I think a game can survive based on atmosphere alone, and in that respect SOMA looks fucking great. I want to see more shit like that robot etc. But as a horror experience/atmosphere? I'm not really impressed.
But the game has to have some kind of threat. I understand that running from a monster gets boring, but you don't want another AMFP. I like how they describe SOMA in this quote:
With Amnesia doing this sort of thing was fairly simple as the core ingredient was the player running and hiding from monsters. In SOMA it is much more complex. While the game also has its share of monsters, hiding and stuff like that, it is not what makes the game special.
Also, for those that are afraid how the monsters will turn out:
There are some SCP inspiration in SOMA for sure, but it is a lot more subtle and has to do with how we think about monsters and artifacts. They play a larger role now, the foreboding is much deeper and there is a bigger connection with them and the central themes in the game. Actually, a lot of the SOMA's themes are directly expressed through interactions with enemies, an idea that stems from SCP.
http://frictionalgames.blogspot.se/2013/10/soma-officially-revealed.html
Doesn't look very scary, but I like the creepy feel to the whole robot identity crisis stuff.
I really hope they don't pull the cheesy "you were robot all along" thing
Is it just me or did the players vision look like a camera (static at some parts)
I really hope there's more enemies. looking forward to this.
I really hope there's more enemies. looking forward to this.
There WILL be at least 2 different enemies.

It could totally done and be done great. I'm not talking Containment Breach. SCP's too cool. I'm really happy that this game has some inspiration from it. I'm gonna buy this shit so hard.
Something tells me the games going to get really creepy the further you play into it though, if its got a compelling story to it ( seems it does ) then it'll definitely drag in that creep factor as you discover more.
Was it just me, or the exposition about the [sp]robot thinking it's human[/sp] was way too "in your face". I mean the first time it was implied it was the first thought that came to mind. Having to repeat it like 2 more times makes it lose its charm IMO
Spoiler- You are also a robot. You heard it here first ;)

I kind of like it. Creates a weird mish-mash of empathy and fear how something that acts so humanized could be a potential enemy. Plus, I'm guessing that was [sp]a "fresh" robot, considering you find their body just a few minutes later. It seems according to the short films that it takes them a while for them to grasp their own self awareness.[/sp]
Are you talking about the short films?
No, no. I'm talking about the middle of the gameplay video, when you [sp]talk to "Carl". It's almost as going "HEY HEY YES LOOK AT ME I'M IN FACT, A ROBOT THAT BELIEVES IT'S HUMAN, LOOK AT ME, BOOO, SCAAAARY". Yes, I fucking got that the first time it was implied, thank you, now shut the fuck up. It removes some of the creepiness. Finding Carl's real body also affects the scary factor, because now you have concrete proof that Carl is in fact dead and the robot is just impersonating him (or he is inside the robot). I mean, the first female robot was creepy as shit and all that atmosphere was ruined by so much exposition with Carl. I also wish they hadn't revealed so much about this robot/human plot in the shorts and other videos. Yes, I know, I'm to blame for watching them but then again, they could have avoided it.[/sp]

Carl was a little bit in your face though, hopefully the game won't repeat the whole "I'm definitely not a robot" thing too much though. It could go stale really fast.

I'm a human alright! Look!" If some fucker came up to you while you were bleeding out and ignored your pleas for help and instead kept questioning your humanity you'd probably get up in his face too wouldn't you??
Thoughts on it below. While I do like the premise of it, I still like how the more recent Aliens game did, giving you 1 instantly lethal enemy that you initially avoided, but then found ways to deal with, while also having a couple other threats that you CAN take out as well. That just seems more interested than "Avoid monster at all costs." I mean there could be a lot more to this than they're showing, but I'm not that impressed. "Avoid the monster" games just seem incredibly boring to me, really. It's hard to get scared of something that kills you in 1 hit you can just retry indefinitely till you find the solution. This is entirely speculation though, and they could just flat out prove me wrong on it entirely. Which I wouldn't mind, of course. [sp]There's actually another trailer over on http://frictionalgames.blogspot.se/2013/10/soma-officially-revealed.html that tells a good deal more about what's going on, or at least explains more about the humanized robots. Not making it a link because spoilers. I think it's all gonna be about the implications of allowing humans to take control of machines. And what happens when you attempt to fuse them into something alive. Kinda like HAL, but with a dash of mind transfers. Carl is more than likely a brain hooked up to a robot. There's likely a machine that's keeping him alive, and when you cut the power, you also cut life support. I have 0 idea what's up with all the weird fungal growth light things. Probably massive plot element.[/sp]
