Being an Alpha male isn't about putting everyone else down. It's about being the best, and when someone challenges you for that title, you step up to challenge them. Some people do it through physical fighting. Some people do it with insults. Some people tell jokes and win the crowd (win the crowd = win the discussion), and so on.
Alpha males aren't just walking meatheads, they have to be intelligent as well. We don't walk around proclaiming our superiority. I don't walk into parties at apartments and say out loud "Hey everyone, I'm better than you all." None of that needs to be said because they can see it themselves. They know by the way I am holding myself up and acting that I am an Alpha male. I don't insult people unless they've insulted me/are an idiot/are fat girls. You kids are too caught up on that to get past it.
If anything, Alpha males will be the ones that invent interstellar space travel. There's more than one type of Alpha male, you kids need to realize that you don't need to be a douche/guido or whatever to be classified as an alpha male. I'm a decent sized dude, but I'm definitely no meathead. I'm also pretty ugly. However, I'm smart, strong, funny, and confident. Ingredients that make up Alpha males.

Our brains haven't changed all too much since we've moved out of caves. Despite all of our technological and cultural advances, we are still humans, we are still animals. We are still driven by primal urges to survive and reproduce. The people that don't have these urges are a very small minority.
If we're all past the "dominant male" thing, why do we need leaders? If we're all equal to each other, why do we expect someone to take charge of groups of people, whether it's a small workgroup or an entire country? The bottom line is that a heirarchy still exists today. The majority of the population (Beta males and females) lack the ability to make decisions for themselves, so they look up to leaders (Alpha males) for guidance. You must remember that not all leaders are voted for. When you join a group for a school project and one of the kids steps up and starts directing everything, he is proclaiming himself as the Alpha male of the group.
Denial is expected, though. A lot of Beta males have a hard time accepting that they are Beta males, so they spew crap about how they'd prefer to not be cavemen and whatnot, not understanding at all what an actual Alpha male is. Dumbass jocks and whatnot are not Alpha males because they lack intelligence. Nerdy-but-cool kids are not Alpha males because they lack physical ability. True Alpha males have a combination of all positive traits.
