Just because smartness and instaban are gone and Facepunch is less strict, doesn't mean it isn't still too strict.
If you ever saw comments about Facepunch on other forums you'd be amazed, they actually think of this place as a giant shitposting hole filled with tards, no better than /b/. There is one thing, one primary difference between 4chan and Facepunch that makes all the difference: anonymity. With people not being anonymous here, they can't get away from their reputation. The double-edged sword comes down when the community polices itself (and all communities do). The problem is that often, it is the shitposting retards who "own" sections of the forums, so good posters often get driven out.
The other most common complaint I see (besides shitposting) is inconsistant and ham-handed moderating. This plays out really badly when the previously mentioned shitposters gang up on a newbie and goad him into breaking the rules, while they look innocent and were just "defending their turf". What I'm getting at is, being just more strict doesn't stop the dumb. You have to be strict in the right ways.
Also I don't see how an image macro ban solves anything. It's like putting a band-aid over a bullet wound: looks good on the outside but doesn't actually fix the problem (problem being shitposters)
Before people worry about quality control. You should head over to SA. I have not dared to make a thread there yet since if you fuck up you get banned.
I miss the smartness system and the instabans were hilarious sometimes. However, it still was a bit of pain in the Swedish subforum since some Swedish words were mistaken for misspelled English ones. The most annoying one was "som", which is Swedish for "as". But still, it made Facepunch what it is today.
If anything I think Facepunch should be stricter, back like it had once been in 2005-early 2007. The reason it changed though was because Garry made Facepunch an official business. When things like Autoban, smartness, and even the ban list were active it really made users careful on what they post. Hell, half the reason I type well was because of early Facepunch. I've been here for a while and I can definitely say that this era of Facepunch is very lenient compared to its early years.
I wouldn't say too much quality control is a problem, but the lack of any consistent moderation is a problem, especially when mods base ban time on their own opinions too much.
It was much better back when the older mods banned on a set of strict guidelines. Now Garry has kind of left it up to each mod to determine what's considered bannable other than what is strictly stated in the stickies. So a lot of the time users either get banned for extremely stupid shit, or extremely dumb users get away with extremely stupid shit.
I definitely loved when Moderators ruled with an iron fist, it shaped us older users into who we are now.
As a former moderator, I'd say there's a lot of shit that gets filtered out of the system by the rules/enforcement that would lower the overall quality of discourse

That said, yes, leaving things to wide open interpretation of mods who can take it any way they want is so frustrating. The whole thing with TH89 happened because of this, and there are a million other examples. Once I got banned with the reason "piracy" when I was talking in a thread, about piracy, about why I might download a game and what I'd do with it after. When I asked for an explanation of my ban, they said it was because I was bragging about piracy. The particular mod who banned me is a developer who has very strong feelings about piracy and I think he bent the rules with his personal beliefs.
I think one of the most important things we could have is a way to hold moderators accountable to bad bans. Yeah, sure, Spork-Juct and TH89 got booted, but they weren't the only shit mods.
Go take a look at some forums with little quality control.
Like a kiddies game forum.
I was 14 when smartness was around and I didn't get banned.
Now I'm 18 and I've been banned twice, one time was completely fair (discussing warez) and the other I believe was also fair.
Not every ban is fair, but as a whole, the moderation here is adequete enough to keep this a reasonably controlled forum. Anyone who disagrees is probaly just looking for reasons to post their blog threads, ask questions in GD as an entire thread, or post image macros.
Think of it this way, what if what you wanted to do, everyone else also did? You may think posting your question in GD is fine because you are starting a valid general discussion (What games should you NOT pirate? etc etc) but if everyone starts posting like that, GD will look like this
What should we not torrent? [2 new replies]
What type of cat is best? [36 new replies]
Which religion is the stupidest? [9001 new replies]
etc etc. If you have a question and it needs it's own thread, it goes in fast thread.
You do NOT need to post an image macro. Posting a trollface or a picture of a random cat is not funny.

and don't forget about everyone using stupid meme's and macro images
if everyone used stupid memes, it'd die, fast. This happened to "THIS IS SPARTA" way back in the day when the movie first came out.

it'd look like 4chan within days
it'd look like 4chan within days
Clearly you guys don't understand that there is a psychology behind /b/ that doesn't exist here. It would take a lot more than some image macros to change that.
Also those thread titles belong in "Fast Threads". This should be obvious to anyone who reads stickies (which should be everyone). I mean really, if you don't read the rules stickies and get banned, I'm not going to feel sorry for you.

There's a psychology at /b/ where posting anything is accepted. However, we are saying that, as /b/ is also full of shitposts, Facepunch would be full of shitposts if moderation was lessened.
There's a reason imageboards exist like that, if you want to trolololo and post pictures of cats, you can feel free to head over there.
Wow you're pretty damn clairvoyant
[sp]I am 13 and I stopped using smileys like that when I was 12. Way to be a stereotyping asshole.[/sp]
I don't blame him, a lot of 12-13 year olds are fucked up retarded and make the stereotype what it is..
P.S I am 13 too.
I joined Facepunch when a friend posted my YouTube videos on it to get me some more recognition - admittedly, I was terrified that they'd be torn apart, and my stay over as soon as it had begun. But rather, FP is actually a well-maintained, generally incredibly friendly and practically unstoppable force for good, providing praise and constructive criticism that - I think - helped me get better at what I love to do.
So no, FP has great quality control. If anything, it simply has a natural balance of quality. If something'ss good, then the community will come together to support it. If something needs work, then the community will work with its creator to make it better. If someone acts stupidly, then they are ignored. They don't get to join the community.
In 2006 you could get banned for being banned.
It was still pretty bad until 08ish or even 09.
I think garry should bring back smartness, It made me go from "lolf as wgaa" To hey, What's up?
I haven't been on this forum for long, but I think this forum is extremely laid-back.
I have come from a forum which has become complete trash in the last few years because of too much quality control, so I know how you feel. As I mentioned, I haven't been here for long so I can't comment on any changes that have occurred but I do feel that this forum is great in terms of strictness.
Image Macro bans are rather harsh, don't mind quality controls as stuff like "looollz xD" "ICANHAZCHEEZBURGER" is not funny. Also could someone explain this smartness or instaban system? Never heard of it (being '10 member and lurked in '09 so don't know anything about this).
