Facepunch Donates to TFYC - Raise $2k, Design a Character!
Ratings are just about the only thing we have over other forums. Could we have a pair of conjoined twins who constantly argue about everything or does that count as two characters?
Rating-badges stuck to backpack or scarf? Sorta like weird teen girls do?
I think we should reach consensus on what the gender of our character will be before we start deciding on things like appearance and personality.

Male obviously
Having a waifu character would just make us look like we're copying /v/ (Like what Reddit did)

A girl? Because it's a trend.
Transgender would be trying too hard. 4chan and Reddit already were accused of being hypocritical, I see no reason to push it. Plus designing a specifically transgender character? How is that even possible without being stereotypical and implying that MtF are in some way radically different from other women in terms of appearance. Let it be JUST a girl. With no further investigation under her skirt.

We're not copying, we're joining the trend/bandwagon. There's nothing wrong with that. Plus there's an advantage with designing a female character: viewed as predominantly male communities we show that we can design a female character without it being stupid, offensive or stereotypical. Well, not counting Reddit, that is.
I feel like I've no right to join the discussion, I still haven't donated yet. I should really scrap some money to throw at it already.
I really like /v/'s mascot. Not Vivian but before her /v/ used to represent themselves as a very generic young looking guy with no hair or any distinctive facial features that always had a pissed off expression and "/v/" written on his shirt.
It's very simple and represents /v/ perfectly.
[editline]4th September 2014[/editline]
Also Vivian got hijacked by tumblr pretty much anyway.
I'd donate $10 but i've only got $4 in my account. Fuck.

This is a great idea though, but let's focus on raising the money before we start designing a character.

I don't see why you can't make a male character that looks good.
The entire premise of Vivian is there's a strong "mai waifu" culture thing in /v/. We don't really have that and I personally don't think it's appropriate to just make a female just to follow a trend. If anything if we make a good male character then we'll stand out.

But that's the thing, we don't have anything strongly gendered about Facepunch, while /v/ does. I really don't like the idea of setting a 'default gender'.
I say we're male so there can be porn of us with the other mascots.
You know we all want that.

There can be porn regardless... and a lot of us, I bet, want it even more.

That is unbelievably hilarious, holy shit I'm laughing so hard in real life. Why doesn't she have arms? What's the fan thing on her head?
[editline]a[/editline]
Jesus christ I'm still laughing, it's like those pictures where someone tries to follow a cooking recipe and ends up with a pile of crust and duct tape.
If 4chan's mascot was hijacked by tumblr fanart and this is reddit's mascot, I really don't want to find out what ours ends up like. I vote for just donating them the money.
If it's a female character we shouldn't go down the cutesy anime girl route like reddit.

hobo female who wears a broken gasmask and has a box for a hat
I think it should be male. We're a predominately male forum anyway. I'm in favour of a tall, skinny shabby dude, messy black hair, hoodie, a scowl, 5 o'clock shadow and a hunched posture. Bags under his eyes, something that represents most of the forum. A bored, tired, apathetic teenager. Consider putting a cigarette in his mouth to further reinforce his apathy.
are we going with my jamie hullett type design, cause I can do that if people want it
How are we planning on deciding this anyway?
strawpoll i guess
http://strawpoll.me/
Like I said before, we won't come to a unanimous decision without some kind of vote. You cannot design a character by committee because they tend to feel (for lack of a better word) flaccid, and even worse; soulless (though this is a community character for Facepunch so that could be considered a good thing). Again, we should get Gastrick/the other people who can draw that aren't Gastrick to do some drawings about what they think it should be, we compile them together into a post in this thread and vote on them with ratings. Reddit and /v/'s characters were made by individuals and then adopted by the community, which is the only way this kind of thing can work. Just shouting out descriptions doesn't get anyone anywhere.
EDIT
And as soon as I post that a straw poll is posted. This could work as well

I think we should get the sketches and then vote on if we want to make changes. Majority rules, not unanimous.

Yeah, agreed. Let's wait for people to dump sketches into this thread, then e can gather them up and vote for them

I would kinda like to have F>M trans character that isn't immediately obvious trans
kinda like "rule63" Poison or Bridget.

The reddit character was made in an anime character creator.
Honestly i think we should go for an androdgynous character, short hair, gasmask shirt, cat in a box.
FP in a nutshell.
FP is known for banning people frequently right? So what if the character was named B. Anne Cooper or something?

That's not a bad idea. Skip the whole gender debate and just make it a bit of both without getting specific. If anyone asks which, just say "who cares?".

That's what I also wanted to suggest. Kinda having TF2's Pyro in mind - something unidentified and unidentifiable.
/v/ and reddit have done this already. Doesn't it feel kind of bandwagon-y to do the same?
well at least it's bandwagoning for a good cause
so just to clarify for you guys: we're donating to a program that gives women the ability to make their own games. what the fuck are we we doing why would we want a woman character
hello??? make it a guy. remind them that we're still the boss here
in fact just make him an obese neckbeard with cheeto stains since nobody has the balls to really showcase the white-knight online demographic
itt people who aren't donating force-feed ideas to people that are

exactly. unisex is never hard to do, and on top of that it's the perfect solution to any kind of gender debate
that being said, a lot of unisex stuff tends to make people believe "male" since the lack of any discerning female features
