If they are making it they should just announce HL3 is dead then work on it.
Kill all expectations for it so they are free to be as lazy as they want with it.
The best part about the amount of time it's been since a half life game is that people jump the gun and assume that the next half life game will be called half life 3 simply because it's taken so long.
I still think they'll call it Episode 3.
You are correct in saying there is little doubt that the game will be good, but the longer it takes, the higher the expectations get because people (falsely) assume that the reason it is taking so long is for quality, but evidence shows that is not true.
Like I said though, it's someones personal fault if they think that since 2007 Valve has been nonstop developing a grand masterpiece of a sequel.
Anyone who is bitter should get over it, it's a videogame and it will be released when Valve thinks it's time.

I love the way GoldSrc and Source games handle. The response to keyboard and mouse input has always felt incredibly tight.
people said this about half life 2
Half-Life 2 took 6 years.
Half-Life 3 is taking even longer.

If they ever announced episode 3 there would be violence. If they take a over decade and all they release is another episode rather than a full game people would be pissed.
Yeah Gabe was keen on the idea of episodic releases back in the day but those sorts of marketing experiments are what Valve's really been known for lately. Rather than continuing with Half-Life episodic releases because Gabe said they would like... 8 or so years ago I think you're more likely to see inspiration with Team Fortress 2, DotA 2 and CS:GO's market success.

I mean yeah I get what you're saying but rather than releasing ep 3 to end the trilogy I think they're more likely to focus on creating a new Half Life that's able to standalone without needing to play the earlier games. It's been over a decade, and you want newcomers to be able to enjoy it too.
This kinda reminded me of GooseGoose's talks on HL2 and the episodes.
Man I could listen to that guy forever.

Releasing Half Life 2: Episode 3 more than 7 years after the last episode would be a terrible marketing move.
Valve's corporate structure (or lack thereof) is probably to blame for Half-Life 3 being as dead as it is. Nobody wants to disappoint the fans who have been waiting all this time, so nobody wants to work on it.
It'll either end up being a Team Fortress 2 or a Duke Nukem Forever
Their current marketing model is based off free2play games, Steam itself, and doing the same thing tripwire is doing; buying the IP rights for mods, and turning them into games.
Valve has only two original concepts, Half Life, Portal, and Left 4 Dead (maybe, seeing as how 90% of the alpha/beta content was CS:S content)
Also seeing as how they tried to put a microtransaction system into Portal 2 doesn't give me very high hopes for Portal 3, or Half Life 3

There is nothing at all that suggests it will be called Half life 3, and that doesn't even make much sense. It doesn't fit in with how Valve have named the previous games and the next one is still going to be part of the Half life 2 story, so it will have Half life 2 in the name. Half life 3 will be used for a completely new story arc.

The name of the game doesn't affect the amount of content it has. They aren't going to make a new game where you don't need to play the earlier games, the Half life 2 story isn't over and the next game is going to finish it. It's not going to be a completely new story. All the HL1 games have Half life in the name, All the HL2 games have HL2 in the name. It would not make sense for the HL2 story arc to go HL2, EP1, EP1, HL3.

It wouldn't be a half life thread without the guru trying to proovr everyone wrong

I think you guys are overseeing the fact that Source 2 is being developed and that's why HL3 takes rather long.

Half-Life 2 has aged so incredibly well. Looks like a game that could have been released this decade.
I wonder what new innovations Source 2 will make.

I wouldn't be.
What do they expect from it anyway?
It's been like, what? Almost 10 years since HL2? And it's been 7 for Ep. 2. Jesus...

I remember when they claimed they would release an episode every 6 months for 18 months total for the whole trilogy. Ahahahahahahaha
:(
ahh mister ahoy, your buttery smooth vocal emissions are something i can listen & learn too for hours
I recently replayed HL2 in an achievement run for nostalgia. It was still so good!
I'd do the same with HL1 but that's on an old Steam account I longer have the login details for and no cash to spare to rebuy, sigh

Considering the countless internal leaks, and the fact that whenever an employee makes a joke about it (see any tour video from valve) they use the terminology HL3 or Half-Life 3, I think it's safe to say it's Half-Life 3.

Half Life 2 didn't look like it does now at launch, though. But yeah, it's still a pretty swell looking game.
The most annoying part is that there has been no updates on the progress at all.
I wouldn't mind waiting long time for a great game to be made, only if you actually let people know you are working on it.
Valve could just as well have stopped working on the whole HL series entirely after one of the the VA died and how would anyone know?

That was the VA for Dr. Breen.
Damn, this channel is fucking amazing, can't believe I've never heard of it.

Half-Life mods were so innovative. I think Master Sword: Continued was one of the only RPG mods that did so well in emulating the combat experience of RPG's like Morrowind.
