Guitar Discussion Thread V7 - More strings the better

They're ok for beginners and such but once you start getting into effects you'll soon realise you either want tons of good individual pedals or some really high end multi effects units like the Adrenalinn 3 or something.
Played another washburn today in addition to that sweet jazz box I liked. It was one of their vintage acoustics, and everything about it was great except the neck. They really committed to the whole vintage thing, the neck was a V shape like you see on old folk instruments (my Bouzouki has one). Not really a feel I enjoy.
In talks with a b00teekz pedal builder about building me a custom spec Plexi-tone style pedal.
What I have in mind:
A lowish gain Plexi style Crunch on one switch and then a generic Clean/Level boost on another switch, along with the Clean boost would be a Fat switch to kick the mids up the ass.
As well as that we're discussing wether 9v or 18v power would be better, could get tons more tone and headroom out of 18v but at the cost of needing it's own dedicated power and no battery option (which is fine, i hate batteries).

Now I want to buy a guitar and a screwdriver.
David Gilmour used to do shit like that with just a brass slide.

(He does it over top the keyboard section that starts at 4:37)
I was experimenting with that the other day while coming up with idea for my ambienty music project.
Someday, when I'm rich beyond my wildest dreams, I'll have the Fender Custom Shop build me an octave sized mandolin on an enlarged mandocaster body.

Fender overcharge for their custom shops.
I can't find my can of finger ease and I'm getting nasty string talk it is a terrible day

Mandocaster is worth it. Those things are beautiful, the only decent electric mandolins.

Is it because you were watching Phil X again?

Nah, I love Phil X but I'd learned of the mandocaster before I saw this. Found one once at a guitar store in New Orleans but I didn't exactly have 2k in cash on me. They're the holy grail of electric mandolins, but I usually play octave sized ones (more versatility, better for constructing chords).
Phil X is the man. Seems like he'd be an awesome dude to just hang out with.
I've had the idea in my head to build a little guitar, somewhere between a uke and a full size guitar, with a preamp built in so you can just plug it into any 3.5mm speakers as well as a normal 1/4" plug. Something really unique and maybe with 5 strings tuned in fifths or something. It'll be rad when I get around to it :v:
I love my amp. Best £130 I ever spent.
I don't understand how an 8" speaker, 1 tube and solid state and £130 can be such a feckin tone machine.

Also the headphone output is bizarrely good.. it's as if I don't have headphones on when I use them.
Granted I have a £170 pair of headphones to use, but even still.. headphone outputs are generally known to be utter balls.
I play through two combo amps at the same time when just practicing. I use a vintage peavey basic 50 and an Ibanez GPT10. 50 watts pushing a 10 inch Scorpion speaker, beautiful overdrive, wonderful tone. the GPT10 has a slashed speaker cone creating a distortion not unlike what was used in very early rock songs. the two combined create a pretty wonderful tone.
of course at gigs I play through a full stack, practice amps just don't do it for shows

the headphone output on my basic 50 doesn't even work, you just get a terrible crackling noise
I need a good gigging amp, I also want another small amp so I can play Stereo at home, it's such a kick.
look into the GPT10, it's only about $30. it sounds fine as part of a stereo rig

Doesn't everybody though? Past a certain point with just normal models for every manufacturer you're paying for the name/collector's value, customs have even more room to jack prices.

I want to try this now with my little practice Fender Frontman 25r and my gig mesa/boogie (me boobie, as I now call it) amp.

Oh no I can justify custom models being expensive and it's completely within their right.. but compared to a smaller/lesser known builder.. Fender aren't actually that great of an option if you want a 'dream guitar'. There are tons of small-scale lutiers who use higher quality woods, hardware, pickups and such and still build it to your vision.

I play gigs with a mesa boogie full stack, I love the thing

also: I'm thinking about getting a MXR Dyna Comp because I like compressors

Oh yeah I'm not saying there isn't a certain amount of justified costs for shit that doesn't fit into your normal corporate overhead, it just also tends to give most companies an excuse to inflate the price entirely because you could go get it made for less by someone else, so they know you must care about the name to an extent.
honestly I'd rather have a name like Carl Thompson or Jens Ritter than one like fender or ibanez on my instrument
I need my big muff baaaaaaaaaaaaaack :'(
I'm so sad mines broke.
Just finished replacing the nut on my mates PRS SE C22, with a new Black Tusq. Also put some heavier strings, lowered the action, fixed the neck relief, now it fucking screams (in tune now, too)

They're fine if you don't get massive GAS.

90% of the time independent luthiers are better than custom shops, but in terms of company's Custom Shops, Fender's is among the cheapest and most attainable. ESP is like $7000+ :v:
Feedback on bass is so fun.
Arhghhhh paypal are a fucking joke. I sent money to my bank on Tuesday and it should have cleared by Friday and it didn't so I waited for Saturday since my bank sometimes work on Saturday and it didn't appear.. so now I need to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday before it arrives in my bank.. meaning I won't get my El Capistan until Thursday or Friday.
THE ANTICIPATION IS KILLING ME.

Distorted bass, obviously?
