I've been working really hard recently I made those top two beats yesterday. They go from newest to oldest. I made a thread but wanted to post here aswell. What's your opinion on these? Would people buy them?
If they are meant to be for rapping then I would most definietly work more on bringing up the kick through the mix, the top one sounds pretty pleasant overall though, nice work on making it melllow. :)
I'm not too fond of the ringing tone of the kick, it sort of grows on you though so I'm not entirely sure what to make of it!
Second beat also lacks a defined kick, you can definietly dial back the brass and the main melody. Maybe even distort the bass, give it a real defined growl and notch up the bass on the kick.
Composition is very nice all in all, I would love to hear the claps a bit more, with a shorter release on them.
Third one has the same issues with a too low kick and the clap as well, I have a feeling this is going to be a thing that'll plague the other beats as well so I'll pre-empetively say that about all the other beats.
In fact I've started to think of a theme that also runs so far with the beats, and that they're just too... nice, there's a lack of harshness and aggresive tone to all the instruments, if I were to buy these I would've love to have a much more treble-ish tone to pretty much all of the synths. Are you high-passing any of the instruments? I would do so and see if you can't get a better sound from them.
Fourth track doesn't sound like a beat but more like a stand-alone track, it is nice to hear a snare as well, nice sample. :) Overall the track is nice and only lacks a bass really, it is clear now that you've definietly got a sound going that spans all the tracks and as beats the previous criticism stands, however! If they are just meant to be tracks then you don't really need to change as much, they have a comfortable sound to them, and a singer instead of a rapper is what you should find.
Actually, the lower you go on your list the more well-defined and nice the track sounds, the second last one (fidel) sounds really good! I would use that track as a reference on how the others should sound, if I were the mixing engineer who were going to work on your album.
tub-music nails the way the snare and hihat sounds, and the overall volume on backing synths and melody. fidel nails how high the piano should be, and how high the kick should be.
Is the kick clipping or are you putting a dist on it? It sounds like there's something like that going on, on my speakers. (fidel).
That's pretty sick dude, love the brass (i think), it really pulls it all together. I can't help but feel that the melody rhythm is a bit "clumsy", or sluggish. I think it has to do with the timing or the sustain, it should be more spot on.

Sounds a little 2000's era to me, heh. (Not necessarily a bad thing)
It sounds good and well done, but maybe you should try and play around with more basslines.
Here's something I made yesterday in not much time.
It could probably be improved but I wanted to finish it before going to bed:

It's cool man! I love the rhythms, especially with the bass/drums. I feel like I could here some clipping occasionally but couldn't really put my finger on it. The snare/clap could do with coming through the mix a bit more, I think, but I dig it!
Worked a bit more on my DnB song, I'm actually fairly happy with it (at least at the moment). I'd love some comments on how good the mix/mastering sounds and that kind of thing, as it's usually a crappy mix that demotivates me.

Also mastered that dubstep thing a bit better, although I think I pushed it a bit too far.

I've used the last two hours to work on this song! The weird background sounds in the beginning are actually me playing with Doom 64 sounds that definitely should not be tuned as a normal instrument.
There's a slight glitch in the beginning where the audio ducks away randomly. Forgive my music program for being like twenty years old.
(reviewing other people's songs right now)

I think the bass is actually a bit too heavy on the bass-end and can actually be a bit brighter. I'm probably a bit biased though, because I'm not a huge bass-head and I like everything being flat.
In terms of the song, it's interesting and reminds me of classic dubstep.

RAGE
I like this. It's very raw, and I love distortion. Distortion just happens to be the hardest thing to mix ever, though, haha. It still sounds good.
I'm not sure if I like the sampled "HO HE HO HE" or whatever that is in the background. It sounds too dry for everything else that's going on.

Pretty neat. I like the panning stuff you've done with some of the bass lines, though there are some frequencies in the first mix the sound a bit harsh on the high end. Specifically in the hats and the high pass filter.

Don't you hate it when you make something awesome and then run out of shit to do? That happened with this, I can't do anything creative for an intro or an outro that go well with the chorus and it's making me mad/sad. It's been a few months now.
Also i don't know how to media tag private SC links.. it just keeps getting worse

Bane of my existence. I've got so many songs sitting on my drive that I either can't figure out how to progress them forward or they're 90% done and just need a way to finish.
Unrelated, but I got over a minor roadblock with my current song, and hopefully I'll have that finished in time to put on an internet album along with 2 other songs of mine.

