Don't be. The same thing happened to me months ago were I let the feelings go after a year and told her. It didn't go so well. We fell out. But then, out of the blue, we start talking again. Now she's my girlfriend.
Here's my advice: Never give up hope, but don't limit yourself to just your hope. Being single and exploring life is great. Not to mention, you've changed the landscape of how you guys feel about each other [U]drastically[/U] by telling her how you feel, a smart thing to do. She now has to deal with the fact that there are/were mutual feelings between you two, even if she's falling for another guy. If you want to seem like a viable option, you should try to run away from the potential of friendzone as fast as possible. Get your swag on, be attractive.
In case of failure of recovery? Choose to either backburner your feelings, or tell them to go away. I've had to that with mine before, and it REALLY helps.
And most importantly some advice for yourself, something that I learned. I told my girlfriend that I was sorry that we never got together a while ago because I was too nervous to ask her, that she was out of my leauge. She told me that she was actually much more nervous me and she would have been too awkward to have a relationship, and nothing really would have formed. We probably would have drifted apart if I told her how I feel. The decisions that you have made in the past have brought you where you are today, and where you will be tomorrow. Who knows, if you had gone for her in the beginning, things would have failed spectacularly, and your could have been relationship would have been gone in a month. You have something right now. I'm currently Human Resources in the Army, but I'm working on commissioning as a Signal officer.
Intelligence is a hard job to get, especially in the AF.
I wouldn't worry. Just keep living life as if nothing was changing, and if things don't work because of it, so be it. Roll with the punches.
