Of course.
I'm half surprised I'm not the only one feeling that way right now. Though at least the kind of music you like isn't done with EMGs...I'm surprised by just how much I'm now convinced they're shit while still liking artists who use them (including the ones I'm using.) It feels like I've failed in a way.
Then I remember I had an easier time getting decent sounds out of the no-name chinese singlecoils in my the Peavey teleclone I started on and the wrath comes right back. If I get a change I'll maybe post a spectrum snapshot of these compared to a bass, it's unbelievable.
You have any opinion on my replacement besides what Knorre and Dopey already mentioned with the crunchlabs?

The input display isn't very fine but there was a speck of "this jack exists" noise coming in.
Well, I haven't heard Crunchlab's, or many Dimarzio's in person anyways, but they seem to be loved by many. I only decided on the PAF Pro because lots of people praise it, especially with the SD in bridge. I chose the SD on a whim as well, and I love it on my custom, but I prefer my ESP's playability/feel more. Also, since you are on a 7-string, your options are already limited :saddowns:
I don't think you are "failing" if you don't like EMGs, even though your favourite tone might come from a guitar equipped with EMGs.
EDIT:
Oh god, why ESP, WHY!? I just realized my Horizon has no grounds (thank you EMGs :argh:), so I'm gonna have to take the bass bridge post out, and drill into the slot to allow wire in for grounding.
I miss my G&L :\ It's still at the guitar tech and it'll probably still be there until at least friday and even then I don't think I'll be able to get it untiil the 7th because that's when I get paid.
At least I can rest knowing that when it comes back it will be set up awesome with some nice 12s on it ready to rock.
On the flipside I dug out my old chinese strat knock off and forgot how good those ancient little no-name pickups in it are, the guitar's about 10 years old now. I wanted to replace the shitty wood body on it with this nice spare alder body I have (which means I could custom paint it) but then I lose the body that was already on it and some of the charm and legitimate wear and tear.
Not sure, either way I'm goinng to spruce it up a bit and get it to a decent level of playability.
[editline]31st March 2011[/editline]
Also I want to spray my Cry Baby red. I have the spray paints to do it, just wondering if I can be bothered taking it apart to do it.

Hum. Their pickup suggestion thing only throws out 6-string models and the closest it shoots my "clarity" needs is a PAF/Evolution combo. Meanwhile, it seems like some stock 7-string Ibanez combos are the Air Norton/Tone Zone N/B on basswood, but the mahoganys tend to get EMGs or no-name passives unless it's like that Korn sig with PAF7s.
But, okay, so I've heard tones I liked with the PAF Pro in mahogany, and the sexy Art Rodriguez/Jamie Robinson demos have a PAF-7 in the neck, so really all I gotta question is PAF/lab/evo in the bridge. Or a D-Activator set since the demos seem to be growing on me and the higher treble might be a good thing given the scale/wood/etc.
Either way looks narrow enough to merit probing Sevenstring.org for reviews or making a thread.

Well yeah, and in a rational sense I know a lot of what I like with them uses them differently than what I want to do. Like Rammstein- love the band, but I have no intent to do nothing but palm muted chunkery or really fizzly grimy shit over synth and bass-dominated beats. I love the sound in that context but it's not the ONLY thing I want to do right now. And considering I can dope my bass's cheapass passives to sound active I can probably get a halfway competent 7-string pup to sound good on Links again.
Hell, this don't even sound good on Links right now. I gotta do a spectrograph snapshot of this shit tomorrow, it's insane.

Hahaha greaaaat.

EMGs are definitely lacking in the versatility section. The 81's Clean is like a midi tone, the 85 isn't too bad, but the 60 is better. 81 is good for chugging, but like I said, I find it's delivery of other things lacking.

Yeah, your best bet for finding the right pups will probably be there. If you do decide on getting PAFs(or if you are unsure), and I get them installed in time, I'll let you know how they are in Mahogany (mind you, it's 6-string, and the Pro version)
About grounding my ESP, that will not be fun. I really don't want to have to drill into it, but it is the only option if I want passives. On paper, it shouldn't be too difficult, but we'll see. I also have to do the same on my custom, as we didn't ground the bridge either. Man, I feel so silly :v:
Drop C on my acoustic
Drop C on my acoustic
Instead of "chugga chugga", it will be "Twanga twanga"
Instead of "chugga chugga", it will be "Twanga twanga"
That should make it sound fucking awesome
Drop C on my acoustic
plays like an electric
sounds like a bass
Put gauge 12s on my old strat and set it up for E Flat.. sounds awesome, the tone from this little no name chinese guitar is awesome. Now I have a E Flat guitar, means I don't need to keep re-adjusting my Fender or G&L.
I done a little research on the guitar, I've personally owned it for 7 years and the person before me had it for 3 years so it's roughly 10-11 years old, pretty cool. I like that it's naturally wore too, it's been through a hell of a lot since I had it.
it would seem you have an arsenal of guitars and music-related things
what exactly do you have LasGunz?
my guitar is covered in sweat after jamming for about 3 hours. am i doing it right
are you dancing at the same time or what?
are you dancing at the same time or what?
no i just chug like fuck :monar:
we share a room with a couple of dancers. they keep moving our walls that separate our stuff from theirs
annoying as hell

