Am I the only one who doesn't like Rickenbackers as guitars? They're okay for basses, but I don't like how the guitars look.
I dont like them either. There's nothing that makes them worth their price either. They're like the Apple of the guitar world. you pay more for the name and style than anything else.
Unless someone can justify paying 1.5 grand and then some on a terribly ugly guitar? :p
Solid-state as as far as I'm aware. Its a modelling amp - cube 20X, but I'm using birthday money for this and I need a job before I consider buying a good amp.
My budget is around $200 AUS, which is probably still $200 US though i don't know about the possibility of importing and how that will affect the way things work out. I'd like to go cheaper however, because I want to grab an equaliser pedal if I can, but only if I need to.
I don't know about importing pedals from the US, if anyone in Australia has done that and could tell me about it that would also be a great help.
Look into the VOX VT+ range
I use a VT20+ for at home and it's perfect. It has wattage control and everything so you can play at 1watt if you want or right up to 30watts. It also has patch saving to keep seperate tones, it's a moddeling amp but theres a button that turns it into a straight forward amp with no fancy digital saving etc
It's like a Valve(tube)-Solid state hybrid. It uses Valves in the preamp I believe.
Whoa whoa, cool down people arguing about building the acoustic guitar. Just wanted some advice since I stumbled upon this http://acousticguitarbuild.blogspot.com/ and this guy actually made one even though he wasn't a luthier himself

I saw the argument and I remembered about the awesome Popsicle Stick Guitar.
You should just use the overdrive/distortion on the amp. I base this on the fact that I don't see a point of buying a pedal that costs half the amp. Maybe get a better amp then purchase some pedals? Just what I would do.
I just bought a smashing little overdrive pedal.
Really small not very common brand but its the best Ibanez TS9 clone I've ever heard.
It's called the Biyang OD-8
[img_thumb]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fuks9sHYuiI/TA_HeG29TkI/AAAAAAAAAD4/pkGzf-65rqc/s1600/Biyang+OD-8+XDrive.jpg[/img_thumb]
It has 3 chips in it, one of them is a carbon copy of the Ibanez Tubescreamer that folk like SRV used but then it has 2 other chips in it that allow you to shape your tone more to your liking if you don't just want to completely emulate that SRV-texas blues tone.
Here's a demo of it compared to the TS9

Should arrive on Thursday or Friday, I'm so excited for it. I've been wanting to buy more effect pedals but so for I've found my self buying tone shaping pedals which is more important but I need to start buying the actual effects I want.
Yee.
You should use it in with a tubescreamer. I've done that before, it's a lot of fun. You can play quietly on low gain with the amp and then engage the TS to play a faster rhythm and then blast it with the second for a solo.
Though, that's only on a couple of my songs, when I play a real rock'n'roll song, I use the tone knob (I perform with one TS, but my friend has one).
I also want an octavia right now, does anyone have a good suggestion? I played one with my band today at school and loved it, I got it recorded too. I'll have to upload it in a second.
If you must.

If you wanna spend a little more definitely get this

I think that works out to about $185-$190 US.
But anyway, that renders my suggestions much more pointless. Tube screamers work best with tube amps, though you could try some out anyway and see how you like them.

The "overdrive" on the amp would be cranking the volume as high as it can go to naturally break up the sound, some people can't do that in their homes so overdrive pedals are made to kick the arse out of the signal with still being able to control what volume it's output at.
Oh and the OD pedal I bought was 45 quid.

Look at the Jim Dunlop Octavio, it's basically a carbon copy of Jimi Hendrix's Octavia even the chasis is the same, though remember his had fuzz and octave up combined you can't get a "clean" ocatve up with the Octavia/Octavio.

That pedal you got was about $75, good price.
I've been looking at the roger mayer octavia. It's a bit to pricey, so I'll check out the dunlop
The dunlop is £125 at my local guitar shop. I want it but I dont know if I want to spend that on it yet. I want a loop pedal, something simple to use in my room or at jams.. the Boss RC-2 is fairly priced for what I'm after, if my local shop would stock it again I'd buy it tomorrow! :p

I'm pretty close to the Chicago Music Exchange upon moving into my new place, so I've had the chance to play dozens of vintage rics/old ones. Everything from 330's, 660's, and quite a few 4003 basses. While I must say that the basic setup of each instrument is marginally key in developing a solid review, I've found that 90% of all the rics i've played (basses not included) have played absolutely flawlessly.
I'm a huge mod fanatic when it comes to guitars, but the rickenbacker is probably one of the few brands that I wouldn't even bother changing a thing. (even the tuning machines.)
It's an acquired taste for sure, but in a world where gibbys and fenders are skyrocketing in price, the rickenbacker holds its ground price wise. I can justify dropping 1500 bucks on one completely. It's all about how much you have left to pay rent..... hahaha
True, I suppose I feel somewhat the same about certain Gretsch guitars.. but imo Gretsch actually make nice looking guitars! :D
True that! I've been drooling over a few Gretsch hollowbodies for the past few months... I hope I can hold off until I leave for school in October and construct one. gah
And now my fingers are bleeding.

May just save for an amp in that case. Pity they're tonnes more expensive, blah.

DiMarzio or bareknuckle pickups for my sixstring?
DiMarzio all the way
[editline]23rd March 2011[/editline]
<--- :buddy:
Depends where you are. If you're in the UK, DiMarzio's aren't worth their pricetag considering BKPs are hardly any more expensive than Dims. If you're in the US then get DiMarzio's unless you're really looking for handwounds, and have the amp and guitar to make it worthwhile
Little question: I got my dad's old guitar and some new strings, how would I go tuning the bitch without something like a piano or other special tools?
Online tuner and a good ear
I'm in Sweden.
If there's a company in US that ships internationally then that would be great, considering how low the dollar is right now.
I believe Axe Palace does international shipping. Maybe look into Lundgrens since you're in Scandinavia

But that stuff isn't underpriced, 1000 dollar is only 707,06 euro's at the moment.
[editline]hey[/editline]
But that aside, I had good deliveries from them too and I am also Dutch.

I disagree, they are completely worth the price, well built, and some of the cleanest sounds to ever come out of a guitar. They also made history.

Here's a decent online tuner.
http://www.gieson.com/Library/projects/utilities/tuner/
That's my G&L away for a setup, £45.. not too shabby considering he's doing the lot to it.
After I get that guitar back I need to take my Fender up and basically get the same job done.
I sold my Squier Strat and my Roland Cube 15X today.
They're at 940 SEK (about 101 euro) or so at Thomann, I've bought from them before :-P
Could easily save 300 SEK (about 32 euro) when buying from the US
