Oh shit yeah, I love that intro. This is as smooth as the very smoothest of things that are often used as a relative measurement and means of comparison for smoothness. I really hope you plan on expanding this. This one of those tracks where it might go really well with some cheesy-ass raindrop ambience and city noise.

The intro comes on really strong, but the repetition of it doesn't have enough build to sustain that many passes/progressions. I'd personally have put in another instrument alongside it early on to keep the build sharper. That "wah" EQ shifting at :40-:60 blows me out of the water though, that really works and I might even recommend trying to avoid using it up until that point to really bring it out when it comes in instead of using some less-exciting shifts as a build to that moment.

I'd also say that maybe you could find something more intense/rough for your main "wah/wub" synth from 1:12 onwards. It doesn't need to be louder, but a little more edge to it could really add to the intensity. The drop at 1:33 is excellent. At the slide (or slowdown/reverse drop thing) at 2:18, and this is completely personal preference, I would have had the last beat before it picks be the lead synth doing an abrupt on off stutter as 16th notes, like a really fast "d-d-d-d-" before it kicks back in. I dunno, I'm not saying t's necessarily a good idea haha.

Overall it could use just a bit more but it is really pretty fantastic.

Trance track I made a while back for my little album. I try to keep my trance shorter than most of the stuff out there so it doesn't get repetitive. It took me forever to get the snare to come through the rest of the beat without sounding distorted and weird. I've gotten a lot better at mixing over the past couple of years. Been messing around in FL Studio for nearly 10 years now though...I should honestly be a lot better than this.

P.S. What are the tags used for Soundcloud now? I tried the media tags, but they don't seem to work. How do I Facepunch these days? Been at least a year since I last posted.

Roughly 3:20 - 4:45. You repeated that part six times. Since it is just loudness I have hard time hearing if you added more instruments in, but to be honest that doesn't even matter in this case. I've been taught that if you repeat something more that four times it can really turn off the listener. Four to two times is the ideal amount of time you want to repeat any given section or the listener catches on. Same goes for 8:16 - 9:58, although this section is slightly different you repeat way too many times.

Disclaimer - Of course every artist is different, this is just what I've been taught by various teachers.

both sections have noise building up slowly, it might not be loud enough to be properly audible though
i've never really been taught by anyone on how to make music so i just go by what i feel
honestly though, listening to them again they might be going on for a bit too long

Your vocals have potential to be good. I actually enjoyed them on this track. I really dig the song and I wish you would release some full length stuff or record an entire album. Because the stuff you make is very good. I wouldn't be embarrassed about your voice, just try to improve it. Most rock singers aren't conventionally good anyway/

This is a song that's unfinished but I'd rather know if its absolute shit now before continuing it. I decided to venture into more traditional songwriting this time. For this song I would want to find a vocalist to sing over it. Anything after 1:34 is basically nothing and will be taken out. I've never really used power chords in a song or even distortion based stuff outside of soloing.

Like milkbagz said it sounds like there is too much stuff panned to the left, but the composition sounds really nice and it sounds really natural, something I always find really hard to get with sampled strings.

That third track is so sick, the 808 snare and the higher-pitched wobble sound kind of killed it for me though. There's not really anything wrong with the 808 snare, that's just out of my personal taste I guess - I just think they're overused. I don't think the wobble thing that comes in at 2:11 really fits in though. It just sounds really out of place to me, it might fit in better if you just made it lower and quieter though.

Also, the reverb on the hihats in the second track is really nice.

Wow I really like this. My suggestion would be to maybe bring out the subtle violas and violins more during the beginning. Mid violas and low violins carry a great dark and dramatic sound and deserve more time.

This is fantastic! Going into 1:12 was sick and the beginning was very well written. I agree with Rich, more chord variety will help. That is also I problem I have in my own writing.

You definitely know what you're doing for the most part! Nice pieces. The only problem I spotted is a common problem every studio recorder has: the vocals are too soft!

Unless they are intended to be background vocals, your lead vocals should be ontop of everything else, not mixed into everything else. It's like getting a sundae with the cherry inside the sundae and not on the top.

This is totally false. The audio is what triggers the compression/limiting. to help yourself get better you need to stop depending on gear, and start straight up practising. You could easily write a full length album of pretty much any genre these days without using anything but a computer and some monitors.

I've just been doing sampling, and I'm looking to create some synth stuff. I've depended on just mixing audio together by arranging clips and using my laptop keyboard as a makeshift drum-machine. The process takes hours because I'm not doing everything in real-time, and I think with a cheap controller with a keyboard or drumpad on it I can just load my samples, hit record, and play.

It's also really hard to play the piano on the Macbook keyboard and with only 2 octaves.

If it changes anything, I play the piano.

If it makes you feel any better all I use is FL and a pair of headphones. I only just bought a midi keyboard a month or so ago after years of using my pc keyboard lol

I think music is hard to offer advice for as everyone is different, especially when it comes to gear. I would recommend getting a midi keyboard though to start out with. Even better you have piano background.

Thank you for the helpful feedback, I really really appreciate it! I'm definitely looking into the bass, because you've made me noticed that I haven't handed off the melody to the bass yet and that it was something I was overlooking.

Some of the volume issues might be from me using cheapy $30 Walmart speakers that I got from my roommates for Christmas two years ago. My nice headphones fucked up and quit working. I took them apart and was able to solder the broken line, but it didn't get them back into full working order. Bass was screwed up and it only worked on one side. So when I've been working dynamics, I've been basing them off those speakers so I can hear it myself. Thankfully my birthday is Thursday and I've asked for some nice speakers. (I have had too much bad luck with headphones)

Speaking of mixing I have some questions. I'm probably not using FL Studios like your suppose to be, but what is the purpose of "pattern" and "song?" I've always written my entire pieces in a single "pattern." Would this help with mixing? Can you point me to some tutorials, etc?

I've also always noticed that my pieces do sound like a college ensemble and not a huge studio ensemble. I'm not completely sure how to go about creating this effect. Is this something that can purely solved in mixing? Or is this something that has to deal with me having only the Gold version of my East West packs and not the higher versions that allow for surround/stage reverbs that create space.

Anyone can answer if they know.

I feel like I'm a very capable composer, but still learning on the whole mixing and mastering game.

That kind of oldschool hiphop is usually all samples, if you're going for that sound, just start off by looking through classic samples. You can find a tonne of good ones by looking up old 90's albums on Wikipedia, the classics usually have a section that shows the samples used in each track. Or there's whosampled.com, if you just searched Nujabes on that, you could probably find a lot of what he's used.

If you're looking to get better, getting more hardware and plugins won't do that (unless all your plugins are garbage, but considering that you said you have FL, that's surely not the case). If there's something specific you want to learn, you can look it up on Youtube, other than that just keep practicing and making tracks.
