Also, my main problem with anything like this is that you may like sharks, you may like path of exile, and if you like both, there's no need to combine the two. I think you are missing the point here. Saying that is comparing apples to oranges since anthropomorphic characters are just not simply made out to be regular animals. If you hadn't noticed, furries tend to have clear distinctions from real animals so I don't get where you are getting this idea from. Also, most furries are cartoon-like and only take certain features from real animals.

Let's put it this way, say you play Skyrim and come across a Kajiit or an argonian, do you just see them as cats/lizards with the only difference being they are walking on two legs? If you do then I suggest you take a closer look at what makes them more human than animal. But really, you'll probably notice that you see them as just another race and accept them to be different than your local house cat or monitor lizard.

I wouldn't say so, really. I'm not into anything furry myself but the way I have always seen it is that it's more of applying animal characteristics to a human body and mind, is it not? You could easily say "a dog that walks on two legs is still a dog" but what if the dogs speak human language, and can think and function in an identical way to humans? Furry characters seem much more human than animal to me, and that seems pretty distant from zoophilia.

As long as we're articulating issues with furry characters, here's my thoughts--furry porn is whatever, it is what it is and I think anyone who gets worked up about it needs to grow up and find something to care about that actually matters.

Weirdly it's the "clean" furry art that I have more of an issue with, maybe just because it's more visibly in my sphere, since I'm interested in webcomics and illustration and stuff. I think there's a lot of instances where animal or animalistic characters can be used to great effect--Looney Tunes and Disney have done it, obviously, and so have a lot of cartoonists and illustrators. This comic I stumbled on the other day, [url=http://www.westerndeep.net/]Beyond the Western[/url], has a really nice visual style and the weasel people fit right in. [url=http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IVz6eiQYukI/TGRdfWiTOHI/AAAAAAAAE9c/bZmSo9fdYoc/s1600/10.jpg]Blacksad[/url] manages it in a very classically Disney way, as well. And [url=http://www.lackadaisycats.com/comic/1361158342.jpg]Lackadaisy[/url] is great with how it uses goofy cat people to soften what is often a pretty dark story. So does [url=http://cheapthrills.xepher.net/]Cheap Thrills[/url], for that matter.

BUUUTTT, there's a lot of instances where furry characters feel really shoehorned into the subject matter. They feel like they're there not because they serve a useful artistic purpose, but because the artist has a weird fixation on them. It doesn't even really matter if it's a sexual fixation or not, when an artist puts their own obsessions above the needs of the story. It's usually easy to spot--TwoKinds (which I remember FP being pretty hot about a while back) is like that. There's just a few too many instances of "oh!! I didn't know you were in here naked!!" and giant dragons hitting on people to ignore. It ends up giving the whole comic kind of an uncomfortable, sleazy vibe, even when it's LESS sexually explicit than, say, Blacksad.

So animal people in a work because they're useful tools for the artist is fine, animal people in a work because the author is just super into them and isn't interested in anything unless it has furries, that's just self-indulgence and often comes off as creepy to non-furries (and probably some furries with, you know, a modicum of self-awareness).

i think its kind of like the uncanny valley, at a certain point it gets too furry and sexualised and thats when it starts to creep you out

Actually one thing that's worth mentioning in Blacksad in particular (since it's pretty adult) is that when there's a female character, especially one that's supposed to be seen as "sexy" by the audience, the artist really dials down the animalistic characteristics.

Notice how the men have often grotesque animal heads, but the hero's girlfriend is basically just a human woman with cat ears and a black triangle on her nose. She doesn't even have a tail.
