He just worded it wrong. The accelerometers are able to detect normal directional movement, but not rotation.
A physical accelerometer which would be able to precisely detect rotation would need to be MUCH more complex than the present one, or would be more likely implemented as multiple separated accelerometers in corners of the device.
My ipod touch can detect rotation :S
