It found use that in the event of a Warsaw Pact advance, Harrier's could take off and land in ad-hoc bases built into dense German woodland. [t]http://www.fourfax.co.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/1976_b-osborne_field_deployments_016.jpg[/t] Pretty neat really.
the B will never be more than STOVL in practice because it can't take off vertically while loaded and fully fueled
And that really is perfectly fine. STOVL is already way better than CATOBAR for a number of reasons, VTOL would just be better.
I was actually at Fairford and saw this, it was the loudest thing on all day. As to the reason why it didn't do more, I'd imagine it was most likely due to them having an F-22 on earlier, as well as a F-35A. Combine that with a tight schedule and the red arrows pretty soon after. The F-22 is pretty sweet to watch at airshows, it's a shame this year it borked with what looked like a software issue, so they had to land it early. I did see the F-22 the previous time I went to Fairford in 2010 though and it was a shame they didn't finish their display this year. I suppose I should dump some of the quick crops I made for someone, of some photos we took from sunday: [T]http://i.imgur.com/LAWrM9k.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/7fy3xVr.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/BYUdVo2.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/8Av3928.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/ibWgLvD.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/NR67jSe.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/strNtNd.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/wMiLXmR.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/1itIz34.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/aYUa8QM.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/6wKX4Uo.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/Aqj3O3q.jpg[/T] [T]http://i.imgur.com/YB6ZoBU.jpg[/T] In order thats an Osprey, F-22, F-35A with a P-51, MiG 29, Airbus A400M, Red Arrows with the F-35B and Two Eurofighters. The F-35B hovering around and the Red Arrows doing airshow things.
Ive seen both a harrier and an f-35 do vertical take offs. The f-35 is far more stable then a harrier will ever be. [editline]14th July 2016[/editline] F-35 is also the second loudest plane I've heard in my life, the first being a b-1
I think people comparing it to the Harrier don't appreciate how much better the lift fan system is. The harrier had a reputation of being dangerous and fairly limited in its hover, it often would suck in its engine exhaust and cause an engine stall which gave rise to the lift fan system. Boeing's JSF prototype was basically just an ugly stealth harrier but suffered from a similar problem (on top of a non finalized design) which led to lockheeds being picked.
We should still keep the A-10's, though.
Yeah, I never understood why they'd be doing this, especially nowadays when a lot of fighting is against poorly armed insurgents. What's the point in using something incredibly expensive when you just want to bomb a shitty house filled with terrorists, not wipe out a tank battalion? Hell even a Skyraider would do the job in wars like Afghanistan
The tech innovations of today make the past looks so bad oh...
Really dude? I know as a civilian two jets taking off vertically might look exactly identical to you but do you understand the kind of electronics, speed, carrying capacity and stealth capabilities the F-35 has over a 40 year old Harrier? I mean why do people think VTOL is a gimmick? In a war scenario you're not always going to have a 2km runway to takeoff from, you're combining the versatility of a chopper with the combat capabilities of a fighter jet.
When I saw a harrier do vertical take off it wobbled like crazy. When I saw an F-35 do vertical take off it literally just went straight up and hovered in place without moving. The F-35's VTOL capability is so much more advanced then the harrier that its not really comparable.

I know one of them did. Heard a woman behind me say "Pfft, well that's awfully American." as the announcer was talking about the stealth features it was supposed to be showing and you could see the plane just fly off into the distance. All this coolness- but it has a cost, and that's complexity.

So I imagine they used the 2nd one (they had two sitting around). The F-35A was the one they had flying around earlier with the P-51 (it has the bulge on the side for the cannon)

I was just stating that the f-35 is not that amazing. and I am not your typical civi which knows nothing about planes... Have pilots license, Was in the beginning of fighter pilot program in Australia but due to the foot I was born with I had to drop out.

Kinda wished I made the time to visit Farnborough this year. It gets better every year but this year would probabaly the most game changing one of the decade with shitloads of new airliners and planes.
I remember going to the 'Warbirds over Wanaka' show in NZ as an 11yo (March, 2002).. I somehow got a behind the scenes pass because I kept asking so many questions to some of the people. There was a row of ribbon between wooden pegs not far from the taxi-way, and I stood in a vacant slot as a Spitfire Mk XVI moved there to park - I was 20metres off centre as it approached. One of the most intimate moments I've had with an aircraft; It was so loud and powerful.