I think it's a bit lengthy at times, especially in the first part. IMO it would gain from being shortened at times. Also, from around 2.50 I feel like the notes are a bit dissonant, but perhaps that's just my impression.

[editline]30th July 2014[/editline]
Well at least that's the vibe I'm getting, sorry about that. The way it was written I thought it was just a suggestion.
[editline]30th July 2014[/editline]
Corrected.
It's basically a feedback quid-pro-quo, so you're leaving feedback and receiving feedback in roughly equal measure. The bottom line is if you post something, also post feedback for others.

That's a cool method, I've often seen feedback threads devolve into people just posting their work without commenting on others'.

pretty good for a first composition. everything sounds good until the bassline comes in at 0.23 though, it's out of key. i would suggest trying to develop your ear so that you can easily tell when things don't fit. if you're not too good with your ears then you should read up on some music theory, that'll help you out a lot with composition, but it's usually pretty strongly recommended to develop your ears no matter what

I've been experimenting with different genres.
Here's my now finished Liquid Dubstep track:

I absolutely love the plucky synth at the beginning! I've a few synths I've been trying to get that sound out of. The piano is brilliant, and the way it builds into itself is quite pleasant. Overall quite well done, though a bit short.
Also re-post for the new thread. Needs drums badly but unfortunately I don't have a kit or a drum synth so oh well. First electronic song for me. Done with Rhodes and modular.
If you're looking for drums I'd suggest searching for either a free VST drum kit, or free sample packs. I don't know what DAW you use but even if it hasn't got a built in Pad Controller you can use the samples directly. The song itself is quite soothing, I've always been a huge fan of Rhodes!
A new tune of mine. Not too sure of the genre, but it's electronic (with some trancy elements). I hope everyone enjoys.

You've got to love a nice echo'y piano. I like the transitions in this, very well done sir. The chords in this are also quite nice, lots of variation, though maybe switch up the melodies a little more throughout. I feel this would be right at home behind a climactic scene in some Anime. At times your avatar just dances blithely along with it!
I like the stuff you're doing in here, though it seems a bit repetitive at points. Try taking any piece that repeats for several bars and alter the melody after it's repeated, you'd be surprised what you can pull out of a melody like that. I like the transitional sounds and effects throughout!
Finally finished a remix I've been working on for a while! It kind of turned into my own song with everything of the other.
While I quite like the drums you've put in here, I think the mix could benefit from a better balance of all the different things that are happening. It's a little hectic and loud at points. (specifically about 1 minute in) Overall it's got a rather nice flow to it with those effects, albeit a little bit muddied. Keep up the work mate.
Decided to start writing an electronic track by first writing a score instead of doing everything on a piano roll. Because of the instruments I'm using it sounds more classical, but I still plan to make it electronic. I just need to find time to move it away from sheet music and into an actual DAW:

http://soundcloud.com/redxdev/untitled-wip-1-version-2

That's quite wonderful what you've got there. It's rather short and does mostly the same thing throughout, but it does it quite nicely with the polyphony. The only thing I can think that it desperately needs is some dynamics. Add that and you'd create a whole new level of depth to the song.
Here is a short little piece I was messing around with today.
The Shopkeeper:

http://soundcloud.com/russiangodfather/the-shopkeeper

That's just wonderful. I mean it's very short, but combined with it's name it just brings an air of mystery that befits a keeper of shoppes. Add in a percussion section or some breakdown-like area and make it loop and you've got yourself the perfect shop theme... Especially if it's a shop with a Shopkeeper who is important to the story!

thanks a lot man! that track was one of those that i resumed after a long time, and when i do that i tend to dislike the track more, but getting positive comments on it restored some of the good feelings i had before
you've got some really cool ideas in your song, i sort of got this feeling that you just went with whatever you felt like making. keep doing that man, that's how people innovate and start something new. one kind of weird thing i noticed though was that it had some weird beat skipping, try not to mess up the rhythm of your tracks too much

I really like the rhythm of this. I think it needs a good deal of polish in the ways of effects and dynamics, but it's a really great start. If you've got any melody that repeats multiple times try and make variations on it. Just keep working at the transitions and making variations on the melodies and you should have a great song in your hands.
In other news a friend of mine are doing this acoustic duo thing where I play cool guitar and she sings
we recorded a demo of a song she likes called Emmylou by Vance Joy (the same dude who did Riptide, he's not my favourite guy but whatever, this is a decent song)
I recorded a demo of just guitar and her singing, we're going to make a mixtape out of it but tonight I decided to just go full ball and see what I could do with it
I recorded the guitar part then just put a bunch of chill stuff over it then spliced the demo of her singing over it (which is why there's only one verse, the final chorus and its sort of out of time).
here you go

It's very chill and quite fantastic to listen to. That snare rim around 48 seconds in hits in just all the right ways. My only complaint is that area before the voice comes in again is a little boring, and the vocals seem to either be too loud or too soft most of the time. Quite enjoyed the solo there at the end!

