Here's my Nixon watch. It costs around $100.
You spent $100 on that.

$100 dollars is nothing for a watch.
My TW Steel is reasonably priced and it was $400 dollars.

A watch isn't just something to tell time. It's a statement. You can tell alot about a person by his watch. You might think it's stupid since you don't fully appreciate clothing and style, but I do.
You can say the same thing about anything expensive, so, whatever.
Also, U-Boat Flightdeck's are $3,000 dollars, and people still buy them. Fuck, if I have enough to spare I'd probably get one. You know why? Because they're fucking gorgeous.

They look really fucking classy. I prefer digital as well, but I've yet to see a classy looking digital watch.

Are you a watch salesman? Because you sound like one. And if you judge someone by their watch then you're very shallow and materialistic.

Okay so I don't appreciate overly expensive tools that do nothing but tell everyone "look at me im rich"
If you had three thousand dollars you would spend it on a watch that serves the exact same purpose as your already 400 dollar watch? That is kind of stupid. You could buy three ipads or an awesome gaming PC and both of them have a clock plus TONS of other features.
I do not own a watch, I carry around my 300 dollar Ipod so I can play games, listen to music, look at the time if I have to, and utilize hundreds of apps that I can download that would serve thousands of different situations. Yet your 400 dollar watch tells you the time and... looks good. My Ipod also looks good with this case I got, plus if someone steals it they can't even use it since I have a 8 character password while if someone somehow steals your watch, you are fucked.

Watches are basically the only thing a man can proudly wear as jewelry, one could get a watch for the time, or one could get one as an accessory. It's like asking why a woman would spend so much money on a pair of shoes, well the same thing goes for a man and his watch.

Both are a stupid thing to spend thousands of dollars on.
$100 dollars is nothing for a watch.
100 dollars isn't much for a watch, but it is for a gimmicky one like that. with a simple non-replacable rubber band.
also jdenton a watch is an investment thats supposed to last you your whole life. thousands of dollars may be a bit steep but they are worth a few hundred for decades of service, and probably decades after that if you pass it on trough your family.
I take it JC is most probably chub-fat neck beard.
A nice, analog watch not only tells the time, but it is also the pinnacle of engineering.
Womens shoes? Fuck womens shoes..
Not only does dressing well and being well presented get you classy bitches, it also just makes you feel good about yourself. If I'm out in public and I take that extra step to dress well, I feel great, it raises my spirits and I just have a much nicer day.
For example in a job interview, the interviewers look at how the person presents themselves, neat clothing with a nice classy watch speaks a lot about the person. If the same guy walked in a singlet, shorts and flip-flops it leaves a bad taste in the mouths of the interviewers.
When I met my girlfriends parents not to long ago I made sure I was very presentable. I put on neat clothing, shaved properly, did my hair slightly, and wore my watch.
The day after my girlfriend told me her parents were impressed and they even mentioned I dressed well, the dad himself remarked upon my watch. The next time I saw her parents, my girlfriends dad and I spoke for hours on end... The conversation starter? My simple $350 watch.

expensive watch=higher status
people will reconise and judge you on the rolex you're wearing.
it should last you and future generations for decades and decades to come.
they are functional, i'm uncomfortable without the time and date within reach.
as i said, maby not thousands, but hundreds at least.
whats not to get?

It still does not serve any more purpose than my ipod
So if someone sees me and thinks "He is not wearing a Rolex, what a petty urchin!" I should feel bad and purchase an expensive watch just to impress a few select people that would also think the same thing when they see me walking down the street?
I guess if you get one of the hundred+ dollar watches it could last you a while
It takes just a few seconds to pull out your phone/ipod and check the time.
Also pointing out the hypocrisy real quick of dirtydirtypanda's post, saying "fuck womens shoes"
If you all have a hardon for watches so much, I would think you could understand a woman's point of view on expensive and nice looking shoes which is the same principle of "it looks nice and is expensive so I look nice and rich"

yes, you get what you pay for considering watches though when you enter the thousands there is a point when it's all just prestige.

taking out a phone is generally considered impolite and makes you look indifferent, something you generally don't want, unless one is still in the stage of "coolest kids in class don't care". a phone cannot get close the the quick twist of your wrist and being able to see the time, believe me a few hundred dollar watch is more reliable than the clock on your iphone. and will last you longer. can you go swim with your iphone? nope it will short out, can you go skate with your iphone? nope, it will fall and break. the list goes on.

quite. though there are women that really take it too far, like there are men who do that with watches.

