I hope some of these overriding titles for mods over bad punchlines have donations going to me, I need new clothes according to the girls at work. If it's going to be such an issue, maybe there should be some sort of compromise. How about actually contributing to the thread before you decide to make some tasteless joke about something in the article.
I'm not siding with them. I just think it's a bit immature for the moderators to close any chance of a discussion or consider a repeal of a rule because some people were acting like douchebags. I think that what they did, however, shows that there is a very clear hostility to a new rule that a lot of people consider unfair or arbitrary. I think that is something that should be either addressed in a meaningful way, or perhaps compromised.
What do you count as meaningful?

Some threads you can't really reply with anything other than "Oh, that sucks" or "oh, that's funny". Sometimes a joke or pun provides more contribution than is otherwise possible to a thread.

[editline]28th April 2012[/editline] oh cool new title
What do you count as meaningful?
Not sarcastic. Not hostile. I personally appreciate it when people are reasonable with me. I don't like it when people are derogatory or insulting. I am sure a lot of other people are the same way.
This is not a democracy.
Which is why I am asking. This is why I am not demanding changes happen in the rules. Of course it isn't a democracy, but it's generally a nice thing to at least listen to the grievances of the people you are moderating.
even if it were a democracy you're pretty outnumbered [editline]28th April 2012[/editline] either that or all your numbers are banned either one is fine with me
the only compromises on this rule i can think of are a.) the pun comes with a post that actually means something b.) the pun isn't a low effort low humor piece of garbage, or rehashed to hell and back (what a shocker!! i bet he did nazi that coming! lol!!!!)
maybe articles like that shouldn't be posted full stop what's the point of posting someting that can't be conversed? this is an internet forum
That's a fair point. I'm just asking because I want to know what BANNED USER would do if he was completely autonomous in the decision. I'm not necessarily arguing for more, just asking for clarification.

And what you're suggesting is we keep these threads alive.. with puns? What does that accomplish?
What about threads that are practically impossible to contribute to? Some threads you can't really reply with anything other than "Oh, that sucks" or "oh, that's funny". Sometimes a joke or pun provides more contribution than is otherwise possible to a thread.
I really don't know why you keep trying to convince us there are threads where it's impossible to truly discuss them. Why don't you give me some examples of these impossible to discuss threads, where you have to have tons of puns.
Find me a thread that is impossible to contribute to.
A day ban if you don't list a few.
the only compromises on this rule i can think of are a.) the pun comes with a post that actually means something b.) the pun isn't a low effort low humor piece of garbage, or rehashed to hell and back (what a shocker!! i bet he did nazi that coming! lol!!!!)
I posted another earlier this page that I think would be a lot easier to enforce
maybe it should just fall under threadshitting and whenever it actually shits up a thread is when you start banning for it? They are occasionally funny and I personally don't see any harm in one or two in a thread that has a silly topic anyway

Find me a thread that is impossible to contribute to. [editline]28th April 2012[/editline] oh cool new title
Well, the thread that caused the bullshit in the first place. Look at the on topic posts. "man i wonder if it really was just a pellet gun or what and if it was real would the dude have shot him had he failed to moonwalk so glad it wasn't me i cant moonwalk for shit i'd have been dead on the floor " "I do wonder how this situation even happened, though. Did the guy with the gun know the victim could moonwalk, or was he just asking random people to moonwalk for the shits and giggles? " These posts aren't bad. However, they show that the topic itself isn't really exciting except from the perspective of it being humorous to joke about. [editline]28th April 2012[/editline]
I don't even get this argument, if a thread isn't popular it should die. That's how forums work. All news puns are terrible.
PUNS and JOKES are OFF TOPIC so STOP DOING THEM jesus
he didnt ask for threads that you think are hard to contribute to he said impossible chop chop dont want you to get banned now do we? (we do)
I know I sound like I'm being the fun police NO JOKES ALLOWED but if the extent of your post is a shitty one liner you're asking for a ban
The thread would probably be second page by now if it hadn't caused such a scene. There's nothing to actually discuss. It's something for people to laugh at. Well that didn't automerge how I expected it.
he didnt ask for threads that you think are hard to contribute to he said impossible chop chop dont want you to get banned now do we? (we do)
It's impossible to contribute to locked threads. :v:
The thread would probably be second page by now if it hadn't caused such a scene. There's nothing to actually discuss. It's something for people to laugh at.
yeah and if they're gonna laugh at it they should try being more clever than shoving a few mj song titles into a post and calling it a joke
The thread would probably be second page by now if it hadn't caused such a scene. There's nothing to actually discuss. It's something for people to laugh at. Well that didn't automerge how I expected it.
There was no chance for discussion in that thread due to the "pun revolution" that was going on. Do you have any other examples?
The thread would probably be second page by now if it hadn't caused such a scene. There's nothing to actually discuss. It's something for people to laugh at. Well that didn't automerge how I expected it.
I see discussion being made in that thread. so much for being "impossible to contribute"
he didnt ask for threads that you think are hard to contribute to he said impossible chop chop dont want you to get banned now do we? (we do)
But why is he asking for threads that are impossible to contribute to in the first place? I said "practically impossible" I.E. hard. I'm saying that there are threads where there isn't much useful discussion material. If you force it, of course you can come up with a generic post to any thread.
These posts aren't bad. However, they show that the topic itself isn't really exciting except from the perspective of it being humorous to joke about.
You didn't say a thread that doesn't have very good discussion. You said a thread where you can't contribute beyond puns. If this is such an issue it shouldn't be hard for you to find us some examples. This really isn't going anywhere.
You didn't say a thread that doesn't have very good discussion. You said a thread where you can't contribute beyond puns. If this is such an issue it shouldn't be hard for you to find us some examples. This really isn't going anywhere.
Wait a second please, postal. I am compiling a small list as we speak.
What about threads that are practically impossible to contribute to? Some threads you can't really reply with anything other than "Oh, that sucks" or "oh, that's funny". Sometimes a joke or pun provides more contribution than is otherwise possible to a thread.
This is a bad excuse. maybe there are threads where you don't know what to contribute, so perhaps you should wait for someone to spark conversation and join that instead of making a terrible joke.
Also: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1179754 http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1179564 - This one actually has nothing except jokes. http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1179445 http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1178999 Albeit, some of these don't even have pun potential, but it highlights my point that there are threads out there that are meant as mild entertainment versus serious intellectual discussion. If those threads are to die, fine. I was just asking in the first place lol. [editline]28th April 2012[/editline] Like, if we can make puns as long as there is actual contribution attached to the post, that's fine with me, and I thank you guys. I was asking that question for clarification, not to push.
