imma just up and say it, i love reading this thread specifically for the overall feedback as of late and i'd like to thank each and every one of you for making continuous effort for keeping it going even when it's not targeted at the stuff I post, the feedback in general helps to keep me learning new things and applying new techniques, ideas, etc etc
It's good because I actually want to post here now
this thread made me get back into making music - creative music thread 2014 confessionals
this thread got me mildly addicted to downtempo here's another beat

We've been asking that everyone who posts their own work first gives feedback/comment for someone else's song first. If you could edit or make a new post with some feedback, we'd really appreciate it. And ahem...as a side note to regulars, it's been discussed before, but, at risk of reaching my feedback nazi final form, consider shunning posts that haven't posted feedback or asking them to post feedback before giving them feedback. I don't really know how strongly everyone feels about this, maybe it's a big mistake to ask that, but I think it would go along way if everyone got behind it. [editline]28th May 2014[/editline] Haha, oh man, you beat me to it absolalone. Thanks a million for helping the cause ;)
I've been having some trouble coming up with a good chord progression for a 3/4 waltz track ive been wanting to do. Im trying to do something thats similar to the low alternating chords on Dmitri Shostakovich's second waltz but I cant think of any. I can't remember exactly how to read sheet music anymore, but if you can, just look at what notes were used from that. If you can't read sheet music, you could try using a program to read the notes, like the "Pitcher" plugin from FL Studio (10+), for example. I use that a lot while working with samples that need adjusting. Pitcher sometimes has a hard time detecting the exact notes used in chords, but it still helps since it might show one of the notes being played or bounce between two notes being used. It fucks up a lot with percussion in the background too, so if you plan on using it to figure out the scale, you're probably better off downloading a recording of somebody playing the song on piano from youtube, to play through Pitcher.

For those without guitars, a midi keyboard or even just an on-screen keyboard might do the trick as well. Either way I find it's easier to do it by ear than mess around with sheet music or tuners/readers.

Ill see what I can do. In the meantime Im gonna fuck around on the Cello but I doubt ill get anywhere. I have so much trouble just making something simple. I keep drawing blanks and its really depressing. I just want to make something simple like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATVCiwoPars And I get nothing. I have no creative outlet and it hurts.
The more you try to make your ideas, the easier it gets. It just takes a lot of time & practice. I used to try to bite Datsik's old style before I came up with my own, and before I really even knew what I was doing. His bass sounds back then were complex, and nobody else really sounded like him, so there was no tutorials or anything on how to make Datsik's bass. So I kept trying to do it, and got closer & closer, until my shit actually sounded like his, and I got better at making sounds overall in the process. Now that I already have my own style, I can usually just make sounds off the top of my head without it being a pain in the ass.
I don't want to sound elitist here, but if you're really interested in creating, try to see if you can get your hands on a second-hand Harmony Textbook (by Walter Piston, third edition is fine) for a cheap price (less than 20$ or 30$). It assumes that you know how to read sheet music in at least treble and bass clefs, though it does use others (pretty much only in examples and orchestral scores). I do realize that it's a university-level textbook (~150$ if you buy it new), but it contains a plethora of very useful stuff if you intend to get into deeper details. A lot of the important stuff that I recommend that is in the book are bass progressions, 6 and 6-4 chords (pretty much first and second inversion, but the book goes into detail on how each of the sound)> If you aren't really into that stuff, well, here's the advice I can give you: Try sitting at a keyboard. Imo it really helps you find what notes you want to try and you can test them instantly by hitting them. Once you found a chord you like, write it down and go to the next one. The thing about pianos is that they let you instantly test chords and you can see what they're going to sound like much easier than having to read notation. Simply changing one note is easier because the piano synthesizes the sound for you; you don't have to do it yourself in your head. Btw, feel free to experiment with crazy dissonances (not just seconds and sevenths). Like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvZjZrnOvds It gets fast and very dissonant and interesting at around 4:50, but it definitely goes back to having a melody by 5:50, and again at 7:22. Other people who have experimented with tonality, perhaps not to a dissonant extent to Shostakovich (or stravinsky in Rite of Spring), could be Gustav Holst in the Planets (Mars and Jupiter springs to mind). Stravinsky also has some quite tonal stuff in the Firebird Suite (Infernal dance, for one). Also, I recommend watching some of Smalin/Musanim's videos on youtube. The newer videos with color-coded notes can help you in your journey.

Or do what I do -- I just screw around in Logic all the time, not really sure what I'm going to create, but hey, something usually comes out. One of the first songs I wrote, I was just messing around. I posted it to the internet and got tons of compliments on my chord progressions. And you know what I did? I used all natural notes. Seriously. So, just play around, don't set a goal for yourself just yet. :)
Well thanks for clearing that up
Did you not see that massive title you clicked on before posting your track?
Let's not go backwards here guys
Did you not see that massive title you clicked on before posting your track?
This is pretty tall coming from someone who've posted a lot of his own music without giving the proper feedback. Drop of the high horse and be nice, it works I promise!
lol I did it once and apologized in like 3 different posts after
I think the snare could do with some clarity, drop of the lower frequencies near 200-500hz and it should get a bit brighter. I love the distorted bass, I actually think this could get some clarity as well if you took it down a notch near 100-200, the arpeggiosynth does a good job of having those lower frequencies and it should clear up the mix if the snare and aggressive distorted bass gets that cut in the lower frequencies. I like the glitchy synth that comes in later, I think you could definietly have that one take up the higher frequencies, around 3-4khz? An autopan on the hihat could be cool too I think, maybe have it do a quick sweep left>right the whole time to make it trippy. I made a track that I am insanely proud of, it is a really long one as well (which I've never done before) but that I think is dynamic enough for it to work. Here I've really worked with panning as well, guitar is essentially in the right channel the whole way through, with acoustic drums on the left, bass is panned a bit left as well with an organ in the middle and bongo/yembe/egg/tambourine going back and forth the whole song through. I'd love to hear what you all guys think about it. :) A few select moments where it changes intensity; 1:42 (Solo time, both bass and guitar) 3:12 (more laid-back, guitar solo here as well) 4:08 (time for a bass solo again) 4:36 (building up) 5:24 (back into laid-back territory, very percussive with acoustic drums) 7:16 (the lowest point of the song, very scaled back and almost dreamy) 7:41 (last guitar solo) 9:52 (kicking back into high intensity, ending) If you just want to check out a single part if you're digging the groove. :)
lol I did it once and apologized in like 3 different posts after
Dude until we started to enforce this rule you barely posted feedback ever so like dont be an asshole about it hey
it really spoils the taste of your music as well (being an asshole that is)
Been a few days since I last posted. I have a original composition I was working on today: Pretty much about a girl I haven't spoken to in awhile yet I cannot get her out of my head. I plan on expanding it a bit so this isn't the final version. Enjoy. [editline]28th May 2014[/editline] Before anyone asks: Cinestrings
