Yeah, but if your games can't run at 144fps, then that 144hz monitor is just an expensive 60hz monitor.
I'd love to have 24fps with realistic exposure/shutter speeds to ACTUALLY give a responsive, cinematic feel. If done right it could be really cool. Other than that I just want at least 60
I can tolerate low framerate, but more is always better. I know others feel differently but for me even an unconventional framerate like 45 is better than 30.

It might look alright visually, like if you are watching someone else play, but the controls would feel really shitty and unresponsive at 24fps.
Having a 144Hz monitor, I'm never going back.
Is it necessary? Hell no. But I'm one of those people that plays FPS games and likes to set my mouse sensitivity to nausea inducing levels and spin around a lot. Everything just feels silky smooth in a way that it simply doesn't at 60. I can tell the difference between 60 and 120+ on most games very quickly, almost instantly for some titles. The difference between 30 and 60 is ludicrous enough as it is. The difference between 30 and 120+ is simply astounding. I cannot fathom playing FPS games at 30 fps anymore. Everything just feels choppy.
The added 3D support was just gravy on the top. Playing witcher 2 with native 3D support was about as immersed as I have ever been in a game.
He's also 100% correct about the desktop environment as well. When I first got my 144 Hz monitor I legitimately spent 20+ minutes just moving a folder window around my screen at high speeds, and I'm not the only one.
Sometimes, when my GPU driver updates, it resets back to 60Hz, which always shows me how fucking awesome 144 Hz is. 60 Hz on the desktop feels extremely sluggish and choppy, and almost impossible to use. Once you go 144 Hz, you never go back.
Also, moving the mouse around really fast produces twice the amount of cursors!
My eyes have gotten so used to 144hz on my monitor, when I use another computer with a standard 60hz monitor it feels as if it's "lagging". And I can no longer play games on the Xbox 360 without feeling sick (literally makes me nauseous) how low the frame rate is.
i'm not going to buy a 120hz monitor until someone makes a good colour accurate one that doesn't cost >£1000 (if they even exist at all)

I for one prefer styles in games specifically because I hate the 'cinematic feel'. I don't really like watching it, and I can't stand playing it.
I swear I read this exact post a few months ago
I've said the same thing in the past, as have several others. Wouldn't surprise me if I, or someone else, had written something similar a few months ago. The viewpoint is just as relevant now as it was several years ago.
Yeah, but if your games can't run at 144fps, then that 144hz monitor is just an expensive 60hz monitor.
it doesn't have to be locked at 60 though
there are 80 numbers between 60 and 144, pick the one that's best
and you can still run older games at a higher frame rate
The thing about gun rates of fire being tied to framerate is also true in Call of Duty games.
I remember in cod2 the higher FPS you had, the further you could jump for some reason...
I already overclocked my monitor from 60hz to around 85hz, i saw a neat difference just with that. But then there was artifact so i turned it back to default.
I don't think it's worth the extra computing power I'd need to play games at 120/144FPS.
It isn't, but I still can and eventually will.

Do you happen to work for Ubisoft?
People are trying to make film 120 FPS and game companies are trying to make games 30 FPS.
Am i the only sane person here!?
High refresh rates are great for twitch shooters, racing games (fuck nfs:rivials) and desktop use.
Other than that, until they decide to unlock the framerate or double it to 120fps, its not gonna make any difference in other genres.
Makes an absolutely huge difference in fighting and action games.
Yeah, but if your games can't run at 144fps, then that 144hz monitor is just an expensive 60hz monitor.
Just because you're not hitting 144hz, doesn't mean you're playing at 60fps.
Just because you're not hitting 144hz, doesn't mean you're playing at 60fps.
But is the price worth it if you're not hitting full 144?
Makes an absolutely huge difference in fighting and action games.
He kind of addressed that in this video how fighting games are capped because of mechanics.
But is the price worth it if you're not hitting full 144?
Well like I said before, if you're considering a 144hz monitor, you're probably not someone with a bad computer, so at some level you will have games that will run at that refresh rate and framerate.
If in your life you only play one game ever, and you can't get over 60fps or something, and you will never upgrade your computer or play another game ever, then sure, it's not worth it.
Do you happen to work for Ubisoft?
I'm not advocating for anything that exists today, I am merely saying I wish there was a way to get the aesthetic of of 24fps cinema working in games, but it would never really work. Ubisoft is literally saying that the lower frammates make the game more cinema like, but with an actual camera it captures and blurs all the movement between those frames
I can't stand under 48fps in games with a mouse and under 30 with a controller
Are there many games where the physics tick rate is independent of the graphics framerate?
Afaik a lot of games get away with different framerates by just having a variable dT for each frame, while the frame rate IS the physics tick rate.
In other cases physics and render run in separate threads and so can work at a different speed.

To be honest I've had to run a few games at less than the 144hz refresh rate that my main monitor has and even at 30 or 60fps, they look just as smooth, only downside is you can see the visual input differences because of it and delays feel a little longer but its barely noticable until it drops drastically, blame MMOs for that though. :v:
Point I'm making is even at lower stable fps its still visually smoother thanks to the refresh rate.
Personally, I'd rather get a 4K monitor than one capable of >120Hz (okay, the price difference is pretty big, but this is pretty much a choice you have to make) - I don't play many shooters, and I don't think the higher frame rate would do much for me. I mostly play Total War games, so yeah. The extra work space would be nice as well.
I wonder how much it would cost to buy a 120hz 4k monitor and a computer that can run the newest of new games with it.
probably a lot
if you mostly play total war you should be fine though

Nfs rivals is a great game, to a lot of people, if you don't particulary like it, don't shame it, because you know, It was made as a pure racing game, not some shitty customization game that you get to just pimp out a stupid car.

It's probably more of a bandwidth issue, I don't think DP 1.2a can handle that kind of bitrate, though 1.3 should considering it can run two 4K displays at 60Hz. There might be a difference bandwidth-wise that I don't know about, though.

Hah ok because its locked to 30fps and holds your hand all the way through it makes it a great game.
Sorry but Hot Pursuit was where it ended with the new games, at least that wasn't capped and had its logic tied to the framerate.
I get over 1000fps in the dark room in garrys mod, get on my level scrubs
But is the price worth it if you're not hitting full 144?
then don't go 144?
just go 120, or 100, or whatever number you average your FPS in
never never buy a gtx 700 series if all you play is gmod and casual indie titles. Never settle way above what you actually need.
you don't need military grade kevlar boots with super steel toes just for a hiking trip after all.
The last people to buy stuff like a high hz monitors are the ones who don't hit that hz anyways, nor do they buy 'gamer keyboards' etc if they aren't dedicated gamers

I don't even get that much on my desktop
probably
