Imagine for a few seconds you just got a godly player and then fakes you out.
Well, congratulations for catching that post quick enough; and yes I realized how stupid I made that sound.
I just find it fascinating at how seriously some people take sports in general especially in this country (because in some places we really do take it to a whole other level).
Granted there is shitloads of money to be made from that stuff.
someone could say the exact same thing about video games rather than sports and look at you, you spend probably well over $2000 on games according to your steam account
Do people really get that excited about high school basketball players committing to colleges?
Or is this kid like the Wayne Gretzky of high school basketball?
Someone from a school nearby was one of the top high-school football players in the country, set the all time high school touchdown record, and I don't remember it being that big a deal when he decided on a college, even in a football obsessed state.
Basketball teams have a lot smaller rosters, the transition between dominance at the high school level and at the college level is a lot quicker for basketball, and individual players can sometimes carry teams.
Wow you can cut through the apathy in this thread with a butter knife...
You know, people like sports for other reasons other than pure entertainment. You can find a lot of inspiration from teams and athletes. Knowing what just how much and how hard they have to train (inspiration to be supremely fit & healthy), what kind of mindset it takes to win games (motivation to take big steps in life and persevere), and how they deal with a loss (keeping a cool head and dealing with low points in life effectively to move on and keep growing).
If none of that makes sense to you guys that question why people have so much enthusiasm for sports, then I give up.
I don't know about other places, but basketball can be a really big deal over here, to the point that it can even influence the decisions of people over which college they should go to. For instance, ever since my university went on a winning streak in the inter-university basketball tournaments, the amount of applicants rose up by 20%, which is huge.
I don't care that much for sports as much as a lot of other people I know, but it's a lot more significant than it initially seems. Don't underestimate sports teams.

yeah, i can understand why some people might not like watching sports, i'm mostly included in that, but damn do i have mad respect for a lot of people in sports and i totally understand how pumped people can get from them. hell, if i'm watching with others and they're super pumped it bleeds over to me and i get hyped as well.

this is basically why i like f1. when you get to a certain age i think sportspeople can be really inspiring just because they're the same age as you. knowing that some of the drivers coming into the 2014 season are going to be younger than me makes me think "welp, it's time to make a name for myself and get something done"

Yeah I love F1 for that reason too. Sebastian Vettel (say what you want) being a 4 time world champ at 26! And then theres Moto GP this year.... 20 year old Marc Marquez winning the championship! Some pretty amazing history is being made through out racing in this era.
I mean really, a certain part to why athletes get paid like they do is because really, their jobs suck. Not suck as in nobody wants to do them, but suck in that the way that the position is never really secure, injury or even death is always a risk, and there's always pressure to perform, more so than most competitive jobs like sales or something.
I can understand getting as hyped as they are over sports.
My family was screaming during The International 3. I know esports might not be as big, but it helps me understand why people care so much about sports.
