The desire to mate is hard coded into us at birth, what constitutes a mate is chosen during childhood, Abnormal childhoods can produce anomalies in mate choosing behaviors. For instance some women who are abused as children simply refuse to have sex ever as they associate that with pain and anguish. But at no time was the choice conscious. It was simply chosen for him by hormonal changes and outside influences.
