Decided to do something a bit different (louder) with my dark ambient stuff.

I love ambient of all kinds, be it dark, light, drone, what have you. This is well done! I wrote a drone / dark ambient track way back when, but I don't have it up on SoundCloud anymore.
also early wip, still working on the transitions, keeping the semi orchestral style I went to with my other unfinished tracks.

I dig the vibe you're going with here! Hope you finish this.

And I recently finished this track.

I'm so glad I already follow you on SoundCloud. These are sounding mean as fuck my dude!

This track is honestly a pride and joy of mine, and my first proper footwork track. It's doing well so far (most listens on a song I've uploaded to date too!) and I'd appreciate a listen, a comment; hell a like if it tickles your fancy too! (And if you're interested in remixing it, I'd be more than happy to send you the stems! If it's good enough, I'll put it on the EP I'm releasing in July/August - free, of course. Other artists have already done remixes of it as well - see links tagged for examples.)
Can't guarantee constructive criticisms will do much to change it (it's essentially in its final variation as is, maybe changing the kick is as far as reworking it will go) but I'll take what people can throw at me.

hey man thread rules you have to give feedback if you post a song
I don't think it was that rude lol
There was probably a better way to word it, but don't tell me you don't agree that you'd be frustrated if you've spent months patiently reminding user after user, many of whom already know better, to follow the rules, dozens and dozens of times,
and then some smartass has to try to make me look like an asshole and has to post a stupid fucking smiley (and don't even pretend that's not the "rofl you're a moron" smiley) and it's all I've got to keep a friendly face on
I really appreciate all the support everyone's been giving me but I don't think I'd make a good moderator, I've been working so much that I literally wake up at 4:30AM, eat shower, go to work until 3:00PM, eat again and take a nap for about an hour, go to work from 5:00PM to 10:30PM, and then eat again and go to sleep. I've never been more depressed or angry and I barely have time to check the thread once or twice a day, let alone make or even play music.
Sorry for QQing super hard on you guys for what amounts to basically nothing, but I'm seriously about to snap and start just berating everyone, if this doesn't count as me losing my marbles already.
Anyways yeah I love you guys but I'm kinda just freaking out and loosing my cool, etc sorry
(and don't even pretend that's not the "rofl you're a moron" smiley)
i always saw :v: as the 'i'm being a smartass'/'cheeky' smiley, not the "rofl you're a moron" one
And frankly that's almost just as bad because that implies he would have known he was being a smartass. Either way, my truck broke down and I had to steal my moms car to get to work today, which meant that I was late enough that I got sent home, and I ain't even mad. Second job will likely be cancelled due to weather so I now have an entire day to just unwind and chill out. Feels good.
Again sorry for the pity party but I totally needed to vent. May the musics resume, and thanks to all of you regulars for behaving so well when I'm not around <3

Dude, if you have to go on some drama party like this then maybe you should just stop visiting the forums for a while and not take everything personally and analyze it this hard, when you're having a rough time try and relax and google cute dog puppies, like this
I really dig the main melody. So quiet. I think a little more cutoff on the high frequencies in the kick/bass could work. Also, I think the transition at 1:06 is a bit off place. Something sounds off. Apart from that, the melody itself is great.

That's where I strive at. I currently can't eliminate the blurriness of any of my tracks. It sounds cheapish because, sadly, I don't know how to mix. And I use Sylenth for everything as I can't afford neither Massive nor Nexus.
[editline]19th June 2014[/editline]
any advice?

[editline]19th June 2014[/editline]

