why do people always assume the cinematics are being done by core gameplay devs instead of coding the game
this is a whole different division of blizzard dedicated to making shiny animations, and seems likely it's where their entire marketeting budget has been dumped

do you honestly think that artists and coders are the same people
Where did I say that the same teams were working on it?
Lets not bullshit and strawman what he said. His point is that they're doing these cinematics and trying to add all this story and character interaction in to the game. His point is that they're doing story stuff outside just the game, not that they're taking resources away from development to do so.
Let's all try to remain intelligent, shall we?
-neh-
Wow, this is bad writing. Good visuals, but bad writing.
Where did I say that the same teams were working on it?
your entire post???
putting energy into making these shorts and comics instead of sticking completely to the game.
because the animators have nothing to work on but cinematics now that all their gameplay work is done prior to release. THIS is what they can put their energy into. The comics are also from secondary artists outside of blizzard, it's not all just a pile of same-job game programmers pecking away at code 24/7
this is all marketing, not just little pet project stories for their own fun
maybe this part

I didn't mean creating the actual gameplay, I meant just marketing the game. If they weren't trying to create a story for this universe, they why would they put in the energy into doing so in the first place? You know, with all of the backstory, comics, animations, etc. It's pretty obvious they want people to pay attention to the story. Or else they could have just went with "story doesn't matter, just enjoy the game" route.
These shorts ARE marketing the game.
These shorts ARE marketing the game.
Especially since they'll be showing in movie theaters when the game launches- much like the "Meet The" shorts, they serve dual purpose.

much better explained
there's a bit of lore already written out between these two and the whole 'why hanso killed genji' and their whole relation in that future yakuza organization. That's all fine and dandy, and anyone actually looking for lore will figure it out pretty fast.
The reason the short probably remained so baseline with its story, is that it isn't a lore piece but an action piece, and should be simple to understand for someone completely on the outside so people don't feel lost processing all the information. If you're asking for more lore because of it, I'd say it succeeded at marketing

This video is a hack fraud, like someone said. I really hope this video doesn't gain traction (or it does and the guy gets called out.)
Snake. We're not tools of the government, or anyone else. Fighting was the only thing... the only thing I was good at. But... at least I always fought for what I believed in.
They're cheesy AND enjoyable as hell
you all need to chill
Blizzards character lines are usually full of cheesy cliche's and one liners
They have some of the best artists in the industry but jesus christ you think they could hire some decent people to write these lines.
FOOLISH HANZO, YOU THOUGHT THIS WAS THE ONLY WAY TO REDEEM YOURSELF? ENOUGH!
Yeah all the shorts are cheesy as hell, but they look gorgeous and they're fun to watch.
I mean yeah I'd prefer if they had better writing, but at the end of the day I still like me some cheesy shit now and then, and the shorts have been some high quality cheese.
honestly if people don't think a samurai/ninja having an encounter with a samurai/ninja brother who was thought was dead isn't going to be cliche/cheesy then idk what to think
Someone pointed out that there's evidence of what happened in the short in the Hanamura map, like the big lantern thing that Genji crashed through in the short actually looks damaged in the map, some arrows embedded in the walls from Hanzo, etc. They had screenshots and stuff.
That's a pretty nice touch. Reminds me of how the Sniper in TF2 was updated to include a scar on his face after the "Meet the Spy" short.
EDIT: Here you go:

I mean the very first thing we saw of this game was an intelligent gorilla with glasses fighting a dude in black robes with two shotguns and a skull for a face.
It's not like it was high-brow, It's been cheese since day one.

Also, there's a memorial for Mondatta on King's Row, and Winston's lab on Watchpoint Gibraltar was changed after the first short to include the photos of the other Overwatch members, the smashed window, etc.
cheesiness and good writing are not mutually exclusive
It's cheesy but in a bad way, imo. Like even good cheese can still have characters that aren't generic good guys/bad guys with boring motivations.
This video is a hack fraud, like someone said. I really hope this video doesn't gain traction (or it does and the guy gets called out.)
Hack fraud?
cheesiness and good writing are not mutually exclusive
But Blizzard games and good writing appear to be mutually exclusive these days.
I find the writing in the recent shorts to be very hit and miss than straight up godawful.
Like, "lowest common denominator corporate bullshit" as Ross Scott put it would be a more accurate picture of Borderlands 2 than this.
I thought the script was alright, alot better than 'Alive'.

I think the better voice acting sold me this time, I can't stand Tracer's voice
Called out for...?
Called out for saying that he predicted everything. People are eating it up.
See what this poster said:
right in location, and i guess the reason for going, but was kinda wrong about everything else
like, basically everything after the start is wrong, genji isn't being repentant at all, it's hanzo who is pretty damn guilt-ridden and in the wrong

not really?
he gets the interaction entirely wrong
genji isn't guilt ridden at all, it's pretty obvious that he's like "yo hanzo you can redeem yourself if you stop being an ass"
like, if i saw the teaser and then said a load of vague shit that i already knew about (aka hanzo genji interactions) i reckon i'd get at least some of it right
also he completely ignores all of the children storytelling shit that is going alongside the trailer
blizzard have shit writers, but that guy was completely off the mark on a lot of shit, and only seems right because at that point, the teaser had come out with a lot of the predictions he made (the temple, the ult, a fucking fight)

Someone pointed out that there's evidence of what happened in the short in the Hanamura map, like the big lantern thing that Genji crashed through in the short actually looks damaged in the map, some arrows embedded in the walls from Hanzo, etc. They had screenshots and stuff.

It always bothered me that they decided to include the scar even though he later gets back-stabbed and literally dies.
Called out for saying that he predicted everything. People are eating it up.
when did he say he predicted everything? he just said they're predictable, and used his prediction for a video. nowhere does he say his prediction was right
Oh my bad.
when did he say he predicted everything? he just said they're predictable, and used his prediction for a video. nowhere does he say his prediction was right
uhhh
[editline]16th May 2016[/editline]
He predicted the video, never said his prediction was 100% right, and as it turned out his prediction, while the finer details were certainly off, was still on point enough to be recognizably similar down to an easily comparable final interaction.
everything he predicted was garbage he gathered from the previews we already saw of it. Somehow he even fucked up that genji was going to be repentant of something even though the existing lore flat out explains hanzo killed genji over family blood and he fights to seek repentance for the wrongs he did. That's the ENTIRE dynamic between the two of them, repentance and forgiveness
plus the dude made the edit of his video with the real clips as a "fucking told you so" after it came out
