Anyone who uses a phone for a watch is pathetic.
Anyone who uses a phone for a watch is pathetic.
and why is this
I won't argue with someone who can't even capitalize letters or even use punctuation.
and how is that relevant [editline]13th February 2011[/editline] sounds to me like 'I don't have an argument'
I'll give you a few arguments: First off, it's less time consuming to hold up your wrist to see the time rather than reaching into your pocket to grab a phone to check the time. Not to mention someone could easily snatch the phone from your hand if you're not being careful. Or you could drop it, potentially damaging the phone to the point where you need a new one. If you're in a city, it could get trampled on, fall in the street, etc. With a watch, it's on your wrist, so it's less likely to be stolen, plus your watch won't slide off your wrist and fall on the ground, ruining the watch. Not to mention there are clocks all over the place and that people don't bother looking for them, so they take the lazy way and check their phone. If you're like me, who has to carry two very expensive instruments to various places, it's best to have a watch so you don't have to stop, put the cases down and pull out your phone. Instead, you could either look for a clock or simply lift your wrist up to check the time. Overall, there are many better ways to checking the time than checking your phone. Plus, I believe that those students who check the time on their phones in class are the pathetic ones, I didn't mean it like everyone overall. I'm sorry, I should have rephrased that. Also, sorry for making a comment on the way you type. It was immature of me and I'll be sure to avoid similar comments in the future.
Anyone who uses a phone for a watch is pathetic.
Yeah, I agree -- a watch is a great status symbol, must be no expensive watch, just make sure its analogue and housed in stainless steel, simply business style.
Those are ridiculous arguments. First, iphones aren't that fragile. I have dropped mine so many times, in my room on soft floor, outside on bricks, in the bathroom etc. It still works fine besides a few scratches. I am sure even those scratches could be eliminated if it had some kind of case. Everytime I got into a pool, there was a giant clock hanging there somewhere on the wall. And luckily every pool I've been to actually had lockers because where else can you store your clothes. Looking at your phone for the time can be as impolite as looking at your watch for the time. If someone talks to you and you take a look at your watch, it may very well look like you're bored already. Phones can get stolen and so can watches if they look expensive. You say 'you can conceal your watch' and you forget that a phone is always in your pocket, also concealed.
lets face it, iphones break a lot, it's ridiculous to claim otherwise, these things break, a lot, that yours didn't after dropping it very few times says nothing, here are the facts: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9178402/More_than_a_quarter_of_iPhones_break_within_2_years http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/law_librarian_blog/2010/06/iphone-failure-rate-26-within-2-years-35-to-40-within-3-years.html almost half of them break within 4 years. i can assure the rate of decent watch breaking is below 1% in the first 3 years. a good watch commonly has sapphire glass, a material that is perfectly translucent as well as very scratch resistent. more than a quarter break within a year, thats outragious. the iphone 4 only made this worse. the screen is harder and therefore more brittle. if you're looking at your phone no one is assuming you're looking at the time, because thats what watches are for. for example, in a school, most schools prohibit the use of mobile phones in class because it distracts people from their work, but none will prohibit the use of watches because they are functional and don't take your mind off your work. once again you're just taking examples out of context again, i was talking non commercial pools, but besides it's the combination of pros, that make a watch better, i was just taking a situation that requires you to put your phone down. this applies for example, at a gym too. the gym i go to doesn't have lockers, and a lot of others don't either. i'm not saying a phone isn't concealed, i'm saying a watch can be concealed if you wish so, it was on subject of robbery, and shouldn't be taken out of context. iphones are probably the one thing that get stolen the most. an iphone is nowhere near as realiable as a good watch, it has short battery life, it loses time faster, the complicated mechanics are nowhere near as well engineered as a good watch and tend to fail, as noted above.
I would wear a watch only if I did not have a phone or if it'd just look good. But lucky me, I have got a phone and good looking watches tend to be very expensive. And before you say 'but if you can buy an expensive iphone, you can surely also buy an expensive watch', no because that'd be comparing a phone with a watch and you can figure out yourself what the differences are between those two
you can't compare a phone to a watch indeed, a watch is for being able to know the time conveniently, keep track of time, and sometimes alarm, and a phone isn't because it's not a decent watch.a good watch tends to be expensive because it's supposed to last you longer than the few years an iphone does, if you haven't bought the new version apple releases every half month. i won't lose my watch because it's strapped to my wrist my watch won't be snagged because it's strapped to my wrist my watch enables me to see the time in a clockless space witouth completely averting my thoughts. my watch is allowed in every space, schools, cinemas etc. my watch won't run out of batteries within a few years my watch is accurate to less than a second. i think these points prove the superiority of watches over using your mobile phone as compromise. and also why a watch is useful without even using the argument of fashion.