Awesome.
And yeah you'll probably beat me. My urgency just went out the window when other aspects of my setup went wonky, though I'd still like to get around to this semi-soon. Though now I've got one other little quibble suddenly.
I stopped by Dimarzio today (Namm booth) to thank thank for the good job making those blaze for me and getting them over to me on short notice. I was shocked when they told me it was an embarrassment to have their pickups in an Agile (My price is too low I guess) and that mistakes happen (implying it was their mistake to sell them to me) I just could not believe it. Oh well... So I am open to suggestions on any other brand 7 pickup that you might prefer for the future. Or maybe we can just develop something on our own.

Granted that was in 2006 but it's extremely fucking off-putting.

I never really liked Agile but I agree that's a dick move on DiMarzio's part.

I don't actually have a ton of stuff (yet).
Gear;
10 year old No-name chinese strat with surprisingly nice electronics
8 year old/2002 Mexican Fender Strat
New-ish G&L Legacy Tribute Strat (G&L are a derivative of Fender and personally I think they have better strats)
Vintage Wolfgang copy
NYC Big Muff (Electro Harmonics)
NYC Double Muff ^^
Biyang OD-8 Overdrive (Ibanez Tubescreamer clone)
Modded Cry Baby GCB-95
Vox VT20+ Amp (pretty much a home-use only amp)
^Wanna upgrade that to a Fender Blues Junior or a Fender Super Sonic soon enough.
The super sonic is double the price and not surprisingly a better amp, both sound fantastic though
I get paid for my youtube/machinina thing tonight so I'm splashing out on a few more pedals and what ever other cool guitar stuff ebay auctions behold.
And if you're interested in what I'm looking to buy (and to give me a reason to talk about more gear) I'm looking for basically everything. Compressor, chorus, univibe, delay, reverb and whatever other cool pedals I can find.
I like staying away from franchise pedals like Boss such and I love buying second hand.. there's something inexplicably cooler about pedals that have been used, are old/gigged and from smaller brands who tend to have a more personalized touch to their products.

Ouch! I don't know what Agile's quality was in 2006, but my Agile that I ordered last month for $330, is pretty great in every aspect.
note to self:
never by an agile
note to self:

That was 4 years ago though! Bugera has made huge improvements in quality in the past 3 years as well, as another example.
Just don't get a sub $300 Agile really.
Just don't get a sub $300 Agile really.
I don't know that I'd buy a $300 anything these days.
And I have no idea what they were like in 06 but if it was anything like there are now that was raw name snubbery. I've never seen or read anything complaining about a modern Agile that didn't come from a brand snob, most people seem to think they're as good as or better than anything else in their price range. Being listed as a part in them don't bother EMG or SD any.
Then again reps and show folk have a tendency to be shitheaps and it's years after the fact, guess for all I know the guy got his ass fired for talking stupid to another non-huge customer sometime between then and now, or even if he didn't it's not like he represents the company or some shit. I dunno. Popularity contest shit don't sit right with me.

I hate it when brands that bring very good quality:price ratios get knocked down by people as well. Like-bringing up Bugera again :v:-, Bugera always gets shit-on by Peavey owners especially, even though it sounds pretty much the same, even in some aspects, better to some.
I don't think I'll ever buy another guitar without playing it myself.
eughh hnngh
just downloaded the trial of guitar rig 4
must have
Just recorded 13 minutes worth of solos for a song, was so into it and excited, I forgot to stop recording, and pulled the SD chip out  Gotta record some more solos then...

Don't worry about it, you'll do a better job second time around :buddy:
Just recently I got together with a bunch of dudes interested in starting a band, and we jammed on some stuff and decided to record a structured jam we came up with. Recorded 20 minutes worth of bliss, and it turns out the microphone was turned off :downs:. Second time around, was even more mindblowing :buddy:

I'm pretty partial to NI products as I have kontakt and massive already and I like the way they do things
That Vandal thing looks interesting.

I was so lucky, I randomly picked a 7 string in the 500€ price range and ended up with my beautiful 7321  I don't think i'm ever going to play any other guitar than an Ibanez.
