why would you want to move from a first world country to a third? doesnt make any sense
Singapore is not a third-world country you derp face.
No Gum for you.
yeah much like no weed for you in places where it's illegal.
You better have some actual reasons for moving.
"The US is getting buttfucked" is one of the worst reasons I've heard for moving from a well developed nation to a poor one.
[editline]7th April 2011[/editline]
I'm not saying there aren't reasons to do so, but this is a lame one.
ATTN: Everyone get your facts straight, Singapore is a developed country.
There's far less under-aged ginger haired girls for you to creep on over there.

oh rly, i had no idea :downs:.
y'know, thats kinda expected from a country with higher population than all of europe combined. and you know why so many people choose to live here? because it's the best country in the world.

Tied for First with Canada.
[editline]7th April 2011[/editline]
Actually no, Canada is first, sorry.
and number 1 in crime rates and obesity
You do realize that the UK is number 2, Germany 3, and France 4, right?
The USA has a population is over 300 million with a 2010 estimate of 11 million reported crimes, while the UK is about 60 million with an estimate of 6 million.
On the obesity, unfortunately, you are correct.
I got food poisoning there, it's pretty nice otherwise.

pissed off? nah, im just concerned about the OP. i guess it's just the american instinct kickin in', we all take care of each other.
i just don't understand his reason to move from the best country in the world to a poor country.

That's pretty subjective.
That's pretty subjective.
i thought it was common knowledge that the us is the best in everything.
if you turn on your TV, what show is on? yes, an american show.
if you turn on your radio, what song is playing? an american song.
if you go to the movie theater, you're going to watch something made in hollywood.
i could do this all day, but i won't because i have other things to do.
do you now understand why we are the best? without the us you'd be stuck with shitty bollywood movies and shitty games made in japan. god bless the US.
USA is getting buttfucked and my family wants to move to Singapore! Just some questions to people who live there:
How is the cost of living compared to America?
In general is it a good place to live?
How is the Internet connection? (:v:)
Any other info as to it would be great!
Move to Canada that way you won't have to sacrifice much.

Again, subjective. Just because you love TV, radio and movies doesn't mean everyone does, and no, not everything you listed is produced exclusively in the US.
Then again that last line makes it pretty clear you're either trolling or just thick.
I have friends who used to live in singapore.
They make nice china pottery.

And what do you get when you mix Japanese concepts with Chinese manufacturing?
[sp]An American thing.[/sp]
Don't immigrants have to sign up for National Service? Any Singaporeans here know more on this?
Sucks to be you OP.

Im watching my local town news right now, and the song im listening to on the radio is by Pink Floyd, your argument is invalid
and number 1 in crime rates and obesity
Would be a good joke if it weren't incorrect on both counts
Don't immigrants have to sign up for National Service? Any Singaporeans here know more on this?
I think if you become a Permanent Resident below the age of [del]21[/del] 15, you are eligible for National Service.
[editline]7th April 2011[/editline]
Otherwise, your sons and their sons will have to go through National Service as well.
So taking up residency in Singapore is serious business.
[editline]7th April 2011[/editline]
However you will be granted ~citizenship~ when you complete your National Service. :toot:
I live in Singapore ; ask me anything.

1) Way higher.
2) Pros & cons ; generally, yes.
You can walk on any street in the middle of the night and not get mugged.
Graffiti is non-existent, crime is rare.
Singapore is a pretty luxurious place if you know where to go. Hermes, Prada, MiuMiu, LV, Tods, Fendi and Burberry stores line up the shopping district. But of course you do get your relatively poorer areas.
Housing & cars are pretty expensive. Unless you're fortunate, don't expect to own a car till you're 24.
3) Pretty good.
People would generally treat you better if you're an American. All Asian girls would just fall for you. All. No kidding.
Honestly, there are better places to live than Singapore. If I were you, I'd rather move to Australia where the climate and culture may be less taxing to accommodate. But if you must, chin up buddy, Singapore isn't bad. It's one of the world's successful economies AFAIK. But I don't feel that a successful economy = a better standard of living, the country is too motherloving hot, and the population is too dense.
Say hi to Autumn for us ('least i'm pretty sure she's there)

Is it true that the Singaporean government is actively trying to suppress other "dialects" of Chinese like Cantonese in favor of Mandarin?
Is it true that the Singaporean government is actively trying to suppress other "dialects" of Chinese like Cantonese in favor of Mandarin?
No idea. But yeah, seems likely.
Cantonese is hardly spoken here ; like near zero. The only Canto-speakers are the pre-war generations. Only Mandarin is taught in schools.
But I wouldn't say they're 'suppressing', more like encouraging Mandarin.

Heh, sounds like what Vancouver's Chinese community is going to be like in 20-30 years. Ugh.
Is it true that the Singaporean government is actively trying to suppress other "dialects" of Chinese like Cantonese in favor of Mandarin?
The government keeps running a never ending series of "Speak Mandarin" and "Speak Good English" campaigns because these are much more useful outside of Singapore unlike the Chinese dialects.
To all the ignorant Americans saying America is the best country in the world, have you actually been to another first world country? Because honestly America's tourist attractions are like the asses of England and Australia.
And FYI, Singapore is much more developed than you think, your assumptions are very Naïve about the place.
and number 1 in crime rates and obesity
Obesity is actually one of the USA's major problems.
This is due to the fact we have many fast food restraunts like McDonalds or Burger King
and no one here cares about what we eat. Some people here die from all that nasty shit in it like going into cardiac arrest from all the Grease in fast food or the salt from pretzels and getting Diabetes from all the sugar in junk food. It just angers me that our country does nothing about it. If i was in control of my country I would ban fast food restraunts. What also saddens me is that the fast food restraunts even try to trick you into thinking some of they're food is healthy, when it's actually not. A salad at McDonalds has as many calories as a Big Mac. They even refuse to put the nutriton facts on menus because they are afraid they'll lose customers. The kids in here also get fat from school lunches due to the major lunch provider company Sodexho. About 70% of America uses this company.
Also, have you guys ever seen Supersize Me?
here we go again