Who cares if your phone breaks? In the end we all use/need a phone for our appointments and calls. So even though it will break or gets damaged you'll still buy that phone for your needs. The fact that you're watch won't be snatched as easy as your phone doesn't mean that this is a pro of the watch, it just means people are still assholes and steal your stuff. Why so much of a fuss about gadgets anyways? Just post some good looking watches and stop derailing.
i have the purple style but in bright orange
Looks great and is pure mechanical. Only downside is it might be a tad large for someone with small wrists. [img]http://www.sunglassesclub.com/watches/images/SNZG05K1_bk.jpg[/img]
Wow I can't believe people on facepunch are arguing over something subjective.
Anyone who buys a watch that costs more than a phone or ipod is an idiot.
A good mechanical watch will last for generations, while a phone will last for a few years. There's a reason watches from 200 years ago still exist and fully work; watches are very high quality, durable, convenient, and a huge status symbol of wealth, intelligence, and power.
The report shows us that like 18% out of the claimed 26% is due to accidents, so also dumb people dropping their iphones from too high spots onto hard surfaces. You can hardly blame anyone for this but yourself. If I take my phone out of my pocket, press one button and put it back in my pocket, and this all happens within a few seconds, everyone will understand that I was looking at the time, mainly because there's is nothing you can do in one second expect look at your phone. Even schools won't punish you for it Your gym doesn't have lockers? That's one shitty gym. Needless to say, there are clocks in any gym. If you're getting robbed, surely a robber would ask you to empty your pocket first and might not notice your watch. But what's your point? That we shouldn't carry phones? By the same logic we should also not carry our wallets because every mugger will be the most interested in your wallet. There's a great reason why watches have a longer battery life than iphones. That's because iphones are.. uhh.. phones? They are used for calling, mailing, internet, texting, music, TIME etc. If you have all of this in one device, why would you buy a seperate device that will show you the time.
you can't compare a phone to a watch indeed, a watch is for being able to know the time conveniently, keep track of time, and sometimes alarm, and a phone isn't because it's not a decent watch.a good watch tends to be expensive because it's supposed to last you longer than the few years an iphone does, if you haven't bought the new version apple releases every half month. i won't lose my watch because it's strapped to my wrist my watch won't be snagged because it's strapped to my wrist my watch enables me to see the time in a clockless space witouth completely averting my thoughts. my watch is allowed in every space, schools, cinemas etc. my watch won't run out of batteries within a few years my watch is accurate to less than a second. i think these points prove the superiority of watches over using your mobile phone as compromise. and also why a watch is useful without even using the argument of fashion.
I won't lose my phone because it's in my pocket My phone won't be snagged because I don't live in a ghetto where people take phones out of people's hands. My phone enables me to see the time in a clockless space too without completely averting my thoughts. My phone may not be allowed in every space, but since absolutely no one gives a shit if you only look at the time, it doesn't matter. My phone will need to be recharged more often because it provides me more than just time. My phone may be wrong by 3 seconds and I do not understand why anyone would give a single shit about this. What you are doing is that you think of a phone as only a method of seeing the time. You completely disregard other features of a phone.
Half of the thread posts aren't simple watches.

Watches are a great status symbol and look good, how hard can that be to get?

My watch is silver with blue face and analog. I personally like the slinky wristbands since I have a small wrist.
you know why? because they break really fast after falling, a watch will not.
You are not supposed to drop phones. They don't break really fast.
that, or you're checking for texts because the people you're talking to aren't interesting apperently. schools really punish for it, depends on what school.
You can't check your texts in a literal one or two second(s).
What happened to it? I wore a pocket watch for a couple months as a teenager until I realized I looked like a dickhead. Not saying anyone does currently; I couldn't pull it off.
Well I used it for school, you weren't allowed to use a mobile phone as clock. This was in the time everyone had those flip phones, the exact same motion was used to open the pocket watch, so teachers always went "hey! I saw that, hand in your phone!", and then they'd see it was a pocket watch :smug: . Anyway I had it lying on a table and someone bumped into it, it fell on the ground into a million pieces, my point was already made so I bought a wrist watch v:v:v. I loved the way you could see in the back at all the gears and shit, still looking for a wrist watch that has that too, but they're very hard to find here.

Hey guys. No one cares.
I have this It's pretty much the only digital watch I could find that doesn't look like a bloated piece of shit with buttons all over the place
Watch is better because it's more of a subtle style accessory than a phone is.
