What is a good universal guitar? Ie, can play extremely smooth clean chords to harsh as fuck metal
Any fatstrat.
The more I look at 12 string guitars, the more I want one, electric or acoustic Anybody have one?
I think they're gimmicks really, good for some peoples sound not mine. I sold mine to get a mandolin. There's a trick you might want to try though. This guy Ted Crocker who builds cigarboxes made a 12 string emulator, it's literally just two picks taped together with some felt or a coin in between to space the picks. Makes two picks hit the string when you strum. It works alright according to him. Might be a fun go. Oh, one thing is, you'll never be motivated to change strings. It's a complete bitch, and not just twice as bad as a 6 string.

Heres a sample of the kind of tone I'm getting out of a tube/solid state hybrid amp. Ridiculous.
friend of mine has got a PRS SE, i'm not sure what model exactly. that thing is a piece of heaven, i can't even imagine what a original prs would be like
Twelve strings are not gimmicks :colbert:
I'll restate that. They were a gimmick for me. I really wanted one because I'd heard a bunch of 12 string songs and was like damn, that's just the greatest thing ever, and then never had a use for it. If it works for you, that's great, but I'm just saying why it didn't work for me.
However much I may not like John Mayer's recorded music, he's still a pretty badass guitar player.
John Mayer is incredible, really bugs me that people think he's just a pop act (not saying you do Unrealiable). His technical ability is astounding and he stays really true to what blues guitar is all about. He's in my top 5 favorite artists fullstop, not just favorite guitarist, which he is one of to. Even his pop music is great.. but his Blues (John mayer trio) stuff is awesome. [editline]30th April 2011[/editline] Incidentally in the clip I posted above I play 2 of his songs.. or his version of Bold As Love and then one of his songs.. I'm quite happy with how close my tone is to his without being a direct recreation, leaving room for originality and adjustment where I need it.
I don't really like his music - I don't think he's a pop act, I just feel he's too restrained on his albums. Then again, I listen to all the old guitarists: Muddy Waters, BB King, Albert King, Albert Collins, Johnny Watson, Lightnin Hopkins, Stevie ray, jimi hendrix, ZZ Top. Then I have my technical influences: Paul Gilbert and Takayoshi Ohmura. Thank god I don't play their music anymore. They did teach me a lot of finger exercises and picking techniques.
Tomorrow i will have enough dosh to buy a new guitar. Hagstrom Ultra Swede! By the way the neck of that guitar feels like sex!
I don't really like his music - I don't think he's a pop act, I just feel he's too restrained on his albums.
This I agree with but stick to his live stuff because he gets to tear it up then.. his Hendrix and SRV songs are awesome renditions that don't stray too far from the originals. He even sounds a lot like SRV when he sings certain songs. I'd invest time looking up all his stuff with the John Mayer Trio, his album work is great but it's not what he's best at in terms of musicality.
Ebay is where I bought mine.
I got my most recent one for ~$95 and the other one for ~$120 If you have patience, then you will get a great deal Unreliable
Speaking of guitar bodies for building guitars.. next week I'm ordering up the rest of the parts I need to finish my parts-caster aptly named "Red" :D I'll make progress pictures and maybe videos when it all arrives. Really pleased with it so far, the gold bridge is perfect.
My guitar shall be known as Lady
How hard is it to learn to play the guitar initially? I tried to learn a few years ago, bought a guitar and everything and gave up after a few weeks... My instructor was terrible though, any advice on self learning?
Sigh. Found a resonator, but it's garbage at 150$. Tones pretty decent but the low E rumbles something horrible if you try fretting it without a slide, and the body is covered in nicks and dings. That stores got my patronage so I'm gonna see if he can come down on the price to something like 80-100$, then maybe install a humbucker or something in front of the plate.
I just started learning.
Fucking HELL I can't find my MXR Bass Octave anywhere, that shit cost 30,000 ISK It's been lost for two months wtf
Silly question ahead. When they say a guitar has 22 or 24 frets, are they just taking two from the bottom?
Silly question ahead. When they say a guitar has 22 or 24 frets, are they just taking two from the bottom?
Bottom as in where the neck meets the body, yes.
one has 22 frets and the other has 24 what's not to get but a 24 is just a 22 with two more frets at the top
Haha Electro-Harmonix are awesome. I contacted them about my broken Big Muff Pi that has no warranty, explaining it's my most used pedal and that it broke out of the blue and the guy said he'll make an exception and allow me to send it in for a free repair :D
Guuuuys? Is there anything to think about when tuning my guitar differently?
Guuuuys? Is there anything to think about when tuning my guitar differently?
If you tune a guitar differently, it will, durrr, be tuned differently. Chords will be where they aren't usually, for example. :v:
Guuuuys? Is there anything to think about when tuning my guitar differently?
Always tune down, if you tune up from regular tuning your neck might warp
If you tune a guitar differently, it will, durrr, be tuned differently.
Always tune down, if you tune up from regular tuning your neck might warp
I once tuned up to F standard and didn't notice for a week.
I have a guitar I keep in ostrich tuning but the thing was like $80 so if the neck warps I can just go out and get a new one
I once tuned up to F standard and didn't notice for a week.
I can't even tune up to E standard that well with my strings.
Always tune down, if you tune up from regular tuning your neck might warp
I usually stay in open E, it's not /that/ much abnormal stress.