I like the chill feeling this one has, and you can't go wrong with that Rhodes / Wurlitzer piano sound. In terms of criticism I'd try to add some change to it, make it evolve a little more than it does.
Holy tiny glass marbles I like this one. I think it could use some better drums and some more dynamics throughout. It feels like with each transition I'm almost going somewhere different but get dropped back off at the same place. But the place you keep taking me I can't help but enjoy. So good job mate.
Sometimes it's nice to have something on at the beginning of the bar. The back-beat thing you have going on is nice, but it's also repetitive. I'd try and add in something over the top of this, like you did near the end, but also changing up the rhythm.
The way this one starts out is just wonderful. It's got a great staccato feel alongside funky sounding synths, and who can't love some simple piano chords. Again it doesn't seem to change or go anywhere different throughout.

This last one is alright. It's got some nice chords but suffers from most of the same problems as the others, just all in one. So it seems over time you've noticed these and worked them out of your newer stuff, which is great! Keep up the great work mate.

Here's another little thing I've been working on, some dnb:

I love that effect on the kick, and I about dropped my goblet when the breakbeat came in. I love breakbeat drums! It's very good for a short sample. I'd love to see what you do with it when expanding it further.

I decided to make some sort of followup to the track Down In New Orleans, hoping to get a similar groove, but this time I'm working more on chord progressions, and making it a bit more simplified. There are some things which I know needs to be added, one is a strong lead melody, another one is some automations to make the transitions seem more natural. I'm a bit unsure about the middle part right now, currently it is a(nother) rhythm pause where I play the bongo drums as a steady rhythm and some freestyling on my djembe, I'm debating with myself whether I should have a solo instrument there as well or of I should just remove it completely, or shorten it.
I would love to hear peoples opinion on what could be added, I really feel there's lacking something more in the rhythm section as well, some synth or pad or piano. What do you guys think?
That percussion, that guitar, I'm really digging what it is you're throwing down. That breakdown section at 1.45 has a nice feel to it. It's very nice though drags on a little bit.

I started this a few days ago, I've been dry on music for the past year so it's refreshing to whip something up again. Hopefully I get to finishing it :/
I like it. I really like it. It makes me feel like I'm playing Super Castlevania IV again. I would suggest adding in a few more voices and seeing what else you can make happen to back that melody. Then break away into one of those sub melodies or into the rhythm. Don't be discouraged though! Keep working at it love!
Managed to crank something out at 4am last night, and continued working on it more when I woke up.

Hopefully I can get this finished. In a good mood last couple of days so I've been making good use of it.

Well I got about 20 seconds in before it stopped playing... and I can't get the drop box to load... BUT of what I heard, I loved it. Quite seriously if I ever get off my bum enough to programme my game I'd love to use something like that as the title song. I'll give you better feedback whenever I get it to play.

I made this a day ago and am, actually, really happy with the outcome. This is one of my more serious works. Other than that I have a bunch of other doodles, tests and fun times.
this is an example of random bullshit i do:

The drums and the way they came in were fantastic. I loved the use of effects and sound samples. The half-step drums gave me a bit of anti-backlash, though it's got a great slow-motion feel. It's a good track though I'd think about taking it off into a new and different direction somewhere in the middle to break up the monotony a little bit.
I adore the first one, I wish I had the ability to make stuff like that :)
I would've done a lil more stereo imaging on the second one but it's still good regardless.

This is a WIP from like this Winter (pls ignore the transition, I know it's bad, I never got to finishing it), I was making it for a game I play and implemented its sounds in the percussion.

Here's another from a while back, I want to finish these but for some reason I can never find a way to. Doesn't help I've gone dry over the past year :/
It's not so much the transition that is unappealing, it's more that it transitions into relatively the same thing. The lead synth near the end is a nice addition, though by then the song is pretty much over. I suggest some more voices to compliment what you have.
The second one has really nice chords and a great arpeggio. Though I can't help but feel that it's just begun by the time it cuts out.

That cascading Rhodesy / Wurly with the echo is subliime, but the drums feel one-dimensional. It sounds nice but it doesn't take me anywhere.

Here's something I made yesterday in not much time.
It could probably be improved but I wanted to finish it before going to bed:

It feels a little un-dynamic but it's got a good feel to it. I really like the percussion throughout, and that bassline is fun to listen to. It's nice but it's a bit repetitive.
Also that percussion right at the end seemed to me like a playful slap on the cheek right at the end... a fair jest sir, but do so again and we'll meet on the fields to draw pistols!

I've used the last two hours to work on this song! The weird background sounds in the beginning are actually me playing with Doom 64 sounds that definitely should not be tuned as a normal instrument.
It's weird sounding. It's a little freaky. It's quite a bit lofi in places. And I love it. Work on it with some effects to give it a little more evolution throughout and you've got just a fan-bloody-tastic song. No seriously, add some dynamics and a section or two more and this is something I'd buy.
This is my first time composing something, I used samples from Deus Ex since it's the first thing I could find.

I'm not really sure what to do from there, and I think what's already done can still be improved upon. What do you think?
It's nice but it's a bit one dimensional. Those chords you start with are ever-present in the song, try a new chord progression after the end of what you've got, and see where it takes you. Best advice I can think of is just don't stop, keep learning and you are sure to progress!

Now for a few of my own mishaps:
One I just finished a few days ago, hopefully a little more polished than my usual material.

Experimenting with db_glitch and a few other effects in this one.

My old favourite. Though it needs to be added onto desperately, I can't think of what to add.

The last of my really old material, an ode to the Isle of Man.

Posted some feedback on soundcloud :)
Here's one I started the other day:
https://soundcloud.com/sonis/bounce-02/s-u6SoL
160bpm 2-steppy stuff at the start and then footwork at the second half.
http://soundcloud.com/kaimaera/mirror-complex-1
It does sound nice and polished. Love the Drums that come in around 1:00. Drums are nice and punchy, synth is mellow. Love the dirtier synth that comes in at the end.
http://soundcloud.com/kaimaera/ominous-omniscience
This would do well with a solo-type lead. I love it though, everything is crushed very well. Got really groovy there at the end
http://soundcloud.com/kaimaera/orbital-teaser
Sounds really empty. Drums are thin, synth is thin, and there's no discernible bassline. Try adding more to the low end, and put some reverb on the high end to make it sound spacious, not empty.
http://soundcloud.com/kaimaera/the-isle-of-man-instrumental
I love how bouncy this is. The lead is really catchy. This would do well with punchier drums, I can feel the beat in me but it's just so quiet lol

I almost always hate fast drums, but I really dig this. That intro was an eargasm. I would suggest putting little differences in the drum line ever few bars. I don't like quick drums because they can get very repetitive very fast. Love the vocal samples in this. Very tasteful timing.
Took the vocals out of this, need a lead now for the verse. Threw in a few transitions and a second part to the chorus. About an hour of changes, let me know what you guys think

Neat, I like the underlying melody and how it transition from an aerial atmosphere to a more grounded beat.

I like the low pitch background. Not a big fan of the "DC engine shutdown" transition at 1.09, but I guess it's just my opinion. The part at 1.44 sounds pretty great, gives off a gritty sci-fi ambiance.
My old favourite. Though it needs to be added onto desperately, I can't think of what to add.

This one sounds really great, I don't really see what you could improve on.
The last of my really old material, an ode to the Isle of Man.
I think that's my favorite, I like the sound of the main chords.
The transition at 1.36 sounds a bit abrupt though, like it cuts right in the middle of a "height" of the song, same at 2.18. Perhaps add a few beats around there to smooth things up?
So I tried to resume my stuff from yesterday, got rid of the old bass line around 0.23 because it didn't feel dynamic enough from me and concentrated on the guitar instead, trying to coordinate it with the bassline, which I tried to add more variations to.

I think I can still add some fluff to it. I'm afraid it will clutter up the main line though. I'm also not quite sure what to add to that, whether I should extend the solo or add a bit of breathing space. Ideally I'd like to have something quite meaty akin to the UT99 soundtrack.
