For mastering what progress do you follow? Do you export on wav every channel and then mix it all together?
When you master, you put the finishing touches on the master track, hence the name "mastering". Personally I'd say never do the mastering yourself, because you yourself have listened to the track itself to death when you're mixing, and you'll always know what sounds how and why. A second opinion, the mastering engineer is what makes mastering such an important step, this is when your track either makes it or breaks it. I don't agree at all that mastering is any less harder than mixing, there's a reason why there are fewer people mastering tracks rather than mixing and that is because to become a good mastering engineer you're going to have to done it for a long time AND know what makes a track sound as it does, when you master a track you're given a few tracks by your client (most of the time, different people work differently) with a certain sound they want, you then analyze those tracks and find a common denominator, such as perhaps a solid bass or crisp high, and work on the master track to attain that.
So I was messing about with the guitar synths in fl studio http://puu.sh/8WKR6.mp3 does anyone think i could get away with using this for a a fuzz/stoner metal song?
Too distorted, it doesn't even sound like a guitar to me.
Piano sounds fake, that's literally the only problem with this. Very nice job overall. I'd like to know how you did this.
Thanks man! I've done it all with kontakt, listened to a piano cover of the track a hundred times trying to get all the notes right and then I started adding other elements such as violins, cello, flute, piccolo, trombones, trumpets, and timpanis. :)
Yeah that sounds like an actual instrument. It'll probably sit just fine in a mix, but beware you'll never get away with VST or Synths for actual guitars (not bass).
Putting virtual amp on real guitars is hard enough, I doubt it's even possible with synthed ones.
Pretty cool. And I agree with Adeptus, the kick sounds underwhelming in the final area. I really liked the drums, but I felt like the strings/instruments yearned for chord progression. Dancy experimental stuff w/samples and what-not. Ambient fun
first track was hype as fuck. i could totally hear it in a techno dancehall club scene. the lead is very interesting. how did you manipulate the sound so well? the second needed more drums during the break imo, kinda like an r2dj feel. recorded bass and remastered an old track. looking for a sound to make it more funky. like a little sample or some synth or organ or something.

I'd say to add an organ, copy the bass part tweak it a bit so it's more of an accompaniment, move it up one octave, and choose a good organ.
Ambient fun
Its a very ambient track I'll give you that. The transition at 0:51 is well done. The whole tone of the piece is very detached, very atmospheric. It has a very dark, gritty feel. I really like the guitar sound and the whole blues sort of feel that the song has. As for sounds that you could potentially use to make it sound funky, check out a zurna. It sounds like a kuzoo or something and might be something that might work. So I just got this thing done. I really wish I had my old set up back because recording with my iPhone makes it all sound muddled and I can't do any mastering and mixing. Anyway I based this piece off of what you'd expect from a bike ride in the fall time, with the leaves flying past you as you zip through the sidewalk as the leaves tumble before you in a myriad of golds and reds. Hope its decent.

I think it'd sound amazing with some real strings though! Did you compose this with midi? If so I'd love to put some of my sounds on it for you. I'm actually testing out some string patches now. Otherwise I think you've got a really nice piece. I don't know if some of those old folk song melodies you threw in was intentional or not. This piece reminded me about going around nature with someone I loved. Very good job pulling that emotion from me. Keep it up!

Once I get my ProTools 8 disk back from my friend I would love to try out your strings!

Badger, if you get a chance to post some examples of convincing sampled guitars I'd love to take a listen. In my experience there aren't any at all, so I'd love to see what's out there.

Don't bother with the bass unless you must, I'm a believer in convincing VST bass well enough. Guitars, though, in my experience, don't have the ability to produce good palm mutes, tones, hell, even the most basic of notes generally just sound beyond fake. Acoustic guitar is a bit better off, but I'll be damned the day I'm fooled for a moment by VST guitars, especially with distortion.
Judge for yourself. I think it's decent sounding though I agree that nothing digital can beat a real electric.
Well, it doesn't sound 'bad', but it doesn't sound much like a [real] guitar either. I don't want to sound elitist or snobby, but as always the palm muting sounds terrible even with just single notes. It almost passes muster on some of the higher notes. But where it really falls apart is 0:50. The worst part of VST guitar is the chords. I don't know the science of it, probably something to do with how pickups transmit the frequencies of multiple notes and blends them together, but a guitar VST is at its weakest when you put two or more strings through it at a time. Anyways, in general it's just the nuance. VSTs, for the foreseeable future, can't replicate the intricacies of guitar. The strings buzzing, the scratch/squeal when sliding between notes on the fretboard, the plucking sound of a muted string or chord, it's all missing. What you're left with is a cheesy vibe. Even the most simplistic, babied of parts struggles to hold up. I should note hear that, besides perhaps pianos, I know VSTs are rarely able to perfectly replicate any instrument. I don't know if it's just due to my experience with guitar that I'm more picky with them, but either way I want to make sure I'm clear that few, if any, VSTs are perfect. BUT- that's not to say VST guitars are a bad thing. While ideally they'd only be used for previsualization when planning out and drafting songs, later to be recorded with real instruments, they do still work when you're in a hurry or simply don't have the means to get real guitar tracks laid down. Anyways, thanks for trying Badger. Hopefully you haven't taken my tirade personally. It's still quite a cool piece for just coming up within an hour.
That is supremely sick. I love the beat. How did you do it? Listen to Soundcloud recording http://soundcloud.com/corn-mouth/reversed-reflection-with-strings-wip I decided to add some string instruments as well as various production tweaks. I would really appreciate some feedback on it. Especially regarding the last min. (I tried to make it sound super chaotic!)
I am a big fan of dnb/breakcore, and it seemed like a gentle combination of them both. If there's something needs emphasizing is the beat, I'd make it a bit more powerful, because now it feels like the melody is taking over the beat, and usually, you need the opposite  Overall good job! Now for me Basically, I usually make noisy metal, but here's my first step at chilling the fuck down. hope you like it.

This last month or two we've been asking everyone who posts a song to pick someone else's work and give a comment and/or some feedback on it first. If you'd pick one or a few songs from the last page or two and either edit your post or make a new one with some feedback, that would be really great of you. Thanks :) [editline]23rd May 2014[/editline]
To prove a point about VST's, take a listen to this
Ah, I should have said this were I not rambling so horribly. I actually think Orchestral VSTs are fine in the right hands. To me Orchestral VSTs are a lot more detailed and offer more serious features (modulation, precision, voicing, etc) because it's much harder for professionals to get their hands on an entire orchestra than a decent guitarist, so of course the market for Orchestra VST is much larger. Anyways, my vendetta is almost solely against guitars. While other instruments aren't perfect, they're definitely miles ahead, and, especially when used so gracefully in such a well written, complex piece as you've just posted, are perfectly sufficient.
Judge for yourself. I think it's decent sounding though I agree that nothing digital can beat a real electric.
If there was a form of synth guitar that could incorporate simulated hammer-ons, pull-offs and the like that would probably enhance single-note melodies, as for chords I have no idea. For this, I'd recommend dicking around with velocity to humanize it a little, but I don't think there's any way to get close to a real electric other than a real electric with a mic or an interface in the forseeable future. I can see that sounding pretty neat with a real electric line, however. The higher pitched guitar melody doesn't sound so real, but the chords underneath it sound fairly realistic. The part where the bass cuts out & fades back in, and you can hear that stretched out snare, then those vocals come in, that was sick.
