I was hoping 60fps would be the standard by now. Can't give any impressions other then wow what a tiny alley that was so far, wasn't really the best footage to show imo
The issue with the tiny alleyway is that its based on one of the worst areas to live in London during the 19th Century. First gameplay shows an uprising being suppressed by the Order.
It's really weird watching something that looks so good play exactly like the original Gears of War.
cover based third person shooter with a 30fps lock. if it came to PC I might pay attention to it. Since it's not, well, I'm not seeing any reason to purchase a PS4 when I have my PC capable of running most games that are being released for 'next' gen, when next gen doesn't even seem like it's coming yet.
Potential sequels to games like Crash, Jak, The Last of Us, Motorstorm, Red Dead Redemption etc? inFAMOUS Second Son? Driveclub? Uncharted 4? The Last Guardian? New IP from God of War dev? New RPG from Killzone dev? Kingdom Hearts 3? New game from littlebigplanet/tearaway dev? Final Fantasy XV? Resogun? Deep Down? Rime? Shadow of the Beast? Everybody's Gone to the Rapture? Gran Turismo 7? Endless JRPGS? ᴷᶦᶫᶫᶻᵒᶰᵉ ⁵ And this is just things that have been announced in the first few months of the PS4 coming out, there's still another 4-6 years of new games and sequels to existing ones to look forward to. It's a PlayStation console. Tons of good exclusive games are inevitable, just think of the PS1, PS2, and PS3. Even the PSP has it's fair share.
It's really weird watching something that looks so good play exactly like the original Gears of War.
better to go with something that works rather than end up risking a failed game by experimenting.
better to go with something that works rather than end up risking a failed game by experimenting.
Something that works can fail too. Spec Ops The Line is a good example. Amazing story, super boring cover based shooter.
better to go with something that works rather than end up risking a failed game by experimenting.
Well, yes and no. I would prefer games that are overly ambitious or experimental that end up not succeeding as the ol' tried and true, but I also understand and respect that it's not exactly financially viable to do so. Experimentation usually ends up coming after you've established yourself and you have a healthy cash flow (basically Ubisoft's business model).
Something that works can fail too. Spec Ops The Line is a good example. Amazing story, super boring cover based shooter.
that was partly due to bad marketing, trying to appeal to the average cod/gow crowd while having a story that's "deep"
Just because it's a cover based game from the third person perspective doesn't mean it's not going to have freshness to it. If you read up you'll see it's actually quite creative what they're doing. The weapons are interesting, kinda Ratchet and Clankish, and the game is using softbody physics as an important part of gameplay which I dont think has ever been done before. (different from half life 2 before people mention that)
The Combo Gun The bread and butter of The Order’s arsenal. The combo gun has two different functions. The rifle component of the gun is good for gunning down foes from a distance. The other barrel delivers a concussive blast that knocks foes back like a Force push. Stunned enemies can then be picked off with rifle fire.

The Arc Gun This high-voltage weapon is where things start to get more experimental. The arc gun has electric wires and components spread along its long metal rods. Electrical current zaps along this contraption as it warms up, creating a Jacob’s Ladder. This piece of bleeding edge technology shakes and smokes as it charges up a precise, long-distance bolt of energy. The way it zaps towards far off targets reminds us of Cole’s eagle-eyed lightning blast from Infamous.

The Thermite Rifle The thermite rifle is the flashiest and most devastating of the bunch Ready At Dawn has revealed so far. Pellets packed with strips of aluminum iron oxide are blasted into the environment, which then break open into a cloud of glittery metal paper. A high temperature flare is then shot into the cloud, creating a chemical reaction that turns the cloud into a burning mass of melting metal. This devastating weapon is perfect for punishing enemies hiding behind cover.

Fragmentation Grenades Everybody knows how grenades work – pull the pin and throw it before it blows up. The Order’s grenades are a little different than average. These thrown explosives resemble the handled “potato masher” grenades usually used by German troops. It also features a small spike that allows it to be stuck into walls or the floor, creating a nasty proximity mine.
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2013/10/30/the-weapons-and-gadgets-of-the-order-1886.aspx Apparently metal, wood, etc will bend and break realistically and there will be puzzles involving magnetic weapons to bend metal pipes and whatnot, and you can imagine using magnetic weapons to fight the enemies by shooting them while they are near metal objects. Like an inverted gravity gun. Also it has werewolves.
that was partly due to bad marketing, trying to appeal to the average cod/gow crowd while having a story that's "deep"
It is hard to advertise it as something else since gameplay looks standard.
I'd like to think that the game breaks off into more open environments, allowing for more interesting gameplay than the standard cover based shooter; i.e Gears of War 1 through however the fuck. Otherwise, the variety in enemies and, weapons better be top notch. As for the visuals, saying it's graphically impressive doesn't really say enough. A 30 fps lock, especially for an early next gen title is reasonable. Look at early titles from last gen, like Kameo, Gun, or Oblivion. By the end/middle of this console generation chances are the standard will be 1080p, 60fps or higher.
Hardware should be capable of 1080p/60fps though.
It's more than capable of it, but they also have to keep in mind how hard they push the rest of the visuals. To get 1080p/60fps, chances are good you're going to be making a trade off somewhere else, whether it be in texture resolution, shader detail, polygon count, lighting, or animation detail. The Order seems to work well at 30fps though; it preserves that "filmic" look, and it allows for 1080p with 4xAA which is unheard of for a console.

Any decent console is capable of 1080p/60fps with crappy graphics, that much is clear.
