[editline]27th August 2011[/editline]
Not close enough to be victim to the storm surge, my house is like 50 feet above sea level anyway, but close enough to have every fucking thing in my yard thrown at my house. Clean up is gonna be fun once the storm's over.
If you can, go outside right now and bring any potential projectiles inside or to a safer area.
Would I be alright ~30 miles west of Boston? I'm pretty sure nothing will happen, but at the very least I'm expecting rain.
Rain and tree debris probably. Maybe moderate flooding depending on the topography of the area.
We got a lot of the missiles waiting to happen out of the yard earlier, I'm just worried about all these huge, old ass cedar trees. For some reason, if any tree in our yard falls it has to fall directly at the house. I've actually been hit by the roof buckling under a tree in a hurricane one year. Scared the living shit out of me.

That can't be right?

Well, we're stocked on enough liquid to last through the apocalypse.
Rain and tree debris probably.
Fuck. Well, we're stocked on enough liquid to last through the apocalypse. I'm at the bottom of a hill, better prepare my body.
Bottom of a hill? If you have a basement, get EVERYTHING valuable to a higher ground.
Up in Portland Maine, pretty sure I'm all set. However I'm also prepared to lose power. I guess we'll find out.
According to this one it won't even hit me. That can't be right?
The red shows the possible path of the eye of the storm. It's pretty much going to hit you no matter what at this point. The question is how strong will it be when it gets there.
The red shows the possible path of the eye of the storm. It's pretty much going to hit you no matter what at this point. The question is how strong will it be when it gets there.
Oh okay. So I just won't be hit by the very centre.
Bottom of a hill? If you have a basement, get EVERYTHING valuable to a higher ground.
Not exactly bottom of a hill, but we do usually get a few inches of flooding whenever the rain is hard enough. More like halfway up a hill, but the part I'm on is really long.
Not exactly bottom of a hill, but we do usually get a few inches of flooding whenever the rain is hard enough. Combine that with the already saturated ground around here, and we're in for a lot of flooding.
Oh okay. So I just won't be hit by the very centre.
By the looks of it you're going to get hit by the northwest side of it. Won't get the eye but you'll get plenty of rain and wind.
Well at least I'm ontop of the hill. My Grandma's house is right on the Waterfront though, I hope it doesn't flood.
I've been helping my Brother and Dad with cleaning out our yard, along with getting a generator, and getting first-aid kits and food/water in the basement.
I've been helping my Brother and Dad with cleaning out our yard, along with getting a generator, and getting first-aid kits and food/water in the basement.
Basement's are not necessarily a good place in hurricanes. I'd avoid them. If there's a way in water will find it. If you're going to stay in the basement put everything that you don't want to loose high up.
Frederick MD isn't getting anything but thunderstorms lasting about three hours. It would have been sort of fun to get some fast winds, but I guess I'm glad we won't have to evacuate. I'd be really depressed if I lost my computer. It's one of my favorite things. Oh fuck, what's that rumbling sound?
Upstate new york here. I'm not. Hurricanes are overrated, high winds are fake
Anyone here getting evac'd? Hope it doesn't happen to me
Currently on the south shore of Long Island, waiting to hear tomorrow morning if we have to leave or not. Didn't do too much besides clean up the yard of anything that could get picked up by the winds and get some supplies for a few days.
I'm preparing for the lack of plumbing by shitting in the neighbor's bushes.
No one from the East coast is going to reply, they're all at the FEMA [del]detention[/del] emergency centers at the moment.
Southern Maine here, no real preps but stocking some food and water for when we lose power. Oh, and in Maine tradition against any form of adverse weather, I've heeded the order to fix bayonets.

May it be kind to them. http://thinkprogress.org/green/2011/08/25/304366/hurricane-irene-threatens-new-york-city-with-deadly-storm-surge/ This map shows the evacuation zones for Manhattan and Brooklyn. The flood map is about the same. If it's colored there's a chance it will be underwater on Sunday.
Cell phones not gonna work. Where abouts are you?
Massachusetts.
Massachusetts.
Generally your cell phone won't work for a few days. Keep it charged and off. Turn it on every couple hours to see if service is back. Usually if power is out then it's not going to work as power will also be out for near by cell towers.
I'm on Long Island, and as far as I know it's not going to be THAT bad. No need to evacuate form my apartment, seeing as though it's on a hill, so flooding isn't a problem. I hope. So yeah, just hunkering in for the storm.

Tape them up with masking tape and remove any window mounted AC units unless you plan on getting a new one.
Florida lucked out, but my mom had gotten water jugs and canned food. We have shutters attached to our windows so it's really easy to close them if any storms were to come last minute.

Shutters and a Generac backup generator, plus stocks of water, food, and ice = give me your best shot, mother nature.
