You'd prefer blue than RPS?
If you're annoyed that garry got rid of the RPS bot, why don't you try going here:
[url]http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/[/url]
Apparently they've got all the RPS articles available there.

You could say that about any bot in the news node, why not just go to the site?
[QUOTE=LordCrypto;34584786]by first not making 40 requests a page for it[/QUOTE]
ok mr smartass how else would you load 40 images without making 40 requests
[editline]7th February 2012[/editline]
no "cache" bullshit, remember you have to load all images the first time you load a page anyway
What is with all the hate with the RPS newsbot?
I'm not well versed in the art of news bot functions so I may come off as ignorant, but as a game journalism website it isn't their fault if the news bot catches articles that some members of FP find pointless.
Lets try to define the general pros and cons of that website:
[i]Pros[/i]
[b]*Quality:[/b] Many of us enjoyed the journalism that they shared.
[b]*Featured lists:[/b] Whether it was about crazy sales or top 10 something-somethings it was always good to read these, as many found these useful.
[b]*Humor:[/b] Sure there were some failed attempts at funny takes on news and game reviews but I for one found that almost all of them that I've read left me laughing afterwards.
[b]*Down to Earth:[/b] They are defending your gamers rights, they hate abusive DRM, they don't want corporate control over your internet, all this makes them rather relatable.
[i]Cons[/i]
[b]*RockPaperNotch:[/b] They caught Minecraftmania a while ago and for the next couple of months most of the articles posted were about Minecraft. Sure a whole bunch of people enjoyed this, but as Notch became increasingly slower with updating the game, as well as taking many unwarrented vacations (plus lazy feature implementations), the members of FP started to resent their pre-purchase of Minecraft. They became betrayed by their trust in Mojang and in so favour of Minecraft declined here. RPS slowed down on the articles about Minecraft but there were still one to two articles posted per day, which began to annoy some of us Facepunchers. It's from this that most of the hate comes from now.
[b]*RockPaperBlog:[/b] Many feel that their articles come off as less news and more life stories about games. [i]Newsbots are to blame for giving you these articles, not FPS.[/i]
For those that have been on FP for a while will probably remember CsNation, we had a newsbot also ripping articles and reposting them here. It was great, kind've like RPS (without the piss take articles). Until two articles came up.
They posted that they had a BIG SECRET that they were going to share the next day (or something along those lines) and people here were torn on what to think about it and caused a lot of talk within the News Node. The next day they revealed what it was...
[b]RUMORS OF A COUNTER-STRIKE BETA[/b]
Okay, fair enough. They don't post articles just for Facepunch. It is Counter-Strike news and very big news too. It's the newsbot that posted it on Facepunch, not CsNation themselves. But what did the majority of Facepunch think about this?
[i]Facepunch didn't like this. Not. One. Bit.[/i] They didn't like the fact that they got pumped up so much, made themselves hyped up for extreme news that they would enjoy, only to find out this big secret is that there are [i]rumors[/i] of Valve throwing CS-Source into a beta program. They bitched about it so much, blinded by their own rage to see how pointless throwing a fit about it actually is, that prompted the Mods and Garry to remove it for the public opinion.
Did CsNation do something wrong? No, Facepunch did something wrong, and at this point half mourned the loss of a great newsbot while the other half paraded in celebration.
Now the same (similar?) thing has happened. RPS is gone and been replaced with Shacknews and Bluenews. I think Shacknews is okay but I'm willing to bet that Bluenews is a ploy to show you that RPS actually provided content. If this has changed your opinion then please stop bitching about RPS and show support for it coming back, otherwise if you still don't like it then I'm sure you have your reasons.
[i]I've re-read the OP and this has been a topic lately.[/i]

If I were to try to give it credit, maybe when it was added it posted some useless non-articles it wasn't meant to post and next time it fetches some they will actually be proper articles.
I'm reserving judgement until the next wave.

Ok, Here me out.
Why not when the user posts. Just put a flag code in the database and ONLY send the link to the flag image. The you can:
1) Cache the flag images
2) Be rid of Hashes
So instead of sending a image tag pointing to flagdog.facepunch.com/flag.php?id=283746528
Just do
flagdog.facepunch.com/us.gif
[QUOTE=fruxodaily;34585770]You'd prefer blue than RPS?[/QUOTE]I find the blue threads good for a laugh, they all just link to other articles and the only posts in the threads are people complaining.

When I go here on Firefox all the Soundcloud things play at once.
It's fine on all other browsers.. anyone else get that on Firefox?
What happened in the SHED.MOV thread? Why is it like 700 posts?
I really don't want to read the whole thread.
it's apparently the new mlp chat thread
Was*
[QUOTE=Nintendo-Guy;34586378]it's apparently the new mlp chat thread[/QUOTE]
Not really.
It's just parody videos basically and it goes off-topic and turns into a mlp discussion.
They made a steam group and agreed to let the thread be closed until the guy makes another video.
oh, i see

see
[QUOTE=TehWhale;34575349]Garry is sending at least 40 requests per page to flagdog to respond with an image for the ip it sends. When you post, your IP should be checked and there should be another column on the posts for the country code. For example it would be gb. When it loads the post it will just display $countrycode.png. It is a lot faster, there won't be any hashed ips floating around and it's just so much better.[/QUOTE]
[editline]ninja[/editline]
you're thinking he meant 40 requests for images, what i think everyone else is talking about is 40 requests to the flagdog script with various hashed IP addresses which need to be decoded, calculated with geoip and then return relevant image, for every load, when it was something that would have been far better implemented as something that was calculated once for each post, not once for each post for each view.

Works fine for me. The soundcloud player doesn't even load until I click "Listen to Soundcloud recording", let alone start playing.
- merged above - (also wow this was a waste of my lucky 777'th post)
Is the OS indicator removed? Random peoples OS isn't showing up.

yeah so I agree how flagdog works is dumb but you're never going to get around having to load 40 images - which is what the complaint was about
I doubt that images that are smaller than 1KB influence loading times at all.
[editline]7th February 2012[/editline]
Or performance.
where is the flags?
