Well I've been hard at work to finish the piece I posted almost a week ago. I've put tons of hours in it so far and plan on seeing where I can take it. Although I'm not done, I feel this piece is coming along quite nicely. I hope I can get it done in time for the Facepunch Collab album! Into The Gates "Preview 2" -
Sounds like half the instruments are panned 100% to the left, that really bothers me. Other than that, everything sounds good though.
Here is a tune I started and finished overnight. The result of 3 months of extreme writers block.
There's some nasty clipping around 0:50 and 2:50.
also heres this thing i made last night at like 5am
Oh shit yeah, I love that intro. This is as smooth as the very smoothest of things that are often used as a relative measurement and means of comparison for smoothness. I really hope you plan on expanding this. This one of those tracks where it might go really well with some cheesy-ass raindrop ambience and city noise.
Here is a tune I started and finished overnight. The result of 3 months of extreme writers block.
The intro comes on really strong, but the repetition of it doesn't have enough build to sustain that many passes/progressions. I'd personally have put in another instrument alongside it early on to keep the build sharper. That "wah" EQ shifting at :40-:60 blows me out of the water though, that really works and I might even recommend trying to avoid using it up until that point to really bring it out when it comes in instead of using some less-exciting shifts as a build to that moment. I'd also say that maybe you could find something more intense/rough for your main "wah/wub" synth from 1:12 onwards. It doesn't need to be louder, but a little more edge to it could really add to the intensity. The drop at 1:33 is excellent. At the slide (or slowdown/reverse drop thing) at 2:18, and this is completely personal preference, I would have had the last beat before it picks be the lead synth doing an abrupt on off stutter as 16th notes, like a really fast "d-d-d-d-" before it kicks back in. I dunno, I'm not saying t's necessarily a good idea haha. Overall it could use just a bit more but it is really pretty fantastic.
Into The Gates "Preview 2" -
Not my cup of tea to be sure, but the quality of the instruments is excellent. I don't have much to say about it since you clearly know what you're doing, but I can definitely see you having a future in film scoring. Bravo! --also I fucking love seeing these massive comment quote chains, you guys are seriously making this thread an incredible place to be-- And for my thing, I swear I did this all sober but I do believe I'm going more insane by the day. secret linked because, while fucking hilarious, my voice is still embarrassing to me even just as a joke https://soundcloud.com/logan-mcdaniel/duchamk1sampleplus2/s-fnxy3
Sick dude! Really liked the organ. The only thing that I have to say is that some of the sections felt like they dragged on. Some were a bit too repetitious. Even you don't want to change them, just adding a new instrument or sound can do wonders.
could you name the sections you find repetitive, because personally i don't really find any parts repetitive so that'd help
https://soundcloud.com/flowstalgia/backthoughts Trance track I made a while back for my little album. I try to keep my trance shorter than most of the stuff out there so it doesn't get repetitive. It took me forever to get the snare to come through the rest of the beat without sounding distorted and weird. I've gotten a lot better at mixing over the past couple of years. Been messing around in FL Studio for nearly 10 years now though...I should honestly be a lot better than this. P.S. What are the tags used for Soundcloud now? I tried the media tags, but they don't seem to work. How do I Facepunch these days? Been at least a year since I last posted.
Sounds like half the instruments are panned 100% to the left, that really bothers me. Other than that, everything sounds good though.
I'll check it out, but I'm pretty sure nothing is panned. It sounds centered on my speakers. Maybe there is something wrong on your end.
could you name the sections you find repetitive, because personally i don't really find any parts repetitive so that'd help
Roughly 3:20 - 4:45. You repeated that part six times. Since it is just loudness I have hard time hearing if you added more instruments in, but to be honest that doesn't even matter in this case. I've been taught that if you repeat something more that four times it can really turn off the listener. Four to two times is the ideal amount of time you want to repeat any given section or the listener catches on. Same goes for 8:16 - 9:58, although this section is slightly different you repeat way too many times. Disclaimer - Of course every artist is different, this is just what I've been taught by various teachers.