Well you're in luck cos massive and nexus are probably the most overrated and worst plugins (for chords at leasts) you can find on the market.
Sylenth1 is your ideal synth, as I've mentioned to several users here, it's not about the tools you have, it's about YOU and your SKILL. Practise, learn, practise more, learn, work, repeat. Never stop this process
When you mix, you've got to think of each and every instrument as a building block. Where does it fit, how big is it?
Each and every instrument has a frequency spectrum (bass, low mid, high mid, treble) it dominates, when you mix, do you try and decide where it fits the best?
Lets say you have a bass synth, a kick drum, a snare drum, some cymbals, and a piano that plays both chords and melody.
Now, you have to decide which instrument will dominate the bass registry, both the higher and lower end of it. Will it be the bass, or the kick? The snare probably got some undertones as well. The piano chords, are they going to take up some of that bass as well? There are many decisions you have to make when you mix. It's almost like arranging, except all the raw materials are there. Now you just need to place it all so that it stays up and forms that house you're thinking of.
Now, lets say you decide that the bass synth is going to be the lower end of bass, and chords should have the higher end. That means you're going to have to make sure every other instrument doesn't take up unnecessary place in that frequency, so you cut down on bass frequencies on them all.
Whenever you mix, you're making conscious decisions on how everything is going to sound (obviously) and also what you're looking for in that particular arrangement. If you let too many things have the bassy sound, the song is going to sound well, bass-heavy, which means it will lose clarity and just sound bad. The same happens if you decide that every instrument needs to have that mid range sound, the song itself will just sound closed in and tinny.
You could always write down and draw where you think every instrument should be and also where it sounds best. Bass instruments like say cello obviously sound better when the bass frequencies are put in the spotlight, whereas a violin might sound bad if you decide to do the same.

That's what I usually dom but I never give it enough time. Rework in progress, it seems!
For the master channel, would it be using the Maximus plugin a good idea?
I've no idea what does, never do shit on the master channel until you've mixed all the other tracks though.
I've no idea what does, never do shit on the master channel until you've mixed all the other tracks though.
Not necessarily true, I have a pre master chain I have set up for every time I produce, just to ensure everything still sounds the way I want it to post-mastering. (It's a chain I made my self)
[editline]20th June 2014[/editline]
Just go with what sounds good to you I guess
Putting stuff on your master is kind of a lazy way to mix. You won't notice things like clipping because you're smashing shit into a limiter/compressor. Also, good luck exporting stems and keeping the mix intact if you/someone ever wants to remix your track.
That said, I sometimes intentionally clip my master, since Renoise has an inbuilt soft-clipper on the master channel which I like the sound of when you clip just a little.
So yes, whatever works/sounds good :v:

Well that shouldn't be a problem, and won't be as long as stuff isn't redlining before the master?
I guess it doesn't..? I'm not too sure really. But the problem of your mix falling apart when bouncing stems remains nonetheless.

Just turn off the effects when bouncing then...
That's what I mean, then you lose your mix, because you had effects on your master.
That's what I mean, then you lose your mix, because you had effects on your master.
What are you referring to? Stems for people to be remixing or stems to reduce CPU usage, in which case both still makes sense in my post

He means like if you're bouncing individual stems for each channel, the effect you had on your master will be lost, as you're rendering each stem before it goes to the master channel

You won't end up with the exact same mix when bouncing stems.
If you leave the plugins on your master enabled and then bounce stems, it can (and probably will) give you a different sounding mix when you put the stems all back together in a fresh project. Because rather than say, the mids of your drums and vocals being compressed together in a multiband on your master, they'll be going to the master individually when bouncing the stems.
And if you disable the plugins you had on your master... well you'll obviously have a different sounding mix.

- Soul/Funk albums (for EZ chill vibes)
- Chop these up
- Chop up some breakbeats
- Sidechain Compression
- ????
- Profit

I don't know about others, but in FL when you bounce stems using the export as stems option, it still sounds as it would in the mix. When you mute other channels, just because their audible audio isn't coming out of your DAW, the information is still going into the master, so compressors/limiters are still coming into effect.

Sick dude! Really liked the organ. The only thing that I have to say is that some of the sections felt like they dragged on. Some were a bit too repetitious. Even you don't want to change them, just adding a new instrument or sound can do wonders.

That was a fun listen! I think one thing you might want to consider working on is keeping variety in your piece. As I was listening I found you stuck with the same progression the entire time. Perhaps try working on coming up with more sections with different chord progressions to keep the listener engaged.

Well I've been hard at work to finish the piece I posted almost a week ago. I've put tons of hours in it so far and plan on seeing where I can take it. Although I'm not done, I feel this piece is coming along quite nicely. I hope I can get it done in time for the Facepunch Collab album!
