Oh shit I was watching a program on the Science Channel about this. Like, some people associate colors with different flavors. I always thought some shit like that would be awesome to have.

I was watching something on Discovery that was talking about how some people taste sweet when they hear certain tunes, or see purple when they hear a certain noise.
I'm an expert in synesthesia, and I'd like to make a claim that the OP is lying. The condition has nothing to do with being able to see imaginary things such as measurements of time, or hear sounds when people touch something.
edit: or the facial expressions thing, that's just retarded.
I can remember taste.
I actually have this too with a lot of things, but the thing that affects me the most is the sound of ripping paper. Whenever I hear ripping paper, I experience a searing pain that I can only describe as: my throat being ripped in half.
What a coincidence, was just talking about this in my Advanced Human Biology class earlier today.
I can visualize places and people PERFECTLY in my head. However, I cannot transfer them into drawings :smith:
[editline]16th December 2010[/editline]
Is that part of this, or am I just high?
[editline]16th December 2010[/editline]
I can also remember smell.
I kinda have it. In my mind's eye, certain sounds or beat patterns make shapes/objects.
But not always.
Actually, just today I was listening to a song and a certain guitar pluck sounded like a robin's egg blue pill thing.

Anything becomes colours to me. I can describe a potato as grey, for example. Thanks for letting me put a name to the 'ability' OP [img_thumb]http://static.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/heart.png[/img_thumb]

I can also remember a few months ago, I got really into Modest Mouse, because the effect it had on me from my synesthesia was so intense that I grew used to it. Then, I was separated from electronics for a weekend and I got sick. Took medicine after medicine, the only thing that made me feel better was listening to "Good News for People Who Love Bad News".
It was fucken weird.
Hey ForgottenKane, rate this post optimistic too. The button should be right down there V

I associate numbers with colors and musical notes.

e.g. red + green = 5
I've got it. It's pretty weird, hard to describe. I mean, how can you accurately explain why a song makes you feel 'blue' and them not assume it's because you're sad?

I think I have the colour one.

I've had this for as long as I remember, I only found out it had an official term recently.
Synesthesia is essentially a condition which allows those who have it to - fuck it just read it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia
Your post tasted bad. :v:

One in every 20,000 people has a form of synesthesia. On facepunch, that statistic means fuck-all.
Nope I'm normal.

Because all those people are sure they're synethetic...
Well I see Color Around People Mostly

A lot of people get that. I think it's something to do with you brain stitching together both images from your eyes and fucking up some of the data in the process.
I think in 3rd person somtimes, but that is about it. Would be cool to have.

SHOCK, HORROR. MORE ON THIS AT 9

I should add in that the sound of a clap is fucking hell for me. The physical appearance of a clap is beyond beyond description.
Was waiting for the terezi post. In fact I thought synesthesia the moment I heard that she could taste colors and such.
Part of me wonders if everyone who says they have it actually does.
You know Aphex Twin, right? He has Synesthesia; apparently that and multiple lucid dreams inspired his album Selected Ambient Works II. It's a pretty trippy album, if you ask me.
I think I might have Synesthesia, although it's probably just strong association. Certain colors trigger really strong mental visualizations. It's strongest with blue; it usually causes me to visualize some sort of rainy metallic-looking setting, like a warship or some other large boat sailing at night during heavy rain. It's kind of hard to describe other colors though. It's usually stronger with pastels and dark colors than with straight-up colors. Also, some sounds trigger visualizations of colors, although they aren't as strong as the visualizations I get from colors. Reverberation affects this a lot; Usually the more reverb the sound has, the less saturated the color I see is. Different factors also affect the visualizations, such as volume, location, and pitch. Another thing of note: Blue is most prominent in all of these visualizations. I see blue the clearest when I hear certain sounds and blue gives me insanely detailed visualizations.
EDIT: Just checked the Wikipedia article. Sounds like Sound > Color synesthesia. Weird.

It's in 1 in 2000 people. That's 3,444,139 people worldwide. It's possible that not everyone here really has it, but you must also consider that knowing how medically screwed up FP is, it's not out of the question. Also, many of the people you quoted were joking.
I went through the list on the Wikipedia page and realized that I have a few of them. Most of the time I associate numbers with colors, objects and actions with sounds, and I can kind of see music, but then I got mind-fucked. I saw this guy at the end of the list: Lexical → gustatory synesthesia. I thought everyone had this. It's also the rarest form of synesthesia. It's when you hear something and and it evokes taste sensations. It's basically tasting sounds. I thought all this was totally normal. The sound of a person yelling, in any way, is painful for me. I don't know if that's related to my possible synesthesia though.
i have this things where single digit numbers seem to 'fit' with other ones to add up to 10
like 6 and 4 seem to just fit like puzzle pieces. i dont know if its the same thing as this though
Really.... I highly doubt even any of you have it. Try this see if you get them right. http://mindbluff.com/syntest.htm

Well it's good to know you're such an expert at knowing what goes on in my brain more than me. Phew, I almost actually faced reality there, thanks for knocking some sense into me.

I know, but it just seems to me like they have mental shapes that mentally fit together, like a mental jig-saw puzzle.
You know Aphex Twin, right? He has Synesthesia
Yeah, that's how I found out there was a term for what I had. Reading Aphex Twin article on wikipedia, see "He has synesthesia", clickit, "Oh shit that's what it's called."

That's weird. It's pretty amazing the things our brains will do to streamline things.
