I feel like the 20px is going to be too big, and to show that I'm gonna write a lot of bullshit just to show how it'll stretch the text weirdly and spam a little bit and make it look awkward is that okay guys? I mean it's not that bad but the longer a post is the more obvious the "stretching" is and it interrupts the flow of the dick ass fuck bitches sentence and really makes it look odd, especially on smaller screen sizes, so it leads to this weird shaped chunk of text that just looks bad and awful and really doesn't help legibility and reading while the smaller (15px-size) emoticons don't do it nearly as badly. To show the difference, here's the same chunk of text with 15px icons:

It doesn't break up the text as much. 20px ones splinter it up too much, 15px is much better for the "generic smilie face" emotes
15 and 20 look the exact same over here in android land. Not sure about a bigger screen.
I'm on 1366x768 on my laptop and the 20px makes it look almost like a full paragraph break. It looks really bad.
Looks just fine on planet iPhone.
What about 16px instead
What about 16px instead
Then there is no center pixel which is pretty useful when making them

I do quite like this style of emote too:
Not so much that other style.
this needs to be animated and it would be perfect
There'd have to be at least two so they can shake irregularly though, like at https://youtu.be/8ZtGDSZie5I?t=1m8s.

Okay, 17px
Use the funny rating as base

15x15, consistent with the FP themes

Here, I fixed the size issues.

Edit: Downs:
Funny rating looks a little faded. Did the ":P" funny icon from like 5 years ago have any different of a style?
In a lot of the alternative styles, there just doesn't seem to be enough contrast between the colors, it's hard to make out the facial expressions from a quick glance. The SA emoticons looked nice because they were black outlines on a very light face.

This is FPs new lorem ipsum
[editline]12th July 2015[/editline]
I made a normal smiley by mirroring the left side, kept eye position

The smile is a bit funky and it may be a bit too darkish in the middle
Here's some more:
Been trying to do that with the emotes I posted earlier, would highly appreciate your feedback on those as well Postal.
It's a nice and unique style, I'm just waiting for more than one option before I go commiting to something.
Also I wonder how emots styled after the FP logo would look? All red and white like and maybe also with the x eyes. Probably not good but idk someone could try it and maybe it'd be kewl.

Well a straight up color swap looks pretty crappy

Would probably look better with antialiasing or something like that
YOu can't get the crosses into 15x15 decently, the eyes boil down to 4 pixels

Quick mockup.
It's not bad but I think a "standard" approach of yellow emotes would be nicer.

Here's eng101 (Now in Facepunch red!):
I'm not sure what other smilies need to be made, other than the animated ones.

I really like the 5th one. It looks the most pronounced.

It is interesting, but you're probably right about yellow being best.
I think maybe what we could do here is give this another day to see if anyone else doesn't make a new style for the emoticons, then put up a poll for people to vote on what they'd like. So far we've got three styles, if you count the FP logo style. Picking between them is tricky tho right now I'm kinda leaning towards the funny rating style just because it is at least original to the forum already and would give easy consistency (as in new ratings would match to it instead of us having to swap it out with something new) but I'm by no means set on any thing yet.
so yeah, let's get some more style experiments going. Granted there's only so much you can do with a yellow face but hey who knows maybe someone will come up with something we all like best.

Also I love this
Put several styles into use maybe, the final decision will be made by usage anyway, even within the results of the poll.
Also that keeps things open for surprises since it doesn't limit the designs .
Figured out how to make gifs in Photoshop, here's Tinfoil:
