Cut your hair or settle for something like this: or (but tuck it all in)
You don't have to wear hair nets if you wear hats. Anyways, you either need to convince him to let you put your hair up since girls can do it or do as he says. He may have grounds to fire you due to health codes, plain and simple. Or, go to his boss and get their view on the situation.
But you said the women only have to tie their hair back.. I hope I never end up going to the restaurant you work at [editline]04:44PM[/editline] Also just cut your hair, looks much better
I started working at a hotel while in college and I had the short chinbeard thing. They told me I'd have to be clean shaven to work there, the money was good, so I did it. Then about a month in they hire a new female manager who, I shit you not, had noticeable lip and chin hair, and they didn't say anything to her (as far as I know). Discrimination I say!
I hear ya, OP. I also have a friend who's a cook, just like you, who has long hair and all, but he was never bitched at because of his hair. I might add I have long hair too... but I work in the IT business; as long as I keep it in a ponytail, it's all good :smug: [editline]09:32PM[/editline] Oh and, to all the hipsters saying "hurr durr get a haircut", FUCK YOU.

Oh and OP, I suggest cutting your hair. You can (probably) grow it back eventually and it is a good idea to avoid pissing off your boss.
why do you care if you're singled out it's not like tucking in your hair affects you
You work in a restaurant, it is an OHS issue. FFS
I work at a restaurant as a line cook and I've been there for a few months now. I am an 18 year old male, and I have pretty long hair, about halfway down my back. I was hired with my hair this long obviously, and the manager who hired me said that if I tied it in a ponytail and wore a hat, it was fine. There are a couple female cooks there with long hair and they do the same thing. Just recently another manager came back who has been gone for about six months. The first day I work with him, he tells me that I need to tuck my hair in my hat or wear a fucking bouffant cap. I'm thinking to myself, "What? Since when was this a rule?" I look in the employee handbook and it says nothing about having to wear a bouffant cap or stuffing your hair into your hat, and rather just says that long hair needs to be tied. The thing that is annoying me though, is the fact that when I'm working with a female with long hair, they don't have to do anything with their hair besides pull it back. I feel like I'm being singled out just because I am male, and its unfair. I even asked my one manager why the other one told me that I have to do this and he said it is so that none of my hair gets in the food. But what makes my hair more likely to get in food than a woman's? Is he allowed to do this or what? :wtf: I don't want to cut my hair or become a tranny, so before anyone suggests that, I'm just putting that out there.
I had hair down to my shoulders when I worked at mcDonalds, all the employees there had hats, but I was the only one with a ponytail and a hairnet, my hair isn't even breaky. Everyone had to wear plastic piercing studs in whichever piercing they had but I wasn't aloud to have any at all, then my nose ring got infected and they told me it was all a joke. So I told them to go fuckthemselves and spilt all the shit in the fryers.
Do you have any idea what a hipster is?

learn what hipster means
I know what a hipster is, do you? Everytime I run into one, the first thing they say is "Hurr durr get rid of the black clothes and the long-ass hair"... "Hurr durr stop looking like a psycho"... "Hurr durr stop being so friggin' weird" I hate 'em [editline]10:12PM[/editline] Anyhow OP, see if you can talk with that other manager about your hair, tell him the other manager had no problem with your hair
I know what a hipster is, do you? Everytime I run into one, the first thing they say is "Hurr durr get rid of the black clothes and the long-ass hair"... That's cool.
I know what a hipster is, do you? Everytime I run into one, the first thing they say is "Hurr durr get rid of the black clothes and the long-ass hair"... Okay [editline]08:15PM[/editline] Also that isn't hipster behavior, that's mainstream behavior
Also that isn't hipster behavior, that's mainstream behavior
'sall the same crap to me, hipsters, goths, whatever Anyhow, you can wear long hair and still have a job, in case you didn't know that
But his job is preparing food. It's understandable for his boss to want him to cut it.
Headbang in your manager's face until he chokes on your flowing locks and dies.
is the fact that when I'm working with a female with long hair, they don't have to do anything with their hair besides pull it back.
This is the sentence that 90% of Facepunch seems to be missing. You are actually protected under gender discrimination laws in this case, albeit indirectly. While different dress codes for males and females isn't discrimination, different safety procedures for both sexes is. If you don't care about this job very much and want to make a point, threaten to report your manager to your local workplace safety authority on the grounds that the females in your workplace are allowed to engage in unsafe working procedures. It's borderline extortion, which is why I said you should only do this if you don't care about the job. However, you likely should have your hair tucked in anyway (as should the females). You're working with food and hot appliances, unprotected hair is a safety risk. I'm taking first-year welding right now and my instructor said that although my long hair shouldn't pose a problem, it's my own damn problem if I go up in flames. It's even a bigger deal for you since you're taking the health of others into your hands with food. Forget what your manager says, exercise some common sense and keep that hair out of the way.
But his job is preparing food. It's understandable for his boss to want him to cut it.
I understand that, but OP's got a point. There's no need to single him out because he's the only dude wearing long hair when he could just wear it like the rest of his female co-workers. His manager is a dick. There are people that have it a lot worse out there than just having to tie their hair back. Grow up, do whatever you need to do with your hair, lots of people out their would love to have your job.

Society as a whole accepts it, except for some of the more conservative places.

Grow up, do whatever you need to do with your hair, lots of people out their would love to have your job.
It doesn't matter if you have long hair or if you shave your head, what matters is that you should get your damn job done. That's what most employers care about.
Other than military, law enforcement, or PR-related jobs, most employers really don't give a shit about long hair. Society as a whole accepts it, except for some of the more conservative places.
Doesn't mean that the employer has to accept it. The manager has power over his employees, and since it seems that the manager has deemed the OP's long hair a problem the OP has to confine to it. Now, if the OP was being treated like shit (not just being told to wear a hairnet) there would be a problem, but he isn't. [editline]06:57PM[/editline]
It doesn't matter if you have long hair or if you shave your head, what matters is that you should get your damn job done.
Yes, that is what i was trying to say.
Yup. It's not like having your hair short is going to make you any better at what you do; if you think about it, there's really no point in arguing about banal stuff like "how you wear and how you're supposed to wear your long hair". If anything, one just makes sure it doesn't get in their way (in OP's case that's more important, in my case it doesn't matter) and that's it. My 2 bosses understand that and they're totally cool with that. Besides... it's just fucking hair, who gives a rat's ass about hair
Doesn't mean that the employer has to accept it.
Again, the issue isn't that his employer has a problem with his hair, it's that he has no problem with the female employees with similar hair.
That's probably because OP's manager enjoys checking out his female coworkers instead of OP... And because of that, they have "certain benefits" :v:
yea it sucks that you gotta cut your hair after it had grown for so long and shit but what's better the job or the hair
yea it sucks that you gotta cut your hair after it had grown for so long and shit but what's better the job or the hair
He doesn't have to cut his hair rated book
When I've worked in resturants, the rule has been that my hair is not allowed to touch my collar. Since my hair came down past my butt at that time, it was a somewhat lengthy procedure of putting it up in a high ponytail, braiding it tightly to reduce the length, then using half a dozen to a dozen bobby pins and two scrunchies to make sure it didn't fall out during the day. Are you aware of any of your hair getting in someone's food? When I first started working, I could just keep it in a ponytail, but after I accidentally got a hair in someone's food, I was told it had to be up and stay up for the entirety of my shift. I was singled out at that restaurant because of that incident, most of my other coworkers never had that happen and were allowed to continue wearing ponytails.
