a smorgish board, where you can try what you want and stick with what you like. And don't forget the handbook: http://resources.openmpt.org/tracker_handbook/handbook.htm Sorry for the eyesore post. Hope someone reads it anyway. I'll let you get back to posting. :v:

The orchestral tracks suffer from kinda bad sounds but I can imagine them being pretty decent with good samples. [editline]17th May 2014[/editline] I'll probably look into other stuff on this page later, for now have this: Threw this together today. I just kinda went mad on two bastion tracks lol
I decided to download a few sample packs online and try composing another simple hip-hop beat. What do you guys think?

Thanks chaz!
Why disagree with them? Try reading the first post.
I doubt my feedback will be of any use, I don't know jack shit about music. You won't get anything more useful than "That sounds good" or "I don't like that" from me, so why bother? I just posted something I came up with and wanted to know opinions of people other than my friends.

Like "i like the drums they are very punchy" or "get rid of the high synth it annoys me" or whatever. Even saying that you like it in general (maybe you can add that you like it because its soothing or gets your blood pumping etc) is better than nothing

but for realzies, those are kind of the rules. The bells are good, but it feels kind of empty, imo the snare should have come in around 0:11 when the bass started. I'm not a massive fan of the snare sample. I think the lead (im bad at musical terms) would be better as a different instrument, although it has this eerie feel that goes with the rest of the track, something about it seems a bit off if you get me. Anyway, just find something you can post feedback on, surely there is at least one track on this page that you've listened to and gone "Damn, that's a nice use of X" or "That Y was a bit jank"
I decided to download a few sample packs online and try composing another simple hip-hop beat. What do you guys think?
Reminds me of my beats when I started out. Not much I can say really, I can see (hear) that you're just starting out. Look into learning some tools like eq and compressors and keep at it. (there actually is great tutorials for these but I cba to find them now) The best way to learn the basics is to make tracks and try everything, tweak every knob in every plugin and see what happens!
I doubt my feedback will be of any use, I don't know jack shit about music. I just posted something I came up with and wanted to know opinions of people other than my friends.
Okay, what we're trying to do here is a give-and-then-take. People are busy, attention spans are short- with so much out there on the internet to occupy a persons' time, it takes a surprising amount of effort to slow down for a couple of minutes and focus on something someone else has made. The thing is, no matter how you word it, you're asking for people to take a chunk of time out of their day and devote it, even if only briefly, to you and your work. Don't you agree that it's fair to do the same to them first? And frankly, while tempting, I don't think that comments like absalone111s' are very helpful. I do want everyone to contribute equally, but I also want this thread to be a friendly and welcoming place. As for the feedback, if you actually take some time to listen to a few other songs, I think most people will find it's actually quite easy to come up with something to say. And no, you absolutely do not have to be an expert on music production. That's the great thing about music- it's universal- so even a laymans' opinion on a song is a valid one, because 99% of the time, music is meant to be enjoyed by anyone and everyone.
I can see what you mean, I'll be fair.

I liked these two tracks in particular, Fallen has this mysterious tune that sounds like something out of the Half-Life 2 soundtrack. The use of the organ in Party and Praise was good, kudos to you for being able to make it sound nice when played so quickly. The trumpets also spiced up the tune a little.
Thank you! We really appreciate it.
