Bought a loaf of bread, a bag of ham, and a pack of mountain dew.
I want a turkey sandwich now god dammit.
Storm isn't even fully over us in new york yet and already my bathroom and basement are leaking/flooding. fan-freaking-tastic.
wind is starting to pick up here there's a 40ft tree across my building that's begging to come in :(
Hurricane Charlie was a Category 4 when it hit. I don't see anyone making the comparison here, or even acting like it would be nearly as devastating. That said, I keep encouraging people to remember that Florida and much of the South are ready for storms like this. You guys anticipate it because it's a fact of life down there. Up in the Northeast, we are far more equipped for dealing with blizzards, not hurricanes. Even a Category 1 storm can wreak havoc, especially when the ground is full to bursting with water already.
True true, I'm just trying to say that it shouldn't be really really bad. Then again I've never lived up north. Everyone just seems to me that they think this is going to destroy everything.

Everyone just seems to me that they think this is going to destroy everything.
Most people are concerned about the flooding (the ground up here is already saturated) and the very real risk of very large trees crashing into our homes/cars. We don't think it's the apocalypse, but it could be bad nonetheless.

Around Houston on all the major interstates have barriers that they can slide over and open up all highway lanes to outbound traffic for when we need to get the hell outta dodge. [editline]28th August 2011[/editline] Also, 9 deaths I hear.
i wish you guys good luck!
I hear people going into the basements rather than up, which kinda concerns me.
Well, it depends. If you live on the upper part of a hill, flooding won't be much of a concern. However, trees could be a problem so people will avoid the upper parts of the house. Then of course, there's the exact opposite.

Just have to cut down dead ones before hurricane season and keep an eye out for dense trees that won't flex easy. We sat in our garage and listened to the battery radio watching pine trees blow side to side during Ike. Was kinda soothing in a way. Though Oak trees can be a problem.
Christ, here come the winds.
Best of wishes East Coast! It's pretty warm in California. :(

Also we have no basements, so even during hurricanes we lack most flooding problems.
In Massachusetts here. I have DirecTV so I know it will be out for the next 24 hours or so once the outher bands start to hit. I'm gonna curl up on my couch for next 2 days with popcorn, ice cream, doritos, slim jims, and a nice blanket and watch Star Trek TNG on Netflix.
It's certainly started to pick up in CT. :v:
It's certainly started to pick up in CT. :v:
Yeah, gusts are up to 27mph. To think that we're expecting up to 70mph...jeez. If I suddenly stop posting, you all can probably figure out what happened.
All's calm and dry on the west v:v:v [editline]27th August 2011[/editline] Good luck everyone!
Power is fucked, got my iPad so I should be good for about a day. All the stores were out of generators /cry. We're using the battery backup for my desktop to charge our phones. I'm bundled up in my porch with a butt load of candles, an iPad, and a shit load of booze. Ridin' out the storm like a bawse.
I find it funny that there are people outside of my apartment
Western Mass here. I'm still waiting. It is supposedly going to be hitting us this morning/afternoon.
I'm going to head off. I'll be back in the morning to check up on the damage (or hopefully lack-thereof) in NYC.
I find it funny that there are people outside of my apartment
Some people think they're being cool when they do stuff like that. I call them idiots.
Just playing Team Fortress 2 until my power goes out/I get tired. Poughkeepsie, New York here; checking Wunderground every so often to see what's going on. Nothing serious outside except heavy rain.
Well, just heard the first tree fall for my area. Suddenly, I'm no longer all that enthused about the storm coming on.
So we've managed to push the water back around 4-5 feet in our backyard during this short lull. The "real" hurricane hasn't technically even arrived yet. I think I prefer the blizzards
Wind's starting to get alarmingly strong. Looks like it's time to play a round of Hard Rain in L4D2 before the power inevitably goes out.
Worst part about no power is no AC :(
My power is on its last legs, so good night (or morning or whatever) to you all and best of luck.
Nothing.
So has it hit anywhere yet?
Its raining pretty hard right now in Brooklyn but nothing too bad. Still have power and everything
