You're gonna be disappointed I think.
This is one game I can confirm is heavily affected by nostalgia goggles.
I've recently been playing through both and I definitely agree - if you played the games when you were younger and have thought about replaying, maybe don't bother and keep the current memories you have :v:
I know people complain about Sonic 2006 copypasting sections of levels and while SA2 doesn't do it to such an extreme length, it is certainly very noticeable with some places
that made me flinch and i didn't even remember sonic heroes existing before i saw this thread
glad to see someone else was traumatized by that as well
Chaotix's variant of Frog Forest can suck my dick.

i don't even know what i was traumatized by, i have completely forgotten everything i knew about sonic heroes. all i remember is "find the chao," "find the chao," etched into my dna and leering at me from indefinite points, like a shadow in uncanny gulping mists
did shadow even have a campaign in sonic heroes?
did shadow even have a campaign in sonic heroes?
Shadow was part of Team Dark with Rouge and Omega.
When Sonic Heroes is working, and you're playing like Team Rose or Team Sonic, it can be fun. One wrong lightspeed dash, or the slippery momentum betraying you because the physics are kind of fucked (which carries to Shadow the Hedgehog), or some other weird occurrence can promptly send you on a one-way ticket to the endless pits beneath almost every single stage in the game, though. And Team Dark and Team Chaotix are just.. anti-fun most of the time.
Team Dark was fine. It was just "Team Sonic, but with more enemies."

And the levels go from Team Sonic's 5-7 minutes (or longer by, say, Final Fortress) to ten minutes plus. And certain battles like the robot rush boss fights last up to at least three times longer. Sure, they play fine and are basically Team Sonic with a time freeze, but the stages start wearing out their welcome and it gets to the point that the fun sorta slowly drains out of your soul. Especially once it starts throwing out a lot of the giant hammer fucks.

Final fortress screwed me over so many times as a kid
I'll have you know that Sonic Heroes was the first game I bought for Gamecube back in the day :v:
It's only problems are pits of death and Chaotix's 'find the <insert object here>' missions, and some character dialogue. Really the only reason people play the game is to fight Metal Overlord which was one of the game's more redeeming points for badass final boss

"Find the chao"
Nah, find the Chao is peachy.
The worst mission was Chaotix's Mystic Mansion, by far.
Even if you know what your doing, it still takes at least 20 minutes.
Sometimes I randomly have Metal Harbor's stage music stuck in my head. I spent way too much time on my Dreamcast as a kid.
If Sonic Heroes did anything right, it was level design, music, and story
Story was near nonexistent and its only purpose was to kick off why these teams were doing stuff. That's all the game needed.
The music was really good and dare I say criminally underrated, though I could probably say that for a number of Sonic games like Rush or Advance 2.
And while some gimmicks in the levels were hit and miss, Heroes had plenty of setpieces and gimmicks that gave it some of the most memorable levels in recent memory. Just think back to sopts like the chase in Sea Palace or the switches in Mystic Mansion or the ship hopping of Air Fleet.
Problem is that the game is plagued with shitty controls and a lot of really dumb decisions like the awful special stages, too much combat focus, team battles that took 6 seconds to beat, and retarded Chaotix missions.

You know the story in a Sonic game's gonna be good when the intro is basically just Sonic reading a piece of paper from Eggman saying "I'm gonna rule the world, think you can stop me?"

I still have nightmares about that Rail Canyon mission
I still have nightmares about that Rail Canyon mission
I still want to punch whoever came up with the Chaotix Mystic Mansion mission. Are there people who think slowly extinguishing a cooridor of lanterns one at a time results in any sort of enjoyment.
And fuck the "kill every enemy in Grand Metropolis and if you miss one of the ones hidden in a side room you can't see be prepared to go back to the start and look for it" mission.
It's a shame that only a few tweaks could make Sonic Heroes something great and maybe even the best 3d Sonic of the era.
I found it funny that they never once mentioned the crossover/easter egg with Fantasy Star Online: Episode 1 & 2. You can find a chao from PSO and transfer it to SA2, if you had whatever that one GBA Sonic title was, and PSO item-thing-a-ma-jigs can be found in the space levels of SA2.
