I'm not really keeping up with Artifact, but is it going to be F2P with booster packs like Hearthstone, or are they doing something else?
ugh
more card games
All you have to do is click on the video and read the first frame / listen to the first 7 seconds.
I am more than willing to give VALVe a chance on this.

Won't be f2p, in the video Gabe says that free access to game/stuff in games is a bad idea when it comes to value, whether it's grinding a lot in a f2p game or things become worthless because anyone can make an account, like the loss of value of refined metal in TF2. Neither the game or cards will be free. The game probably won't be more than $25 though.

EA's management is currently sitting there thinking "why didn't WE think of making that??

The game isn't free, but the card packs will also cost money? What's the point?

Gabe said the game won't be pay to win and card rarity won't indicate card power, I don't think they actually like f2p, with Dota 2 being f2p just to compete with LoL. Gabe said they want people bargain hunting for cards on the community market. If they follow Dota 2's microtransactions they might also sell announcer packs, new game boards, mouse cursors. and card backs.
Speaks a lot about the current level of Valve when the first officially sourced info drop does not come in a gameplay trailer or something of that like- but a god-damn twenty minute powerpoint business presentation. It's almost poetic in how it reflects Valve's motives as a whole now.

Man nothing gets me more hyped about video games than bringing me back to the days of college classrooms.
Tbh I get the impression you don't know that much about gamedev because this is pretty common ?
Even companies facepunch likes such as nintendo can be found giving 2 hour long presentations which are basically powerpoints at GDC. It's just a good way of conveying actual information.
Oh yeah, I've seen those shaky cell-phone pictures on twitter.
Quite something.
This is only the company known to produce some of the best trailers and other such pre-release type media content of the past decade.
Really this makes me like Valve more.
Advertising, trailers, and hype pieces are all pretty nasty things that I wish consumers would ignore more.
i wonder if the recent influence legislation has had on loot boxes will affect the way new card packs are acquired in artifact and alleviate the fans' concern over it

Rarity won't indicate power? I wonder where I've heard that one before... Oh yeah, from the developers of pretty much every CCG out there. Funny how that usually turns out.
Oh, nice video, can u post more?
-snip they got banned- , weird how that didn't seem like a bot but just a weird person
magic actually barely dodges legislation regarding gambling (and in europe sometimes doesnt manage to do even that) because they don't technically make money or 'control' the secondary market. im sure valve has top tier lawyers and advisors, but creating a tcg where they receive the profit whether you buy singles that someone else owns or packs directly from them is indeed incredibly predatory. and this is coming from someone who owns multiple mtg decks both online and in paper
How strange would it be that Valve would be the one to break the lootbox debate in video games and run afoul of gambling law?
If Artifact ends up being the straw that broke the camels back I will laugh.
Comp EDH is a joke format. Out of all the LGS' I've been to most of everyone goes by the 75% efficiency rule because watching someone go turn 2 infinite combo is boring as fuck.
Competitive EDH?
Only played by the saltiest of sailors, I swear.
I'm looking forward to when that oft rumoured Half-Life-set VR game comes out, if only for the shitstorm that'll ensue.
It's gotta be one of those other three games they've mentioned.

We've got evidence of it being worked on from leaked stuff in Dota 2/Steam VR Home, stuff for headcrabs, I think something about Combine turrets and/or energy fields, and crowbar ziplining. As well as the possible new Gravity Gun equivalent, the Grabbity Gloves.
i dont care much for it, i just want it to come out so we can move onto valve's "next game"
If this becomes very successful Valve themselves may not move on so soon though :p
everything aside from the arguments had before in these threads, I really want artefact to be a good game
i want it to upend the stranglehold that Hearthstone has
extra competition in that space is only a good thing for gamers.
I trust Valve's judgement but as the news pile up I'm worry for that the game might be a little too expensive for my taste.

We need to wait for a genre to get big so they can cash in on it first.

Richard Garfield approached Valve with the idea for Artifact in 2014, this isn't a cheap cash in.

I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that artifact will be in the 20-25$ range

Now it's a cheap cash in with Valve Time™

True it probably aint cheep, but I doubt they would have considered it if others of it's genre weren't so successful.
That the game sounds like it will just be a real life TCG but digital makes me not want to buy it at all. At least with real cards, they might have value/you own them. In 10 years, whose the say the digital card I have is even going to still be there?

Your point was that physical cards "might have value" in 10 years yet you question whether digital cards will have value in 10 years. Isn't the answer also they "might have value"?
I'm glad they finally utilize the raw horsepower of source 2 :v: I feel sick
I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that artifact will be in the 20-25$ range
But then you also have to buy new cards and shit.
But then you also have to buy new cards and shit.
Yeah not really a fan of a game genre (real and virtual) where you have to keep buying cards because of rotation. I think that Artifact will likely be good, but probably won't buy it unless they release it with more games in an Orange Box 2.0, or there's a sale.
