The only way to verify that the header is telling the truth is to read the entire image file, and I don't think that's something garry wants to rape his CPU with.

a supersnail avatar adds more or less 100 pixels to a one line post. at that size, i'd say that's the largest a regular member is going to get

In my opinion of the avatar sizes, on a 1440x900 screen, you should be able to fit one LARGE avatar (like Liem's) and one normal avatar (mine) on a maximised chrome window. That way you can read both posts at the same time as well as seeing the entirety of both posts and their borders.
