Carry On My Wayward Son, while cliche, is fucking awesome to play, and never ceases to make me feel badass.
Yo guys.
How do you ground the guitar? Do you run all the grounds (including the pickups) to a single point such as one volume knob and then to the jack output?
I have some problems and need to resolder the guitar.
On my guitars the ground is soldered to the volume pot and the volume pot is soldered to the guitar's copper shielding and the copper shielding is connected to the bridge. I think. You may need to play around with it.
basically the excess current is supposed to go through the shielding, then run into your hand when you touch the strings.

What's the point of these covers? Just a show thing, or do they actually serve some function?

they're good for thumbstyle and do alter the tone a very slight amount but otherwise just for show
I just bought some V-Picks. They shipped pretty quick and I only had to wait like 2 days for them to arrive.
I also ordered 2 and they sent me an extra one. I really like them and I can't see myself buying any other picks since they offer pretty much every shape and thickness you could ever want.
They really are not a good idea if you lose picks often at about 4 bucks each, though.

How so?

What models did you get? I'm assuming the little jazz III-sized one was complementary like when I ordered.
I got a Small pointed and a stiletto and they sent me a small pointed lite as a bonus
I need some help with amps
After 6 years or so of playing my electrics through a 30W practice amp, it's about time I got something I can bring to my bands practice and actually gig with. Because I'm poor, I have to give up the dream of getting an Axe-FX for now...
So, I need some suggestions of amps to look for and test out :buddy:
I've done a bit of research and from what I've read, a 2x12 combo amp will be suitable for bedroom practice, band rehearsals and small-medium sized gigs, so that's probably what I'm aiming at. The Peavey Valveking 212 is one amp I've found and I'll hopefully be able to find one and have a play.
I play in a post-metal band so I'm not necessarily looking for something super high-gain (I've been really liking my friend's Fender Deluxe in fact), I'd also need to be able to get some decent crunchy/bluesy/country tones. I play an Ibanez RG7620 and a PRS SE C22. Some examples of tones I like would be those coming from Porcupine Tree, Opeth etc, just that thick and heavy kinda sound.
Because I'm poor, I can't be super picky though, so basically I guess I'm looking for the best all round tube amp combo for around $1000AUD.

http://www.thomann.de/se/blackstar_ht5_head.htm + 2x12 cab should be pretty good

Is 5W really powerful enough for gigs?
A tube amp is.

For the kinda sound you're looking for, particularly clean and Opeth-esque, a Fender probably isn't a bad idea. Clean tone is incredibly important for post-metal and Fender's clean sound is just amazing and the distorted tones you're going after seem to sit in the realm of classic rock pushed further (at least that's how I've felt about Opeth, and that's how I set up my gear to play it) so a high quality pedal would do fine I reckon

yes, however there's this one otherwise: http://www.thomann.de/se/blackstar_ht_studio_20_head.htm
Actually I've just noticed how little $1000AUD actually is. I recommend saving, or military experiments :science:

For a little bit over budget, this is a good deal actually!

hey, It's enough for an epiphone les paul and a micro cube at my local music shop... in wesern australia :colbert:
It's not a small amount of money, but for a gigging tube combo it's something of a spartan budget :v:

I do believe that is the amp that my friend owns and I am currently enjoying muchly. 1000 was more of a guideline than a budget, 1200 is within the realm of possibility :buddy:
Of course, maybe it is best for me to just save more money and spend more money on an amp. I do want something nice, especially seeing as I've been playing for 10 years or so and I'm still on this little practice amp.

Look at a low wattage Blackstar. The HT-20H with a 2x12 would be a great setup for small gigs, and would probably run you around $1000 to $1200 if you know where to look. Shipping to Australia from overseas can be a bit of a bitch, but it's worth it, prices are so much better. Either that or go used I'd say.
A tube amp is.
Neither a 5watt tube and a 5watt solid state would be good for small-med gigs unless it was really really small to really small gigs with ~50 people being a stretch.
Upwards of 20 watts is a good place to sit for both conversation volumes and gig volumes. I use a 30 watt in my room that I can turn down to a very acceptable level and then crank the fuck out of it later for loudness.
As for an amp to suit his genre I couldn't say but a higher wattage Blackstar could be good.

Not to be that way, but considering you can get a B-stock Axe-FX Ultra for $1800 or a regular new one on sale for $1500 or $1400 lightly used, why not just save up a bit longer and get one later?
$AUD
50 watts of unstoppable sound coming out of my amplifier. At ten you can hear it two streets away.