I actually enjoyed them on this track. I really dig the song and I wish you would release some full length stuff or record an entire album. Because the stuff you make is very good. I wouldn't be embarrassed about your voice, just try to improve it. Most rock singers aren't conventionally good anyway/ I'm sorry I'll try to give more feedback as more people post. This is a song that's unfinished but I'd rather know if its absolute shit now before continuing it. I decided to venture into more traditional songwriting this time. For this song I would want to find a vocalist to sing over it. Anything after 1:34 is basically nothing and will be taken out. I've never really used power chords in a song or even distortion based stuff outside of soloing. https://soundcloud.com/blazing234/unfinished For some reason the media tags and everything isn't working, without the s of course.

Thanks to Hakita and killerteacup for helping to moderate. And speedhax, if it's uploaded as a private track you won't be able to media tag it and you'll have to go the the share link on the song and copy the secret link. Although I still see the s in the https.
Into The Gates "Preview 2" -
Like milkbagz said it sounds like there is too much stuff panned to the left, but the composition sounds really nice and it sounds really natural, something I always find really hard to get with sampled strings. __________ A preview for some darker songs I've been working on, i'll probably make an EP
Hello I am new here. I'm an amateur musician and this is some stuff I've been working on for this year. I don't have the best equipment, so a lot of my stuff is very lo-fi. Hobo4President: I was very impressed by your first piece, and wasn't really expecting the style. The second piece, I do not quite get. Was it sort of a calibration of different pieces that you just wanted to sample? Either way, the three pieces themselves are solid. You're a brilliant composer. I am following you on soundcloud. Speedhax It's definitely not shit, and has a lot of potential. Do you sing as well? It's a bit plain near the distorted progression, but I assume it's just because you're not finised with it.
A preview for some darker songs I've been working on, i'll probably make an EP
That third track is so sick, the 808 snare and the higher-pitched wobble sound kind of killed it for me though. There's not really anything wrong with the 808 snare, that's just out of my personal taste I guess - I just think they're overused. I don't think the wobble thing that comes in at 2:11 really fits in though. It just sounds really out of place to me, it might fit in better if you just made it lower and quieter though. Also, the reverb on the hihats in the second track is really nice.
Going to write something today. Rich has inspired me to start an orchestral piece, so we'll see what happens :) Also if your music isn't embedded within facepunch I'm not going to listen to it. Sorry, too lazy to hit links. If you really want me to listen and critique send me a pm and I'll listen to it personally even if it isn't embedded.
I know this'll sound like babbywork next to Rich's stuff but here's something I'm wip-ing on right now:
Wow I really like this. My suggestion would be to maybe bring out the subtle violas and violins more during the beginning. Mid violas and low violins carry a great dark and dramatic sound and deserve more time.
Beautiful stuff man, love the airy chorus pad. It goes great with the piano. Thanks, much appreciated. Here's what I've been working on lately. And I recently finished this track.
I love them both. Both emit a great feel and vibe, especially the first one. The vox later around 1:40 confused me a bit because I didn't know what you were saying. Otherwise fantastic job.
also early wip, still working on the transitions, keeping the semi orchestral style I went to with my other unfinished tracks.
Wow I love this song. Great job. I'd bring out that melody a bit on the bells past :54 but otherwise fantastic. I enjoyed this piece.
Decided to do something a bit different (louder) with my dark ambient stuff.
Really good stuff, I can see this in an action/horror film or game. Mind if I ask how you went about writing this? I definitely want to start doing some ambient stuff.
This track is honestly a pride and joy of mine, and my first proper footwork track. It's doing well so far (most listens on a song I've uploaded to date too!) and I'd appreciate a listen, a comment; hell a like if it tickles your fancy too! (And if you're interested in remixing it, I'd be more than happy to send you the stems! If it's good enough, I'll put it on the EP I'm releasing in July/August - free, of course. Other artists have already done remixes of it as well - see links tagged for examples.) Can't guarantee constructive criticisms will do much to change it (it's essentially in its final variation as is, maybe changing the kick is as far as reworking it will go) but I'll take what people can throw at me.
I understand this is complete. As a final work it's very well done. However I can't help but feel its a tad too repetitive. I got a tad bored too quickly. Keep up the work though. You've obviously got the talent :)
it's been a while but here's a song, made it for the upcoming facepunch collaboration album, noisey doom metal esque stuff
Man there were times in this where the beat was spot on jamming! Great job. It was a tad long so skipped around but the biggest impression was that this is very well done. The mixing was very good and my speakers had a nice time playing it when they should have blown up. Nice job :)
also heres this thing i made last night at like 5am
Very chill and relaxing. In fact it's the main thing I do (believe it or not). I haven't posted or written an orchestra piece in awhile though due to my writers block haha. It's a bit hollow at times. For the most part, the bass has no meat whatsoever and that is a huge problem. I always like to post my main inspiration for orchestral music whenever someone is writing orchestra themselves. Two Steps from Hell and Thomas Bergersen do an amazing job creating modern orchestral pieces and I highly recommend listening to all their music. This song is pretty much a highlight of everything they do. If you have the ten minutes, give it a good listen and try to emulate the techniques they're using (believe it or not this song is using samples too, I believe from the East West catalog which they've worked on themselves). Your composition is good. There's just some mixing problems. Sounds more like an small ensemble than it does a full orchestra. There are also obvious mixing problems. Listen to some Two Steps for some inspiration and keep on writing. You're already doing a fantastic job. I forgot whether I asked but are you scoring it out in sibelius or finale? Or neither? Nice pieces. The only problem I spotted is a common problem every studio recorder has: the vocals are too soft! Unless they are intended to be background vocals, your lead vocals should be ontop of everything else, not mixed into everything else. It's like getting a sundae with the cherry inside the sundae and not on the top. [editline]23rd June 2014[/editline] Also Rich remember: Taiko drums go a long way to adding epicness to your piece... Remember that ;)
I don't know about others, but in FL when you bounce stems using the export as stems option, it still sounds as it would in the mix. When you mute other channels, just because their audible audio isn't coming out of your DAW, the information is still going into the master, so compressors/limiters are still coming into effect.
This is totally false. The audio is what triggers the compression/limiting. If you mute a channel, it is not sending audio to the master, so it won't contribute to any compression or limiting on the master. There is not some second secret channel of inaudible signal that gets sent to your comps/limiters.

The process takes hours because I'm not doing everything in real-time, and I think with a cheap controller with a keyboard or drumpad on it I can just load my samples, hit record, and play. It's also really hard to play the piano on the Macbook keyboard and with only 2 octaves. If it changes anything, I play the piano.

Remember that ;)
Thank you for the helpful feedback, I really really appreciate it! I'm definitely looking into the bass, because you've made me noticed that I haven't handed off the melody to the bass yet and that it was something I was overlooking. Some of the volume issues might be from me using cheapy $30 Walmart speakers that I got from my roommates for Christmas two years ago. My nice headphones fucked up and quit working. I took them apart and was able to solder the broken line, but it didn't get them back into full working order. Bass was screwed up and it only worked on one side. So when I've been working dynamics, I've been basing them off those speakers so I can hear it myself. Thankfully my birthday is Thursday and I've asked for some nice speakers. (I have had too much bad luck with headphones) Speaking of mixing I have some questions. I'm probably not using FL Studios like your suppose to be, but what is the purpose of "pattern" and "song?" I've always written my entire pieces in a single "pattern." Would this help with mixing? Can you point me to some tutorials, etc? I've also always noticed that my pieces do sound like a college ensemble and not a huge studio ensemble. I'm not completely sure how to go about creating this effect. Is this something that can purely solved in mixing? Or is this something that has to deal with me having only the Gold version of my East West packs and not the higher versions that allow for surround/stage reverbs that create space. Anyone can answer if they know. I feel like I'm a very capable composer, but still learning on the whole mixing and mastering game.

You can find a tonne of good ones by looking up old 90's albums on Wikipedia, the classics usually have a section that shows the samples used in each track. Or there's whosampled.com, if you just searched Nujabes on that, you could probably find a lot of what he's used. If you're looking to get better, getting more hardware and plugins won't do that (unless all your plugins are garbage, but considering that you said you have FL, that's surely not the case). If there's something specific you want to learn, you can look it up on Youtube, other than that just keep practicing and making tracks. [editline] asdf [/editline] also read thread rules
