Guitar Discussion Thread V7 - More strings the better

I've got a concert tommorow, but I don't know how it's going to be amped, I have asked to borrow a bigger amp, but I can only be guaranteed a cab. Would plugging my 30 watt combo into the cab make any difference to the volume? I play bass if you didn't already know.
[editline]24th March 2011[/editline]
If the person lending me the cab has his amp head fixed by tomorrow, then I have no problem.
Most basses will either get DI'd from the amp, or the amp will get mic'd up. Plugging into the cab will give your sound more low end which can be useful.

It's a school concert, and I doubt we're going to be able to use the PA. But the bottom end may be enough.

And evidence that you need to upgrade.
C'mon, man, you've got such a sexy guitar and can play, stop using an amp for highschoolers.
i could get a heavier metal sound with a roland jazz chorus with no pedals plugged in.

Because I have played a Jazz Chorus on its own before, I absolutely must disagree with you here.
I can barely get a David Gilmour level of distortion out of one of those.
BEAUTIFUL clean amps, though.

Would this amp be sufficient for playing small nightclub shows?
Save yourself the bother, the Fender Frontman series is a load of shit.
Go for a Vypyr or a Cube, most small nightclub's will still have a PA so volume's not that big a concern
I might be able to mic my amp up, but I don't know, what advice can you give in that situation?
If you can mic it you'll have no problem. if not you should at the very least be able to be heard at a school gig volume with a 30 watt bass amp. I think you'll be fine, although it'd be safer if you could get mic'd up

Out of intrest, how much louder will my amp get if i plug it into a cab (The head is a couple of hundred watts normally, and my combo is a 30 watt amp.)
It'll make very little if no difference to the actual volume, but it will add a lot of "push" to the sound, provided the amp gets anywhere the volume needed to drive the speakers, it'll just make it sound thicker overall, which is rarely a bad thing, particularly for bass

I get horrible distortion when I crank my amp up normally, will it help?
I dunno :v: I'm basing this on a very limited knowledge from plugging a distorted guitar combo into a 2x12 cab. It made no difference to volume, just made it sound... bigger. If you play it at the volume you'd be playing it at unplugged it will be the same volume but it will sound different
My guitar decided to work again :buddy:
One of the 3 batteries I have work, so I'm guessing the other ones are flat. Which is weird because the one that works is the one that ran out in the first place...
Guys I need some advice. All I've been doing on guitar lately is trying to come up with some nice sounding improv and pretty chord progressions. I've taken examples from other artists and learned some of their licks. Namely Clapton and Santana, which admittedly are still of course somewhat above my level. I was doing alright and impressing myself for a while but now I'm just burned out kinda. My improv sounds like bored. Can't get into the music and I can't seem to find a good tone for me either. All it's been is just like scales played in only a few different positions with some bends thrown in. I know I can do better with this I just don't know how I'm going to become better.
That little Biyang OD pedal I posted about the other day is fucking AMAZING. It's the Ibanez TS808 in a different box.
It's actually pretty cool what you can do.. when you get he pedal there's a compartment on the back you open and you can see a chip in there and with the pedal you are given 3 interchangable chips specifically designed to easily slot in and out of the pedal, they're called "opamps" (operational amplifiers) and the default one is actually the exact same opamp the original Ibanez TS808's used so getting that SRV tone is incredibly easy.
The other 2 chips are just similar but varying tones. One has a meaner gain and attack while being a bit darker and the other one is brighter than the default TS808 chip.
So happy with this purchase, it's the best OD/tone pedal I've used and I've gone through many.

Play some blues progressions and just improv over it. Don't think about what you're going to play, just feel it (that really just means, remember the finger pattern and start slamming away at something).

I kind of want that pedal now for normal use. It does have a DC adapter? AC/DC whatever it is.
I've been using my TS9 with a 9v forever. I really need a dc adapter, the back of my amp even has an extra plug.

Post up a sample of it with various settings? It'd be awesome if you stated what each was too so I knew what they were! :buddy:

As far as chord progressions go, just copy them. There are books full of them. Trust me when I say you're not ever going to be unique with a chord progression.
Work into slower melodic phrases and work them into your improvisation. If you look at most guitar solos, they usually have a few melodies or motifs that get changed up and repeated. A lot of times, you just need a good melody and the rest is set. Listen to In The Name of God by Steve Vai. Most of the song is composed out of 2 or 3 melodies, but the melody sounds really nice and he changes it in ways that make it more interesting.
Something I will do sometimes is take little breaks and think of what to play next, and then play it. I find that when I just play off the top of my head I end up just playing filler. The best state you can be in is figuring out what you are going to play next while you're playing, and that takes practice.

Gotta say, it was kind of underwhelming. You really need to stop clinging to it, cause it just doesn't have the feel, and power, of a tube amp.
Also, post 808 like EMGs dohohohohoho :v:

Well.....I play piano but last night I picked up my sisters old Yamaha guitar, I never played a guitar a day in my life. But the amazing thing is....I knew how to play.
Abeit poorly though, I know the frets 2/4ths of the time.
That's weird.
This guy is awesome!

Does anyone know of any good quality, affordable 12 string acoustics? Price range would be up to about $600
I have a Washburn D10S12, and it's pretty nice. Actually I wouldn't mind selling it haha, don't get much use out of the 12, I only have 6 on it right now.

someone teach me how to equalize whilst I save up some money for a proper interface
I have a D10 6 string that I borrowed from someone before I got my own acoustic and have never given back, never really liked it. Right now I'm looking at the Tanglewood TRD 12 CE, heard it's quite good.
Edit:
Ok I've narrowed it down basically to either getting the Takamine EG345C: http://www.worldmusicsupply.com/Takamine-EG345C.html Or the Tanglewood TRD 12 CE: http://www.guitar.com.au/guitars/acoustic/tanglewood/09/products/defaultdf48.html
Or I could wait a while and get an Alvarez, or maybe a Seagull