I did not notice I did kinda change that argument and I apologize but you can't really use that argument since not everyone is going to judge you on something like that anyway, its mostly opinion.
I don't see how taking out your phone is any more impolite than looking at your watch, and your second example is silly since that means you have spent 100 dollars on a device that lets you see the time 2 seconds quicker. And can you honestly tell me it is so vitally important to tell what time it is when underwater that you need to spend a hundred dollars just to do it? And I don't see much point in the skating thing since once again is it so vitally important that you need to know the time when you are in the middle of a skating trick because otherwise its not hard to pull out a phone real quick and check the time while you are just riding around.
Overall most of this is opinion, I find that spending a lot of money on something like a watch is silly while most of you don't have a problem with it, its really not a big deal and I like to think both of us are right in some aspects while others are debatable but its 6:01 AM and I'm not arguing over jewelry anymore
hypocrisy of what I said?
By "fuck womens shoes" I mean they don't come close to the complexity of a nice watch yet they can easily cost as much as one.

Cool simple watches? Check out Nava. They look rather cool, and have a subtle quirky style to them.

you spend a few hundred dollars on a device that lets you see the time 2 seconds quicker every time you want to know the time, tens of thousands of times in your life.

i was just giving examples there are so much different things, if you look at them all individually they might seem trivial but taking all of them in account overshades the sum you'd have to pay for it. lets face it, and iphone breaks, and it does quick. if you're going skating or riding a bike or something and you fall theres a good change your iphone can go back to apple to be fixed, if you're lucky withing the warranty period.
the thing is you can keep your watch on at all times. if you're going to swim you'll have to leave your phone behind, imagine you're just taking a dip in some pool and theres no lockers. your phone could get stolen. i could list a lot of everyday situations that a watch is more usefull than a phone.
And yes, taking out your phone is impolite, because you avert your eyes completely from someone you might be talking with, and they don't know you simply want to know the time, they'll probably think your latest whatsapp conversation is more interesting than yours.
besides, phones get stolen, watches don't. if you're walking trought. you can always conceal your watch if you feel insecure.

That a watch wouldn't get stolen because you're wearing it all the time but a phone does is not a pro about wearing a watch. Who goes without a phone nowadays anyways? With a phone you stay in contact, stay in touch, with a watch you don't.
In what other situation is your watch more useful than your phone other than telling you the time?
Why would taking your phone out not be polite? Are you that socially awkward you can't ask what time it is in a conversation and if no one knows then flip out your phone to check it?
'But a watch gives you status!', you know what gives you more status? Standing tall and secure, showing you are relaxed, do no harm yet not someone to be messed with. Your own mentality is what counts more than just a gadget.
By your logic we should avoid driving cars as well, because driving with your car to that pool party, where all the cool kids swim with their watches on, that is 30kms distant could get your car stolen when you leave it in the parking lot.

Those are ridiculous arguments.
First, iphones aren't that fragile. I have dropped mine so many times, in my room on soft floor, outside on bricks, in the bathroom etc. It still works fine besides a few scratches. I am sure even those scratches could be eliminated if it had some kind of case.
Everytime I got into a pool, there was a giant clock hanging there somewhere on the wall. And luckily every pool I've been to actually had lockers because where else can you store your clothes.
Looking at your phone for the time can be as impolite as looking at your watch for the time. If someone talks to you and you take a look at your watch, it may very well look like you're bored already.
Phones can get stolen and so can watches if they look expensive. You say 'you can conceal your watch' and you forget that a phone is always in your pocket, also concealed.
I would wear a watch only if I did not have a phone or if it'd just look good. But lucky me, I have got a phone and good looking watches tend to be very expensive. And before you say 'but if you can buy an expensive iphone, you can surely also buy an expensive watch', no because that'd be comparing a phone with a watch and you can figure out yourself what the differences are between those two
I think another point to add is that there are watch enthusiasts. People who love watches for their design and craftsmanship. There are whole forums dedicated to watches and the mechanical movements inside them.
For the same reason that some people wouldn't spend more than 10 grand on a car, some people just don't care about the watch they wear. Others do.
