The best part was that once I got it all strung up with .10s I thought the intonation would be all wonky, but when I checked it, every string was perfectly intonated. The ZR trem was a breeze to work with, thanks to the tension knob on the back.

Unreliable you were kind of right when you said what you thought compressors do.
In general a compressor is used to tighten up the dynamics of a mix in the studio, on and overall music track a compressor can be used to make a track playable on almost any system without sounding distorted or lossy wether it's through £2 earphones or £3000 studio monitors.
On guitar however it's more about the attack and sustain. If you set a compressor pedal as attack really high then the second you pluck the string it will sound out through the amp and there will be a nice big thud where as typical guitars and amps have a little bit of fade on. As for sustain, well.. because compressors and made to make a signal "level" as in it will match the highest volumes with the lowest volumes so they are all generally equal.. when you pluck a string and it starts to fade off the compressor is trying to boost the signal as it gets quieter thus making it sound like it's sustaining.
Guitars with heavy compression can sound cool but for all intents and purposes it sounds like ass in a mix or with distortion (after all distortion IS heavy compression, but applied in a different way). If you put the attack up a little and the sustain a bit longer you can get a nice tight sound from the guitar and everything will just sound clear and ring out a bit better instead of every string rining at different volumes and such.

Hey guys, whenever I usually play, my left thumb wraps around the neck, which is how I like to play. but whenever I play a rock'n'roll kind of line, my wrist hurts a lot and I have to move my thumb until it is almost parallel to the neck.

Agree up to the bolded part. For the love of god if you start experiencing pain then stop. You're either developing terrible technique to begin with, or you'll have established it and will end up with RSI, or worse, carpal tunnel

Also to somewhat contribute, I can't stand compressors on clean or heavily distorted guitars, and only occasionally on mid gained guitars. Every compressor I've tried (including my friend's Analogman Comprossor) made my sound quite "spongy"
Technically you shouldn't be wrapping your thumb round the neck at all unless it's for quick Low E mutes if I remember correctly, and if it hurts less then keep your thumb on the back of the neck.
Perfect technique is pretty much only practiced by classical guitarists where you'd get pimpslapped for not having perfect technique :v:
Electric playing is much more accommodating and it won't do you any harm provided you're actually careful and don't strain yourself anyway. Thumb over is more of a style than an issue
Fair enough v:v:v I really need to start properly playing again.
I used my thumb when playing chords and certain things perfect technique is there for people who need or want it, that doesn't mean everyone has to abide by or achieve it.
I play a lot of hendrixy stuff anyway so I benefit from being able to thumb the top string, can't say I can thumb E and A like hendrix could though :p

How do you mean "spongy"? Spongy like tube sponge or spongy like an ADSR envelope from under the sea?
RE: compressors I like this trick where if you're playing stupidly compressed pups you can make the ratio absolutely retarded (outright negative if it's a modern studio one) and actually [i]expand[/i] the dynamics. Works terribly unless you have robotic precision when picking (which turns a LOUD:LOUD problem into a LOUD:____ problem) but can be surprisingly funky in the right hands.

Pedalboards are surprisingly expensive. I could scrimp but there hardly seems any point when I will just end up wanting the big one in the end, and I plan on getting a lot of pedals so yeah :saddowns:
